PETALING JAYA: R.AGE is launching a nationwide online campaign – MPs Against Predators – at 4.45pm today via Facebook live stream, to push for legislation against child sexual crimes.
The campaign, an extension of R.AGE’s Predator in My Phone series, aims to enlist the public’s help in lobbying Members of Parliament (MPs) to support the proposed Child Sexual Crimes Bill.
The Bill was drafted by the task force set up by the Prime Minister’s Department, and will include new laws against child sexual grooming.
Sexual grooming is the practice of befriending a child with the intention to sexually exploit them.
MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the increase in child sexual abuse and exploitation cases shows that society may have taken the wellbeing, safety and education of children for granted.
According to police statistics,
“I am excited to see the young team at R.AGE make a stand against child sexual abuse with their MPs Against Predators campaign,” said Dr Wee.
“I fully support this campaign, as I choose to stand behind any cause that will ensure the wellbeing of our children,” he said, adding that he hoped his fellow MPs would support it in Parliament.
Other MPs supporting the campaign include Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Nancy Shukri and Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.
The launch today will see the release of brand new content from the Predator series, including an interview with a victim of sexual grooming, conducted by campaign ambassador, actress Lisa Surihani.
“I think this campaign is a very good initiative. Awareness has been raised, the public has been called to pledge, and now we’re asking the MPs to do the same,” said Lisa.
Lisa will make an appearance during the live launch broadcast to talk about her experiences throughout the Predator series and subsequent campaign.
“If it weren’t for this campaign, I wouldn’t have known that this is an issue that is going on in our society. And I’m still learning about it,” said Lisa, who has a year-old daughter.
Other personalities who will be making an appearance during the live Facebook broadcast are Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, Syed Azmi Alhabshi, Jin Lim of JinnyboyTV and Marianne Tan.
