On 20th June, the Orissa High Court commuted the death sentence of Sheikh Asif Ali to life imprisonment from death sentence. Asif is convicted of rape and murder of a six-year-old girl. The court noted in the judgment that Asif was consistently offering Namaz several times a day and he was ready to accept the punishment as “he has surrendered before God”. The court took his readiness to accept his punishment as a sign of remorse and potential to reform.

The Bench comprising of Justice SK Sahoo and Justice RK Pattnaik stated, “The punishment should not be disproportionately great is a corollary and it is dictated by the same principle that does not allow punishment of the innocent, for any punishment over what is deserved for the criminal conduct is punishment without guilt. There is no cogent evidence that the appellant is beyond reform and rehabilitation,” while commuting the death sentence to life imprisonment.

The incident

On 21st August 2014, the young victim and her minor cousin went to buy chocolates at around 2 PM. By 3 PM the girl did not return which worried her family. They called the villagers and initiated a search for her. The 6-year-old was found naked and unconscious in a narrow part of Sheikh Khairuddin’s house. She was rushed to a primary health care centre from where she was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. While she was being taken to the hospital, the victim succumbed to her injuries.

The victim’s cousin disclosed later that Sheikh Asif Ali and Sheikh Akil Ali had forcibly taken her away. A complaint in the matter was filed by the victim’s family leading to a case being registered against the accused under Sections 302, 376-D, and 376-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

During the investigation and based on the postmortem report of the deceased, it was found that the accused in the case gagged the mouth of the deceased and lifted her in arms to take her away. They raped the 6-year-old child and then strangulated her to death….

And what possible good can these monsters do to make up for raping and murdering a 6 year old?  Where is her justice?

Oklahoma public schools will be required to teach students the Bible as a “necessary historical document” — a week after Louisiana directed the Ten Commandments be posted in every classroom.

State Superintendent Ryan Walters revealed the controversial edict, which critics argue is unconstitutional and could end up being fought in court.

“It is essential that our kids have an understanding of the Bible and its historical context,” the Republican told reporters.

The Bible, he added, is “a necessary historical document to teach our kids about the history of this country, to have a complete understanding of Western civilization, to have an understanding of the basis of our legal system.”

The Bible lessons will be taught in grades five through 12.

Walter’s directive quickly earned condemnation.

“Public schools are not Sunday schools,” Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said in a statement.

“This is textbook Christian Nationalism: Walters is abusing the power of his public office to impose his religious beliefs on everyone else’s children. Not on our watch.”

While Oklahoma law already allows Bibles in the classroom and teachers to use them in instruction, according to the state attorney general’s office, it’s unclear if Walters has the power to force schools to teach the religious book.

Individual school districts have the exclusive authority to determine instruction, curriculum and textbooks, per state law.

The decision in Oklahoma comes after Louisiana enacted a first-in-the-nation law that mandates the Ten Commandments be put up in every classroom.

That move was later emphatically endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

A migrant from Turkey was charged with raping a 15-year-old girl in Albany — and questions are swirling about why it took cops more than a month to inform the public about the horrific assault.

Sakir Akkan, 21, is accused of attacking the teen inside his car on Arch Street in the state capital in the early hours of May 14 after she ran away from a local group home, according to the Albany Times-Union and court records obtained by The Post.

Akkan — who wasn’t arrested until last week — allegedly told the girl, who was in the passenger seat of his Toyota Prius, that he’d pummel her if she didn’t get into the back, and threatened her with a metal pole, according to the filing.   

Once she was inside the backseat, he allegedly took the girl’s clothes off and raped her, the filing charges.

The victim lived in a group home close to where the attack unfolded, according to the Times-Union. She suffered scratches on her legs from trying to resist the attack, according to court docs.

The teen was cut loose soon after and fled to a nearby residence for help, a police report obtained by The Albany Times-Union shows.

The suspect was finally nabbed June 18 and slapped with a first-degree rape charge, Albany cops confirmed.

Akkan was back in court on Thursday, sporting a pompadour-style hairdo with buzzed sides, with an orange Albany County Correctional Facility jumpsuit and shackles.

Through a Turkish translator, Akkan agreed to waive preliminary hearings and grand jury proceedings.

He was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail, a $50,000 bond or a partial bond of $75,000 by Albany City Court Judge John Reilly.

But his private criminal defense attorney, George LaMarche, said  Akkan won’t be able to post bail because the feds have filed an immigration detainer against him, keeping him locked up.

Court records show Akkan has an address listed in Troy, NY, but he is not a US citizen, and his lawyer confirmed on Thursday that he does have family in the Albany capital region.

He was arrested by US Border Patrol agents on Nov. 5 last year after crossing into San Diego, California, illegally, a Homeland Security source told The Post.

Akkan informed agents he was trying to get to Philadelphia but failed to provide an address.

Just days later, he was released on his own recognizance due to a lack of bed space and ordered to appear in a Philadelphia court on Feb. 19, 2025, the source added.

Albany cops received an alert about his immigration status via an FBI database when he was fingerprinted in the wake of the alleged rape, according to court filings.

Akkan was arraigned last Wednesday and had been held without bail at the Albany County Jail.

Police in Albany have taken heat for failing to notify the public of the vicious sexual assault until after the local news outlet started probing — even as the suspect was on the loose for about a month.

“The reasoning shouldn’t matter, the fact the public wasn’t informed of such an atrocity is disgraceful,” New York State Senate Republicans posted on X.

“A shocking lack of concern for New Yorker’s safety.”

In a statement this week, police defended the decision.

“The common practice by the Albany Police Department is that information regarding sexual assaults are not released through a media release to prevent further trauma to the victim, unless there are other extenuating circumstances,” such as a potential threat to the community, Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said.

“We want to assure the community that immediately after this incident was reported an assessment was conducted and it was determined that there was no imminent threat to the public.”

Wow! How did they come up with that decision?

Hawkins said cops weren’t aware of Akkan’s immigration status until after his arrest and that it had no bearing on the handling of the case. The number of Turkish migrants crossing the southern border illegally has skyrocketed under the Biden administration due, in part, to smugglers boasting on social media about how easy it is.

There were roughly 1,400 Turkish migrants encountered by border agents along the US-Mexico border in fiscal year 2021, which exploded to more than 15,000 each in fiscal years 2022 and 2023, federal data reviewed by The Post shows.

Why are Turks invading the USA in such numbers? Turkey is a relatively stable country, with a decent economy, and is quite peaceful, at the moment. Are they on a immigration jihad experiment?

Like Akkan, most of the Turkish border crossers who came last year crossed into the San Diego region.

Some smugglers have taken to Turkish language Telegram channels to advertise such routes as they offer secure flights and travel across the border.  

Akkan’s arrest adds to the slew of grim cases across the US that have allegedly been inflicted by illegal immigrants of late — including the savage murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray in Texas earlier this month.

Two illegal Venezuelan migrants — Franklin Jose Pena Ramos, 26, and Johan Jose Rangel Martinez, 21 — are accused of killing the young girl after stripping her naked to the waist and assaulting her for two hours.
