Chennai: A woman was arrested under Posco (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) for marrying her 17-year-old student at Perambalur district of Tamil Nadu.

The Perambalur police arrested the woman from her residence on Monday night.

According to the prosecution, the woman as part of her teacher training course had gone to to a Government High School at Vickramangalam two years ago where she fell in love with a 15-year-old student.

Even after she went back, the duo continued their relationship and on October 22, 2021, they got married at Gangaikondacholapuram without their parents knowledge.

The boy later took his new bride to his grandmother’s home at Moongilapadi which was lying vacant. Though the house was closed, the boy knew where his grandmother hid the keys and entered the home and spent time there.

When the boy failed to return home by sunset, his mother called him up on his phone. The boy confided in his mother that he was in love with a woman and had taken her to his grandmother’s place.

At this, the she reprimanded him and told him that his family will not allow them to live together.

Perturbed by the conversation, the duo decided to end their lives and consumed poison. However, the boy showed presence of mind and rode to a PHC at Kunnam in a two-wheeler with the woman. Following a fortnight’s treatment, they recovered and went back to their respective homes.

After the boy reached home, his father filed a police complaint against the woman for luring his underaged son and marrying him while he had not attained the marriageable age.

The woman was arrested and a Posco court in Chennai remanded her in judicial custody.

Women ‘auctioned’ online in India through ‘lewd’ photos

Photographs of hundreds of Indian Muslim women were shared on an app that reportedly auctioned the women online. The images, which were sourced from their social media accounts and apparently doctored, have sparked an uproar.

The issue came to light after anonymous Twitter users shared details about the app, called ‘Bulli Bai’, with links to its page on software development platform GitHub. On Saturday, several women tweeted about their names and likenesses being shared on the app.

The Delhi Police registered a sexual harassment complaint against the unknown perpetrators after a journalist reported that she had been targeted by the app, which has since been taken down by GitHub. India’s information technology minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, tweeted that the Computer Emergency Response Team – a cybersecurity agency under the IT Ministry – is also investigating the matter.

Noting that the new year had started with a “sense of fear & disgust,” the journalist, Ismat Ara, shared a screenshot of the app that listed her as the “Bulli Bai of the day” on Twitter. In her complaint, Ara noted that the portal “had a doctored picture of me in an improper, unacceptable and clearly lewd context.” She also said the term ‘Bulli’ is a derogatory reference to Muslim women.

Several other prominent Muslim women also tweeted about being ‘auctioned off’ on the site, with popular radio personality Sayema noting that the incident was a “reflection on India’s broken justice system, a dilapidated law and order arrangement” and wondering whether it was “becoming the most unsafe country for women.”

Sayema, India has long been one of the least safe countries for women, if not the least safe country. Under Modi, an element of anti-Islam has added to the already grossly misogynistic attitude.

Social media users pointed to the similarities between Bulli Bai and a defunct website called ‘Sulli Deals’, which had also put up photographs of Indian Muslim women and listed them ‘for sale’ last year. That app, also hosted on GitHub, had triggered similar outrage and promises of action.

A number of opposition politicians have weighed in on the issue, criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and police forces for allowing “such rampant misogyny and communal targeting of women” to go unchecked.

“The humiliation and communal hatred towards women will stop only when we all stand against it in one voice. The year has changed – now we have to speak up!” Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said.

37 paedophiles who walked free from Liverpool's courts in 2021

Of course, we know that paedophiles are so good at following strict rules

This is a list of 37 paedophiles prosecuted at our region's courts this year who escaped an immediate prison sentence.

Every year Liverpool's courts see cases involving awful abuse of children.

Sadly, 2021 was no different, with dozens of sickening cases of child sexual abuse brought before judges.

Yet while many offenders are sent to prison, others are allowed to leave the courts with only suspended sentences.

The vast majority of these cases involve possession or sending sexual messages to children, offences which are often dealt with by suspended prison terms with strict conditions.

Here are 37 men whose cases the ECHO covered who avoided an immediate prison sentence.

Please go to the Liverpool Echo for the list.
