Philippine senator urges DOJ, PNP to probe alleged online

MANILA, PHILIPPINES
The chairman of the Senate basic education committee has sounded the alarm on students who are allegedly selling sensual photos and videos to raise funds so they could buy gadgets for distance learning.
In a statement on Sunday, January 3, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian called on the Department of Justice and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Cybercrime Group to step up their efforts to track down those who exploit vulnerable youth.
Gatchalian issued the call after learning of an alleged online "Christmas sale" of their sensual photos and videos to buy gadgets for their siblings and pay for internet bills in support of their distance learning.
"Nakakabahalang dahil sa mga suliraning dinudulot ng pandemya, ang ating mga kabataan ay nahaharap sa matinding panganib na maging biktima ng pang-aabuso at karahasan. Pinagsasamantalahan ng mga masasamang-loob ang pangangailangan ng ating mga mag-aaral at dapat itong labanan ng ating pamahalaan," Gatchalian said.
(It's alarming that due to the pandemic, our students are in grave danger of becoming victims of abuse and violence. Evil elements are taking exploiting the needs of our students and the government should fight them.)
Citing a report on The Philippine Online Student Tambayan (POST), a news portal on the student sector, the supposed Christmas bundle, which contains photos and videos that sometimes reveal the face of sellers, is sold for as low P150 (About $3 USD).
Huge increase in child sex exploitation
Gatchalian's office said that during the pandemic, there has been a 264% increase in online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC) cases recorded in Metro Manila, or 279,166 cases in 2020 compared to 76,561 cases in 2019.
Schools in the country have shifted to distance learning – a mix of online learning and printed modules – following President Rodrigo Duterte's directive to suspend face-to-face classes until a COVID-19 vaccine becomes locally available.
The decision to open classes in the middle of a pandemic was met with criticism. Students and parents pointed out that their household finances have been affected by months of lockdown, and they could not afford to buy the tools needed for the revamped education system.
Predator has no concept of how he has hurt his victim
That's called narcissim

A remorseless 'predator' sexually assaulted a teenage girl after plying her with alcohol.
On one occasion, she was forced to drink so much alcohol that she woke up unable to recall what had happened to her.
At Bolton Crown Court today (Tuesday), Swistak was jailed for 13 years.
Prosecutor Julian Goode told the court Swistak 'groomed' the girl before encouraging her to perform sexual acts. As the abuse escalated, he sexually assaulted his victim and recorded her on his phone.
Swistak threatened the girl and told her that if she revealed the abuse, 'no one would believe her'.

The court heard Swistak would often summon the victim via text, leaving her 'haunted' by the sound of alerts on her phone.
In a statement, the victim said the abuse has left her suffering with low confidence and self-esteem.
She also experiences mood swings and a loss of appetite. The victim said she could 'never forget' what Swistak did to her.
Swistak, who has no previous convictions, was found guilty of a number of charges by a jury at a trial in October last year.
They included causing a child to engage in sexual activity; two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child under 16; engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a child under 16; two counts of making indecent photographs of a child; four counts of sexual assault of a child under 16; and sexual assault by penetration of a child under 16.
Keith Harrison, mitigating, described Swistak, from north Manchester, as being of 'hitherto good character'. He said the defendant's health had deteriorated in custody.
Aw, shucks! What about the child's health? His only concern is for himself. That's narcissism!
"He complains that he has not had sufficient treatment in respect of that," added Mr Harrison. "His symptoms have not been properly researched and he feels he is suffering physically. He has not been receiving his medication and that is having an effect upon him, making his life more difficult in custody."
Sentencing Swistak, Judge Martin Walsh described his behaviour as 'predatory'.
"You have shown no remorse or acknowledgement of the gravity of your offending and the devastating impact it has had upon the victim," he added.
Judge Walsh imposed a restraining order, banning Swistak from contacting his victim, and made him the subject of a sexual harm prevention order. He will also be forced to sign the sex offender register for life.
