A 63-year-old paedophile has been jailed after forcing a four year campaign of horrific sexual abuse on a child.

In May 2019, Wigan man Alan Cunningham began sexually assaulting a nine-year-old child and forced her to send him indecent photographs of herself. His behaviour continued until March 2023 when the mother of a the child noticed inappropriate text messages from Cunningham to her daughter.

Text messages were sent by Cunningham to the victim with comments such as “where are my kisses at the end of messages”, and “you could have took me to the bath too”.

Cunningham was already serving a three year prison sentence for other child sex offences. He will now spend another 15 years in prison and a further four years on extended licence.

Cunningham pleaded guilty in June 2023 to four counts of sexual activity with a girl under 13 and possessing indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child, Greater Manchester Police have said.

Cunningham was also made to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely today (Friday 4 October 2024) at Liverpool Crown Court.

Following examination, a number of category C images were found on the device seized from Cunningham, with him requesting that the victim send nude pictures in return for money.

His conviction follows an investigation led by the Wigan Complex Safeguarding Team and Detective Sergeant Vicki Flemming. DS Flemming said: “Firstly, I must thank the victims and their families for having the strength and courage to come forward and allow us to fully investigate this case.

“Today’s result is the culmination of a thorough investigation by our safeguarding team, Cunningham’s conviction means another dangerous offender is put behind bars where he can no longer harm children.

“Some concerning messages and images had been found on the device seized from the defendant, with the victim featuring in those images. This was a concerning case for the victim’s family, but I hope today’s result can provide them with some form of solace.

“We encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault, or knows someone who has, to come forward and speak to the police. We will listen to you and we will investigate.”

Grays, UK man jailed for multiple sexual offences

against a child

A man previously convicted of multiple sexual offences has been jailed.

Brett Baker appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Friday October 4 where he was given a 17-year sentence following an investigation by the Essex Police Child Abuse Investigation Team.

An investigation into the 33-year-old was launched on January 27 2021 after police received a report regarding concerns for a child in the Thurrock district.

Baker was arrested and released on bail whilst officers carried out multiple enquiries including conducting sensitive interviews with the young victim.

Throughout the interviews, which were supported by independent support agencies, the victim disclosed that Baker had sexually abused her on multiple occasions.

Forensic specialists also located key evidence which would be very significant in the investigation.

Baker, of River View, Grays, was charged with two counts of rape, three counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault.

He denied all charges but was found guilty by a jury of all counts on Tuesday May 28 following a week-long trial at Basildon Crown Court.

The sentence is made up of 16 years in custody and one year on licence.

He will be on the sex offenders register for life and was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order for an indefinite period.

Detective Constable Jeffery Wainman, investigating officer in the case said: “This was a complex investigation where our priorities were to safeguard the victim and gather the evidence needed to pursue a criminal conviction against Baker.

“It’s difficult to comprehend the suffering that Baker has caused the young victim. Her bravery in speaking with us and outlining Baker’s behaviour should never be underestimated.”
