Pakistan ‘honour killing’ video sparks national outrage

A viral video showing the so-called honour killing of a couple accused of having an affair has sparked national outrage in Pakistan.

The video shows the woman, Bano Bibi, being handed a Koran by a man police have identified as her brother.

“Come walk seven steps with me, after that you can shoot me,” she says, before walking forward and coming to a halt with her back to the men.

Her brother, Jalal Satakzai, then shoots her three times in the back before she falls to the ground.

He then shoots and kills the man Ms Bibi was accused of having an affair with, Ehsan Ullah Samalani.

After the video, taken in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, went viral, police arrested 16 people, including a tribal chief and the woman’s mother.

The mother, Gul Jan Bibi, said the killings were carried out by family and local elders based on “centuries-old Baloch traditions” and not on the orders of the tribal chief.

“We did not commit any sin,” she said in a video that also went viral. “Bano and Ehsan were killed according to our customs.”…

And that is precisely why Pakistan is still living in the Dark Ages! How absurd to think that murdering a family member can restore honour. Jesus put an end to that kind of logic 600 years before Mohammed invented his religion.

While honour killings in Pakistan were made illegal in 2016, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported at least 405 in 2024, most of them women killed by relatives claiming to defend family honour.

Pakistan in the Dark Ages When It Comes to Child Sex Abuse

In 2015, the total number of child sexual abuse cases in Pakistan was 3,768. This figure brings the number of abused children to 10 percent per day. 

Well, actually, it brings it to ten per day, not 10%. Although, 10% might actually be closer to the truth.

The number also shows an increase of seven percent from the previous year. According to statistics compiled from 84 national, regional and local newspapers, 1,974 girls and 1,794 boys have been abused during the past years. 

The report shows that a total of 5,483 abusers – 1,943 acquaintances and 829 strangers – are on record.

1,943 & 829 account for almost exactly half of the total. What were the other half if they weren't acquaintances or strangers? And how is it that there are 1715 more abusers than victims? Does it mean that 30% of abusers were determined to have abused more than one victim in that year?

Moreover, the highest percentage of susceptible age group among children was 11-15 years. At least 2,616 cases of abuse were reported from Punjab, 638 cases reported from Sindh, 207 from Balochistan, 167 from Islamabad, 113 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 21 from Azad Jammu Kashmir, three from Gilgit-Baltistan and three from Fata.

Child abuse inevitably leads to psychological disorders. Many scholars and psychologists have linked sexual abuse in children to several disorders like anxiety, depression, substance abuse, low self-esteem and post-traumatic stress. 

The government needs to understand the correlation between the two and the repercussions this has on society. Stricter laws need to be put in place to prevent cases of child sexual abuse.

Well, you're right Iqra, but soooo much more is needed than stricter laws. First of all, most child sex abuses are not being reported. There are at least 65 million children in Pakistan. In India more than half of all children have been sexually abused. Globally the average is probably around 15%. For Pakistan, I would be surprised if it is less than 30% because of much poverty and great stigma against reporting.

Even if we took a conservative estimate of 20% that would mean 13 million children would be sexually abused before they turn 18. 13m in 18 years would mean 722,000 children are being abused every year. In all probability, it's more than one million per year, and only a few thousand are getting reported. Why is that?

1. Police are discouraging people from reporting

2. Families are discouraging people from reporting

3. Victims themselves are very reluctant to report

Consequently, you get a very small fraction of victims reporting - I would suggest fewer than 5%.

What Pakistan must do is:

1. Train the police to believe child victims, to record every report, and fully investigate them. Children have no voice so when they do speak up - they must not be shut down.

2. Train the police to treat children with care and compassion. If they have been abused they are extremely vulnerable need special handling.

3. Change the court system so as to deal with child sex abuse cases quickly and gently. Children should not have to be in the same room with their abuser, ever.

4. Train judges to ensure the safety of children comes first, ie violent offenders should never be set free while a child victim is still a child.

5. Teach children in elementary school what safe-unsafe touch is, how to report it and who to report it to. Many children don't even know they are being sexually abused. 

6 Cases of Child 'Good Luck' Sacrifice Reported in Run-up to Uganda Elections

Several children were murdered and mutilated as ‘good luck’ sacrifices in the run-up to the recent Ugandan elections, a charity has announced. It stated that many locals believe such acts bring wealth and power.

Six cases of mutilation and murder were reported in the lead-up to the elections, Shelin Kasozi of Kyampisi Childcare Ministries (KCM), a charity that cares for survivors of attempted child sacrifice, told Reuters.

"Child sacrifice cases are common during election time as some people believe blood sacrifices will bring wealth and power," Kasozi said.

She said the cases were reported from October to February in the districts of Ssembabule, Mukono, Buikwe and Mubende, all located in central Uganda.

Moses Binoga, coordinator of the anti-trafficking task force at the Ugandan Interior Ministry, acknowledged that children had been reported missing during the election period, but could not confirm KCM's reports. He said investigations are ongoing.

He did, however, acknowledge that seven child and six adult sacrifice cases were reported in Uganda in 2015, compared to nine child and four adult cases in 2014.

Referring to the past cases, Binoga said the mutilated bodies of children and adults had been found, some of whom had their hearts or livers ripped out. In two cases reported last year, the victims' heads were missing, he said.

In 2012, 82-year-old grandmother Hanifa Namuyanja was sentenced to 15 years in jail for taking part in the sacrifice of her granddaughter Shamim Nalwoga. The child was found with her tongue and eyes cut out and genitals mutilated.

The United Nations said last year that attacks on albino people in Africa were on the rise, linked to a growing demand from political hopefuls seeking body parts retrieved in black magic.

The February 18 election saw President Yoweri Museveni extend his 30-year rule, in a vote slammed by the US and the European Union. Ugandans also took part in municipal and parliamentary elections.

Referred to as Uganda's 'President for Life’, Museveni was described in a 2001 UN report as one of the “godfathers of the illegal exploitation of natural resources and the continuation of the conflict in the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo).”
