Student Stripped and Raped on Tahrir Square - Caught on Video

A disturbing video which appears to show a woman being stripped naked and sexually assaulted in Egypt's Tahrir Square has been widely viewed and shared - and has provoked outrage and anger among many on social media.

Although many internet users initially thought the video showed events from Sunday, the video appears to have been first uploaded on 4 June - the day after official results from the presidential election were announced.

The original video was removed from YouTube due to its graphic nature, and an amended version was re-uploaded on Sunday. It has been watched more than 130,000 times. It shows a woman with blood on her body being stripped naked and surrounded by men. She is then escorted to an ambulance.

The heavily censored video can be seen here. The only thing you can really see is the utter madness of a mob of Islamic men.

Egyptian blogger Nervana Mahmoud called the incident "despicable", and "another reminder that Egypt has a long way to address its violence against women".

Before leaving office, outgoing President Adly Mansour issued a decree making sexual harassment a criminal offence, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds ($7,000).

Egyptian police have arrested seven men for sexually assaulting a student. It's unclear if this is related to the video or not.
