KC couple facing charges for years of frequent alleged sexual, physical child abuse
Another family from Hell - drugs are usually involved
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City couple is facing numerous charges after prosecutors say the husband physically and sexually assaulted children who were related to him over many years and his wife also allegedly assaulted the children.
Arthur Peterman, 47, has been charged with three counts of statutory rape, four counts of first-degree child molestation, seven counts of abuse or child neglect, one count of child endangerment, and two counts of furnishing pornography to a minor. Altogether, he is facing 17 charges in Jackson County.
Jenny Peterman has been charged with three counts of child endangerment and three counts of child abuse or neglect.
Court documents said police were called to the couple's home on a child welfare check. Arthur Peterman let officers into the home where police found two children, a 7-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, in filthy condition.
Both children were removed from the home and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
The boy told investigators Arthur Peterman burned him and that he frequently got "beat." Police said when officers found the boy, he had several burns and cuts on his body.
The 47-year-old also allegedly sexually assaulted a 9-year-old girl, sometimes in the presence of the boy. The girl told police Arthur Peterman sexually assaulted her more than one time and told her it happened because he thought she was his wife.
According to court documents, Jenny Peterman allegedly watched her husband sexually abuse the girl and she also physically abused both children. The children told investigators they were told not to tell anyone else what was going on.
Court records also say Arthur Peterman displayed pornography and methamphetamines in the home and used the drugs with the children. Police said the 9-year-old girl tested positive for the drug after officials removed her from the home.
Police said both children were regularly kept home from school, and a witness said the children had not completed a full year of school yet.
According to court records, Arthur Peterman also abused an older child, who is now an adult, for years on a regular basis. The now-19-year-old told investigators the alleged abuse started when she was 4 years old.
When interviewed by police, Arthur Peterman refused to speak. Jenny Peterman denied the allegations when confronted by police and said the children were "story tellers." She also said she home-schooled the children but couldn't show police any books because they were "put up."
Arthur Peterman's bond has been set at $150,000 cash; Jenny Peterman's bond has been set $25,000. Initial court appearances have not been scheduled yet.

An East Aurora School District teacher has been charged with violating reporting provisions after she allegedly knew another employee was sexually abusing children.
Elizabeth Aguilar, a teacher at Bardwell Elementary School, was charged by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office with misdemeanor failing to contact a state agency to investigate abuse, a criminal complaint filed Oct. 10 states. She is due in Kane County court on Oct. 31.
Aguilar, 42, is a first-grade teacher, according to the district’s website. As a teacher, Aguilar is required by the Illinois Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act to be a mandated reporter and must immediately report suspected abuse and neglect to the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services.
Aguilar is accused of knowing about abuse between March 6 and March 8 and had reasonable cause to believe that a child known to her was abused, the complaint states.
Then-kindergarten teacher Juan C. Avendano was arrested March 10 and charged with 18 felonies, including predatory criminal sexual abuse and aggravated sexual abuse. Child victims are not identified by name, but by their initials in criminal complaints. The initials of the child Avendano is accused of abusing and the initials of the child Aguilar failed to report on are the same.
Authorities declined to link the two cases.
Avendano, 62, of the 1300 block of South Glen Circle in Aurora, is accused of sexually abusing two children under the age of 13 from April 2014 to March 2018. The physical contact occurred on school premises, court documents state.
A woman who claims her child was sexually abused at Bardwell is suing the school district, Bardwell Principal Twila Garza and Avendano. In the lawsuit, the mother claims she told district officials multiple times about Avendano’s behavior, but they failed to contact a state agency to investigate.
The woman said her daughter told her about Avendano’s behavior, according to the lawsuit. The mother requested a meeting with Garza in September 2014.
At the end of the meeting, Garza “vehemently” rejected the mother’s allegations, the lawsuit states.
Avendano’s inappropriate conduct with the daughter got worse after the meeting, according to the lawsuit.

Elderly Illinois man imprisoned for
2nd child sex assault
Pekin Daily Times
By Michael Smothers / Times Correspondent
An elderly Pekin man fearfully asked a pre-teen boy if he was going to go to prison for the rest of his life for luring the child into a sexual assault.
Jerry Riddle, 79, received his answer Monday when he was sentenced to 30 years in prison on two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under 13.
Riddle will serve four more years for violating the probation he received two years ago for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a pre-teen girl. In all, he’s required to serve at least 27 years of his terms.
He pleaded guilty to the latest charges that were filed in August, two months after the boy revealed his assault to an individual who contacted police.
Met in church
The boy told officers he met Riddle at the church both attended. Riddle eventually persuaded him to come to his apartment in the 300 block of Caroline Street for ice cream, according to a prosecutor’s court affidavit. There he photographed, disrobed and sexually touched the boy.
In a text message sent to the boy’s cellphone later in May, Riddle said, “I’m sorry if I upset u. I’m just a lonely old man who thought he was going (sic) ice cream with a new friend and someone to talk to.”
Two days later, Riddle texted a plea for the boy to forgive him and asked, “Did you tell,” and “R u sending me to prison for the rest of my life.”
As part of his probation term, Riddle was required but failed to complete a polygraph, or lie detector test, about his prior sexual history.

Texas High School track coach accused of
having sex with 16y/o student
Daniel Borunda, El Paso Times
A former Irvin High School girls track coach arrested last month is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl at his home and at a park, according to court documents.
Bryan Everett Stewart, 34, was arrested in Kansas and extradited to El Paso, where he faces two counts of improper relationship between an educator and student.
When questioned in May during an investigation by El Paso Independent School District police, Stewart allegedly admitted having a relationship with the girl but denied having sex with her, according to complaint affidavits obtained by the El Paso Times.
The documents filed by EPISD police alleged that Stewart and the girl had a relationship during the 2017-18 school year.
Stewart was a health teacher and the girls track coach at Irvin High School.
The girl, who is not named in the documents, was a student at Irvin who has since transferred to another school.
Began flirting
According to the complaint affidavits, the girl told a forensic interviewer at the Child Advocacy Center that it all began with Stewart flirting with her in August 2017.
The girl was at the book room at Irvin High when Stewart "approached her and complimented her on how nice she looked," the complaint states. "The two of them flirted with each other during the school year" and Stewart convinced the girl to join track, the complaint states.
Documents state that the two became friends on Facebook, exchanged phone numbers and would text message each other, with Stewart suggesting they use a communication app named Line.
The complaint states that Stewart and the girl flirted and sent photos to each other. The girl said told the interviewer that Stewart sent her shirtless photos of himself and that she sent him photos of her wearing only a bra. No nude photos were shared.
'Like boyfriend and girlfriend'
The girl told the interviewer that she and Stewart first kissed "like boyfriend and girlfriend" under the Irvin High School stadium after a track practice in February, according to the complaint.
Stewart later told the girl that his wife and kids were out of town and that they could meet, according to the complaint.
The documents allege that Stewart picked up that girl in his tan truck after she attended a seven-on-seven football game at Parkland High School and then took her to his home in the 5000 block of Silver Cholla Drive.
The girl told the interviewer that while she was at Stewart's home, "things happened" and they had sex, the complaint states. The girl told the interviewer that the encounter occurred around March. EPISD police determined the incident took place April 7 when Stewart's family was in California on April 6-9.
The girl told investigators that she and Stewart allegedly had sex a second time, this time after a track meet in his truck parked at Nations Tobin Park on Railroad Drive, documents state. An EPISD police investigation determined the second sexual encounter occurred on April 10 after the District 1-5A track meet.
Documents mention that EPISD police learned of the allegations on April 19 and began an investigation. An EPISD spokesman said Stewart resigned from the district on April 20.
Stewart is the son of Leon Stewart, a former longtime football coach at Irvin.
Stewart denies allegations
The complaint states that Stewart "denied the allegations and refused to cooperate with EPISD District Officials." In a May 24 video-recorded interview with EPISD police, Stewart denies having sex with the girl. He admitted taking her to his home but claimed they only hung out, documents state.
Stewart also admitted to being with the girl at Nations Tobin Park but denied having sex and again claimed they only hung out, the complaint states.
The complaint alleges that Stewart contacted the girl on her cellphone from an unknown number after she had left Irvin High School. Stewart allegedly asked the girl to lie to police about them having sex and "advised the victim that she would only get in trouble for lying but he would go to jail," according to the complaint.
When questioned by EPISD police, Stewart claimed that he had not had any contact with the girl since the investigation started, the complaint states.
Arrest in Kansas
A warrant for Stewart's arrest was issued July 24. A few days later, the U.S. Marshals Service learned that Stewart had left El Paso and had gotten a job in Kansas.
Stewart was returned to El Paso after being arrested Aug. 9 during a traffic stop on a Kansas highway while U.S. Marshals were on his trail.
Stewart is currently free on a $50,000 bond after being released from the El Paso County Jail on Sept. 1. The case is pending in court.

Daniel Borunda, El Paso Times
An alleged sexual relationship between a Pebble Hills High School teacher and a student was discovered when police surprised the pair in the back seat of parked car, documents state.
Gerardo Saucedo Gomez, 38, was arrested last week on a charge of improper relationship between educator and student.
Saucedo has been placed on administrative leave by the Socorro Independent School District, SISD spokesman Daniel Escobar said.
Saucedo is an English teacher who has been with the Socorro district since 2006, Escobar said.
According to court documents, an investigation began after Saucedo and the female student were found allegedly making out in the back seat of a car by El Paso police patrol officers.
The name and age of the student were not disclosed. Court documents mention that she is a senior at Pebble Hills High School.
At 11:30 p.m. Nov. 13, officers were patrolling and checking businesses when they spotted two cars parked next to each other behind a shopping strip at 1510 N. Zaragoza Road, according to a complaint affidavit filed by a detective.
The document states that police found Saucedo and the student in the back seat of Saucedo's black Dodge Charger. Police said Saucedo identified himself as a teacher with the Socorro Independent School District.
According to the complaint document, the student allegedly told police that she and Saucedo were kissing and sexually touching each other and that they had sex in the past. The student was interviewed by detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit.
The student allegedly told detectives that she and Saucedo had a relationship since her freshman year when he began kissing her about twice a week in his classroom throughout the year, the affidavit states.
The pair talked outside of school via text messages and they regularly met at the same location where they were found by patrol officers, the complaint states.
The student told investigators that the relationship turned sexual in October and that she had sex with Saucedo on two occasions, documents state.
Detectives also obtained text-message conversations between the teacher and student alluding to a sexual relationship, the complaint states.
On Nov. 20, detectives arrested Saucedo on a charge of improper relationship between educator and student.
El Paso County Jail records show he was released the next day on a $20,000 bond.
'Habitual offender' sentenced to 131 years
for child sex abuse in New Mexico
Marian Camacho
OTERO COUNTY, N.M. - A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 131 years in prison for sexually abusing a child.
Christopher Mitchell was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual penetration of a minor and seven counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor in the second degree.
The verdict came down after just two days of a jury trial.
According to prosecutors, the Alamogordo Police Department interviewed a mother who believed Mitchell, who was her boyfriend at the time, had been having sex with her daughter.
Two years later, when the child was 17, she came forward saying Mitchell had been sexually abusing her since she was 10.
Under New Mexico law, Mitchell is considered a habitual offender and therefore was given an additional year for each offense. He will be required to serve 85-percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole meaning he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
“Unfortunately, this case is not an atypical case of child sexual abuse. Victims oftentimes choose not to disclose the abuse, or deny the abuse until they are separated from their abusers.” District Attorney John P. Sugg said.
“In this case, the victim was separated from Mitchell because he was arrested on other charges allowing her to feel safe and secure enough to disclose the sexual abuse. Thankfully, there were also two dedicated Alamogordo Police Officers, the late-Clint Corvinus, and Detective Kyle Graham, who recognized something was wrong so they persisted with their investigation. These convictions and today’s sentence would not have been possible without the bravery of the victim and the dedication of those officers.”
Man arrested on sex abuse charges days after pleading guilty to child abuse in Alabama
By Cliff Williams
An Alexander City man was arrested on sexual abuse charges last week.
Tony L. Dates, 53, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant that was issued Dec. 18, 2017.
“It involves a 12-year-old girl,” Alexander City Police Department deputy chief James Easterwood said. “It doesn’t appear to be rape.”
Easterwood explained the delay between the issuance of the warrant and the arrest was because the report was made through a family member in the Montgomery area causing more agencies to be involved in the matter.
Dates is being held in the Tallapoosa County Jail on $75,000 bond.
To make matters worse, Dates pleaded guilty in front of Judge Tom Young Jr. just last month to willful abuse of a child in a plea agreement that would have Dates serving four years in prison. The district attorney’s office had reserved the right to sign off on a recommendation until Oct. 29 when Dates is due in court again on the older abuse charge.
