Pennsylvania man convicted of child sex abuse
following retrial
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Officials in Somerset County say a local man has been convicted of all 33 counts he faced in a child sex abuse case that was retried after the state Superior Court granted him an appeal.
District Attorney Molly Metzgar says the four-day retrial of Michael Merringer ended with a Somerset County jury once again finding him guilty on all counts, which included rape of a child and incest.
“I would like to thank the jury for their attention and dedication in our pursuit of justice for the victims of Mr. Merringer and to Trial Deputy Christina DeMarco-Breeden and Pennsylvania State Police Corporal Shawn Reynolds who dedicated countless hours to ensure Mr. Merringer answered for the heinous acts he committed against these children for decades," District Attorney Molly Metzgar.
Authorities say Merringer was initially charged in 2019 following a state police investigation into claims of repeated sexual abuse that reportedly dated back to the mid-1990s.
Merringer was later convicted, in March of 2022, and was then sentenced to serve up to 50 years behind bars.
“This conviction is a reminder that crimes on the children of Somerset County will not be tolerated," DA Metzgar added.
Merringer is being held at the Somerset County Jail while he awaits sentencing.
Florida woman who planned with husband
to groom children for sex sentenced
to more than 21 years

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. – A U.S. District Judge sentenced Meggin Anne Evans, a 35-year-old Middleburg woman, to serve 21 years and 10 months in federal prison for the production of child sexual abuse material.
She has been in custody since her arrest in 2022. She pleads guilty in March.
According to court documents, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) started an investigation after receiving information about child sexual abuse material being sent on a social media account.
Investigators later learned the files were sent from within the Putnam County Jail.
PCSO connected the social media account to Brandon Paul Smolinski, Evans’ husband, who was working for a transportation company at the time and had worked inside the jail.
According to PCSO, the company provided Smolinski’s work schedule, where he was working at the time, in the jail, and the dates and times the files had been shared.
CCSO investigators discovered at Smolinki’s home he uploaded the files to the same social media account.
Detectives from both counties approached Smolinki in the parking lot at the Putnam County Jail. He admitted to distributing the files and watching them with Evans, according to investigators.
Upon their discovery of Smolinski’s cellphone, they showed multiple files of child sexual abuse material, including a video sent to Evans on June 27, 2022. In addition, they found several chat messages between Smolinski and Evans in which they talked about exploiting children and their sexual attraction to children.
Details emerged on October 28, 2021, when Smolinski and Evans discussed performing specific sex acts on children and made future pleads. Evans then sent Smolinski a photograph she had taken of a child to whom Evans had access, depicting child sexual abuse.
In June 2023, Brandon Paul Smolinksi was sentenced for distribution of child sexual abuse. He is serving 17 years and 6 months in federal prison.
“The sentencing of Meggin Evans for production of child sexual abuse material, and her husband’s sentencing earlier this year for distribution, is a testament to the commitment of the detectives and special agents who work relentlessly to combat the sexual abuse of children,” said Tim Hemker, Assistant Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations in Jacksonville. “Working alongside our partners at the Northeast Florida INTERCEPT Task Force, we remain committed in our resolve to identify and rescue child victims and bring child sexual predators to justice.”
Tennessee man sentenced to 100 years in prison
for charges on sexual exploitation of a minor
HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A judge sentenced one Hendersonville man to 100 years in prison without the possibility of parole or early release on sexual exploitation of a minor charges.
According to an Assistant District Attorney, the state introduced images created by Jay Chandler featuring Chandler engaged in sex acts with a 9-year-old in the summer of 2017. Those images were separate from other child sexual abuse material for which Chandler was previously convicted.“[The images] showed the Court that Mr. Chandler had been sexually abusing children for years,” Assistant District Attorney Nathan Nichols said in an email to News 2.
In August, a jury found Chandler guilty on 54 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. The execution of a November 2022 search warrant at Chandler’s residence led to the discovery of numerous electronic devices which Nichols said “revealed thousands of images depicting the sexual abuse of children.”
Chandler also has two other pending cases that will be set for trial following his sentencing hearing. Those cases, Nichols said, involve two victims. One of those victims is an 8-year-old girl that Chandler allegedly raped in 2017, while the other victim is 16. News 2 previously reported that Chandler was the supervisor of a teenage victim at a restaurant.
Officers started an investigation into Chandler in October 2022 when the case was first brought to the mother of the teenage victim’s attention, per an affidavit.
