Doctor accused of infecting over
400 Pakistani children with HIV
By Sommer Brokaw

Dr. Muzaffar Ghangharo, a Pakistani local pediatrician alleged to have been responsible for the HIV outbreak, sits behind bars at a police station in Ratodero, Pakistan. Ghangharo was arrested on April 30 on charges of infecting hundreds of patients, mostly children at the facility with HIV, for avenging him being affected by HIV, a charge he denied. (UPI) -- More 400 children have been diagnosed with HIV in a Pakistani town as several families accuse a local doctor of spreading the virus through tainted syringes.

More than 607 people - - 75 percent of them children -- have been diagnosed with HIV in the Sindh province's Larkana (central Pakistan) in the past past month after many rushed to a government hospital to get tested as word spread of an outbreak.

The first sign of the outbreak occurred in February when parents from the town of Ratodero, a subdivision in Larkana province, took their children to a doctor with a fever that seemed to be lasting longer than normal. The doctor sent their blood away for testing, which turned out HIV-positive.

Police have arrested the town's child specialist, Muzaffar Ghangharo, who has AIDS, with at least 10 families accusing him of infecting their children through tainted syringes.

Ghangharo was to appear in court Tuesday.

In statement to police, Ghangaro said "he didn't do anything intentionally," officer Sartaj Jhagirini said, but "four kids have died and their parents have blamed the doctor for killing them."

Previous outbreak linked to transgender prostitutes

Another HIV outbreak hit the same province a few years ago, which resulted in 1,521 people diagnosed, most men linked to transgender prostitutes.

Dr. Asad Memon, head of the Sindh AIDS Control Program in Larkana, said he believes the 2016 outbreak could be indirectly related to the current outbreak.

"I think the virus was being carried by members of the high-risk group (transgender and female prostitutes) and then lax practices by local quacks caused it to infect other patients," he told the BBC.

Dr. Fatima Mir, who specializes in AIDS among children, said that quack doctors were most likely tied to the HIV outbreak in children in 2016.

"There are three ways a child may be infected," Mir said. "It's either through a lactating mother who carries the virus, through blood transfusion, or through an infected surgical instrument or a syringe."

No, Dr. Mir, there is a fourth way, through sexual contact. If you did your research, I'm positive you would find a significant percentage of HIV+ kids had been sexually abused.

In the cases she handles, she said that the mothers tested negative and only of few of the children had blood transfusions, so the only remaining cause was reusing infected syringes.

Please, do your research. You seem to believe that children would never be subjected to sexual abuse by Pakistani men, or perhaps, by HIV+ Pakistani men. If so, you are very naive, and it is limiting your effectiveness.

SA paedophile jailed for 40 years for abusing children in Australia and Thailand
By Sarah Mullins

An Adelaide paedophile who sexually violated 13 children — in offending described as one of the worst in Australian legal history — has been jailed for 40 years.

Ruecha Tokputza showed no emotion as he was sentenced to 40 years and three months in jail with a non-parole period of 28 years.

District Court Judge Liesl Chapman described Tokputza, 31, as a "child's worst nightmare" and a menace to the community.

"You are every parents horror," she said. "Unfortunately, there are many like you out there, fortunately you have been caught.

"There is no doubt also you had a terrible start to life because you were sexually abused when you were so young and then again when you were older. The abuse went on for years.

"So much so it was normalised in your mind and you confused it with love. But that does not excuse what you have done.

"Your ability to experience sexual arousal with those young, innocent and trusting boys, over and over again is deeply disturbing."

Tokputza filmed and shared videos of the abuse online

Over six-and-a-half years, Tokputza sexually abused at least 13 children, including one as young as 15 months old.

In some instances, he filmed and shared videos of the abuse online.

Last month, he pleaded guilty to 51 charges, including aggravated indecent assault, sexual intercourse with a child and engaging in sexual intercourse with a child outside Australia.

His offending took place in Adelaide and Thailand between June 2011 and his arrest in January 2018.

The 40-year sentence handed to Tokputza surpasses the previous longest jail term in South Australian legal history for child sex offences committed by former Families SA carer Shannon McCoole.

McCoole was jailed for 35 years.

Snowtown killers John Justin Bunting and Robert Joe Wagner were sentenced to life without parole, while double child killer Dieter Pfennig was sentenced to 60 years.

Triple murderers Steven Graham Peet and Jason Alexander Downie received 36-year and 35-year sentences respectively.

Prosecutors could not think of worse offending

Last month, prosecutor Heath Barklay said it was "hard to think of more serious offending".

He said Tokputza's offending was without comparison in Australian legal history and was much more serious than that of McCoole, who sexually abused seven children in state care.

"The offending in [the McCoole case] lasted about three-and-a-half years, he was sentenced on the basis that he voluntarily assisted … had a written apology and … was remorseful for his offending," Mr Barklay said.

"In contrast to this matter, where there are 50 cases, 13 child victims, offending spanning six-and-a-bit years.

"In this case, there was no remorse or no apology."

Tokputza was also found in possession of 12,500 images and 650 videos of child exploitation material.

That is, child sexual abuse material!

Telford, UK child sex abuse trial told of
phone data checks by phone expert
|
By Deborah Hardiman | Telford

The jury in the trial of three men accused of sex offences against a Telford girl have heard how data checks put her mobile phone at the same locations as one of her abusers.

L-R - Hizam, Sulayman, Qasem

Ghamer Sulayman, 23, Ayad Hizam, 21, and Saleh Qasem, 20, who are charged with a total of 20 offences in relation to the alleged victim, who was aged 15 at the time.

The case relates to several incidents in 2016 when she was taken to hotels and car parks in Telford, and a house in Birmingham to meet a number of men who allegedly abused her.

Giving evidence at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday, telecommunications analyst Naomi Tentioeve said that data and cell siting checks put phone numbers belonging to the victim and Hizam in the vicinity of two hotels in Telford town centre at the same time and on the same dates.

The case so far:

Sulayman, of Mercia Drive, Kings Heath, Birmingham, faces seven counts of rape and three of trafficking. Qasem, 20, of Runcorn Road, Balsall Heath, faces one count of sexual assault and one of trafficking. Hizam, of Bridgecroft, Balsall Heath, also Birmingham, faces four counts of abduction and four counts of sexual activity with a child. All three deny the alleged offences between March and July 2016.

The teenager, now 18, previously told the court that at one time she considered Hizam whom she knew as "Nathan" to be her boyfriend.

That's how grooming works!

The trial continues.

Ex SDA teacher jailed for WA child sex abuse

AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATED PRESS

A former teacher at a religious school who sexually abused two boys in Western Australia dating back up to 40 years has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Lester Bryce Keegan, 66, pleaded guilty in the WA District Court to four historical charges related to indecently dealing with two boys between 1979 and 1988.

The first offence happened when Keegan was a teacher at a small religious school in the state's South West region.

He regularly invited the boy, aged between five and 10, to his home for fellowship and on one occasion inappropriately touched the child in the shower, the court heard.

It took years for the victim to tell anyone what happened to him.

The other offences occurred a few years later when Keegan moved to Perth and had a 13-year-old boy, whose parents he had befriended, stay at his home.

Keegan targeted the boy as he slept and repeatedly tried to rape him, the court heard.

Defence counsel Seamus Rafferty said his client accepted he needed to be "punished for the sins of the past".

But he said Keegan did not have a sexual interest in children, rather he was struggling with homosexuality, which was forbidden under his Seventh-day Adventist faith.

There's a big difference between homosexual inclinations and prepubescent children. One may lead to the other eventually, because sin is progressive. But it makes no sense to me that a homosexual bent would begin with children unless the perp was a child himself.

Judge Wendy Gillan accepted the submission but said Keegan's crimes were still an egregious breach of trust.

Keegan must serve at least two years behind bars before he can be eligible for parole.

Headmaster at a prestigious UK prep school who sexually abused his pupils escaped justice for 10 years after his barrister deliberately misled a court, it is claimed
By JAYA NARAIN FOR MAILONLINE

A headmaster at a prestigious prep school who sexually abused his pupils escaped justice for 10 years after his barrister deliberately misled a court, it has been claimed.

Peter Wright, the head of £30,000-a-year Caldicott School in Buckinghamshire, plied boys with whisky and trips in his sports car before molesting them.

The elite boarding school for boys, which was attended by former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and England cricket captain Andrew Strauss, was rocked after it emerged Wright was at the centre of a web that ensnared 30 boys.

He was sentenced to eight years behind bars in 2014 after being convicted of sexually assaulting five pupils aged between eight to 13 between 1959 and 1970. Three other former teachers were also later convicted of child sex offences.

But Conservative MP Dame Cheryl Gillan has today said he would have faced justice 10 years earlier if his barrister hadn't have deceived the court dealing with his case.

The MP for Chesham and Amersham used her Parliamentary privilege to claim that Andrew Bright QC, who is now a serving judge, deliberately misled Aylesbury Crown Court and deceived a judge to get an earlier trial halted.

In 2003 Wright had been charged with child sex offences against five other pupils at the school and was about to go on trial at Aylesbury Crown Court when the case was abruptly stopped.

Mr Bright, defending Wright, told the court the defence team had written to the school for vital and important copies of the pupil records but had been informed they were not available.

Pictured: Caldicott School in Buckinghamshire where fees are £30,000 a year

They successfully argued that as a result the trial could not go ahead because it would be an abuse of process and the case was stayed - a legal tool used to halt a trial.

Speaking in Westminster today Dame Gillan told the House of Commons the defence team had misled the court because the school had written to the defence team offering to provide them with the pupil records.

She also said the defence team knew this and deliberately misled the Judge Roger Connor - who was set to preside on the case.

Dame Gillan said: 'Had this correspondence been disclosed to the court, it could have assisted the prosecution and could, in all probability, have undermined the grounds of the application to stay the Indictment.

'However, neither the judge nor prosecuting counsel ever saw this correspondence because it was never produced in open court, even though Mr Bright QC, according to the transcript of the proceedings, had it with him in court, and was thus aware of its contents.

'The contents of the hidden correspondence only became known publicly five years later, when in November 2008 the school released it into the public domain.

'It then became apparent to everyone involved in those proceedings how its non-disclosure meant that the court had been misled and in effect deceived into making the order for the stay of the original first indictment.'

Conservative MP Dame Cheryl Gillan has today said he would have faced justice 10 years earlier if his barrister hadn't have deceived the court dealing with his case

Tom Perry, one of the five complainants in the first case, said: 'The consequences of Aylesbury Crown Court being misled by the defence team were profound, the most obvious being the decade delay before this career child abuser was imprisoned.

'Many more complainants came forward when Wright was charged but, because of he stay, they police were unable to progress with their cases so those have never been heard. IT is a complete disgrace.'

Wright, who was headmaster at Caldicott for 25 years, retiring in 1993, eventually faced justice when he was charded and found guilty in 2013 of abusing five other former pupils.

The jury was told he would reward his favourite blond, blue-eyed boys with trips in his sports car. He would also invite them to his bedsit to watch television and drink whisky.

He would sneak into the dormitories, wake his favourite and tell him to go back to his room and into his bed, where he would abuse them.

Three other teachers, Hugh Henry, John Addrison and Martin Carson were also convicted of child sex offences at the school with Addrison jailed for five years and Carson for two years.

Henry was killed by a train shortly before he was due to be sentenced, his death a presumed suicide.

Another paedophile commits suicide, foolishly thinking he will escape punishment!

The case was the subject of the Channel 4 documentary, 'Chosen', which detailed the scandal and the lack of legal action.

Now Dame Gillan has demanded an overhaul of the legal disclosure system to prevent future miscarriages of justice.

She told the House: 'Because the Judge is wholly dependent on the oral submissions made to him, the absence of the production of evidence makes it easier to mislead a court than would otherwise be the case. I understand that there is growing evidence of malpractice arising out of this procedure.'

And why is Judge Bright not being investigated by the bar?

Former UK army officer jailed for online child sex abuse
Sonia Elks

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A former British Army officer who spent thousands of pounds on directing and viewing live-streamed child sexual abuse from the Philippines was sentenced to more than three years in prison on Wednesday.

Anti-slavery groups hailed the conviction of Andrew Whiddett, 70, amid a cross-border effort to crack down on cybersex trafficking crimes.

“The Philippines is a global hot spot for online sexual exploitation of children, but the online consumers of this vile abuse are – as in this case - often from Western countries like the UK,” said David Westlake of anti-slavery group International Justice Mission UK.

“It’s vital that perpetrators both here in the UK and abroad are held to account and that sentences are strong enough to act as a deterrent.”

Cybersex trafficking is considered a form of modern-day slavery and the Philippines has become a global epicenter for the crime, with campaigners saying the abuse is largely fueled by rampant poverty.

Rampant poverty and good quality internet which should be disconnected from all but major businesses. Children shouldn't bear the responsibility of correcting a country's poverty, yet it happens all over the world. There are between 250,000 and 500,000 child prostitutes in Brazil alone. Meanwhile, wealthy countries spend their fortunes making weapons and devising ways to save the planet from climate change hysteria. What a stupid, crazy world!

Former lieutenant colonel Whiddett committed his crimes with the help of known Filipino child sex abuse facilitators over Skype, said officials at Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

Whiddett made nearly 50 payments totaling 5,473 pounds ($6,938) to a woman between January 2015 and July 2017. During conversations in 2016 he also discussed carrying out abuse himself during a planned trip the Philippines.

Investigators were able to show that in November 2015, he paid 31.41 pounds to watch a nine-year-old girl be abused.

Britain’s NCA passed intelligence to their Filipino counterparts who arrested one person for facilitating child sex abuse and took measures to protect six children aged between three and 14.

Whiddett, who has no previous convictions, was arrested in October 2017 at Heathrow Airport and initially claimed his online payments were for adult sex shows.

He was jailed after he admitted six charges including live-streaming offences and making indecent images of children.

“Live-streaming sex crimes exploit the vulnerable; he was helped in this case by facilitators whose motive is to make money,” said Gary Fennelly, a senior investigating officer at the NCA. “The NCA does important work with international law enforcement partners in the Philippines to combat these sorts of crimes.”

“Anyone like Whiddett should realize that the NCA and UK police will never give up our pursuit of offenders who commit these horrific crimes.”

Whiddett, of Portsmouth, Hampshire, committed his crimes after he retired from the army.

Sex doll is child porn, but Newfoundland judge finds owner not guilty

Warning: Story contains language that some may find offensive

CBC News

A St. John's man accused of possessing child pornography in an unusual case involving what's been described as a child sex doll has been found not guilty.

The provincial court trial of Kenneth Harrisson, 54, is believed to have been the first in Canada dealing with child pornography charges involving a sex doll.

In his decision Thursday morning, Judge Mark Pike said he believed the doll linked to Harrisson is child pornography, but the Crown hadn't proven Harrisson's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Outside the courthouse after the judge's decision was given, Harrison said he had no comment. Defence lawyer Bob Buckingham spoke on his behalf.

"Mr. Harrisson wishes to say that he is relieved that this matter is over with and his advice to people is to be careful as to what you order online from now on," he said.

Lawyer Bob Buckingham, right, represented Harrisson, left, at the trial in St. John's. (Mark Quinn/ CBC)

Harrisson testified in court that he had ordered an adult doll, not the one that arrived in Canada from Japan in January 2013.

Buckingham also questioned the notion that the sex doll that was seized is child pornography.

"The piece of foam that is before the court, in my opinion and it's only my opinion, is not child pornography. The judge has made a decision otherwise and that stands," he said.

Buckingham also spoke about the impact the six years since his arrest have had on Harrisson.

"It has been draining. It has affected possibly job prospects. The strain was seen when he was giving evidence in his own defence."

Early this year, while Harrisson was testifying, he collapsed and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

While speaking with reporters Buckingham was confronted by child protection advocate Linda Baudoin, who asked the lawyer if he was a "pedophile sympathizer."

"Are you an asshole?" Buckingham responded. "That's an insult to me as a member of the bar."

It should be an insult to anyone. But as a member of the bar he is required to defend his clients to the best of his ability. He shouldn't be criticized for that regardless of the guilt or peculiarity of his client. That's how the justice system works.

If, however, he counsels his client to lie to the court, then he is as guilty as the defendant. I suspect this is what Ms Baudoin was suggesting.

The crown attorney prosecuting is representing the victims or potential victims, although I'm not clear that all prosecutors are truly aware of that.

Baudoin, who came to St. John's from Ontario to hear the judge's decision, said she was disappointed.

"The priority should be protecting children. He ordered it [the doll] and the proof is all there recorded, but because of the reasonable doubt factor, he gets a not guilty verdict," she said.

Doll intercepted at border

Harrisson ordered the doll from Japan in 2013 and it was intercepted at the border.

He testified he did not intend to have sex with the doll and he had ordered it for companionship to replace his son, who died as an infant.

I don't think they make good companions. They are designed for one thing only.

Harrisson said he did a Google search of the term "sex doll" and he chose the photo that showed the most "male-like" face to resemble his son who died in 1986 but would have been around 25 in 2013.

That should have been enough to convict him right there. If he wanted a companion, he should have searched for a companion doll, not a sex doll.

Pike called Harrisson's explanation "incredible," but said the Crown hadn't proved Harrisson intended to buy a doll resembling a child.

The judge also found Harrisson not guilty of additional charges, including mailing obscene matter, and two charges under the federal Customs Act of smuggling and possession of prohibited goods.

Nevertheless, I think he has paid his dues. What concerns me is that it fails to discourage others from ordering sex dolls, which is a symptom of paedophilia.

Charges laid in alleged sexual, physical abuse of 17 children in Canadian First Nation

Two men and a woman from a Manitoba First Nation
charged with multiple child sex offences, RCMP say
CBC News

Two men from Garden Hill have been charged with multiple sexual offences against children in the community, Manitoba RCMP say — including one man who had access to a foster home in the Manitoba First Nation.

An extensive investigation identified 17 alleged victims of physical or sexual abuse that police say occurred between 2011 and 2017. RCMP could not confirm Thursday if the children identified were residents of the Garden Hill foster home.

The children were between the ages of three and 15 at the time of the alleged abuse.

Paul Bruce Harper, a 21-year-old man from the fly-in community 475 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, has been charged with multiple sexual offences, police say. He was first arrested on Feb. 25, 2018, after sexual assaults were reported.

Speaking at a news conference Thursday, Supt. Michael Koppang, who heads up Manitoba RCMP's major crimes services, said police learned during the investigation Harper had access to a residence that served as a foster home for numerous children in the community.

Police, working with Manitoba Child and Family Services, identified 150 children who were in contact with the accused as potential victims. All 150 were then interviewed or assessed.

As the investigation continued, Koppang said a 20-year-old man from the community was arrested on Sept. 7, 2018, and has since been charged with multiple sexual offences. That man cannot be named because he's being charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Both men remain in custody.

Foster mother at home charged

Lucy Harper, a 66-year-old woman who was a foster mother at the home, has also been charged with perjury and two counts under the Child and Family Services Act, including a count of failure to report a child in need of protection and one of failure to provide for a child in need of protection.

She has been released with conditions and is no longer a foster parent, Koppang said. He said he couldn't release information about the nature of the relationship between Paul Bruce Harper and Lucy Harper.

At Thursday's news conference, Koppang issued a plea for any other victims to come forward. "We recognize the possibility that there may be more children who have been victimized and are urging them to come forward and to speak with our investigators," said Supt. Koppang.

"We recognize that calling the police is an extremely difficult step to take but I want to assure anyone who is thinking of coming forward that our officers are professional and compassionate, and will work with victims to explain every step of the process."

Support for victims

Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Arlen Dumas and Garrison Settee, grand chief of the northern First Nations advocacy group Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, told reporters at the news conference their organizations want to work together to support victims.

"It's shocking," Dumas said of the charges. "I felt very strongly that I needed to be here to come and show support to the victims. I let our colleagues know here that there needs to be some vigilance, to assure that everything is done … to help the victims."

"The victims will need a lot of support," said Settee. "We want to ensure that their leadership is behind them and we're there to exercise our duty to protect and also to … facilitate healing to the victims, and also to the community at large."

Dumas said the Garden Hill investigation highlights broader issues in Manitoba. "I don't think it's isolated.… We need to address the overall issue of child welfare in this province," he said.

"There needs to be more accountability measures, and there needs to be more care towards our children and more prevention set forward."

Police said Thursday they have partnered with Klinic Community Health, which can accept reports from survivors of sexual assault who are 16 or older from anywhere in Manitoba.

The survivors can remain anonymous and work with Klinic counsellors to determine the best way forward. The centre's 24-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Line can be reached at 1-888-292-7565.

Interpol Rescues 50 Children, Arrests Nine Sex Offenders From Darkweb Sex Ring

After two years, an international darkweb operation has brought about the rescue of 50 children and the prosecution of at least nine sex offenders from the United States, Thailand, and Australia.

A Thursday press release from Interpol announced their "Operation Blackwrist" had reached new levels as a total 50 children, the youngest being only 15 months old, were rescued from dark web pedophilia ring. In addition, at least nine sex offenders have been either sentenced or await trial for their alleged child sex and exploitation crimes.

Operation Blackwrist began in 2017 after Interpol's Crimes Against Children unit was alerted to sexual material involving the abuse of 11 boys, all aged under 13, during "routine darkweb monitoring," according to the release. Interpol says the content was made accessible to at least 63,000 users across the globe through a subscription-based darkweb site that had been running for some years.

The site, which published new images and videos of sexual abuse against young children, is said to have taken precaution in not revealing any audio or visual clues as to where the content originated.

In order to carry out the operation, named after a wristband consistently worn by an offender, Interpol relied on cooperation from agencies such as Thailand's Department of Special Investigations (DSI), the US' Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

The first arrests came about in January 2018 after Interpol successfully identified the first victims two months prior.

Interpol operational meeting prior to the January 2018 arrests of Salangam and Tokputza.

Montri Salangam, the darkweb site's main administrator, was arrested in Thailand and identified as the man abusing the 11 boys in the videos which sparked the launch of Operation Blackwrist. Interpol says Salangam lured boys, including his own nephew, to his home with promises of "meals, internet access and football games."

Montri Salangam (center) in police custody following his arrest in January 2018.

Simultaneously, Ruecha Tokputza, another site admin, was apprehended in Australia. (See above - 2nd story from top).

Upon both arrests, officers also uncovered thousands of images featuring both administrators as primary abusers. South Australian court proceedings would later reveal the duo's youngest victim was only 15 months old.

In June 2018, Salangam was sentenced to 146 years in prison on charges of child rape, human trafficking and possessing and distributing child sexual abuse materials, according to Channel News Asia. The sentence would later be reduced to 50 years, but Salangam is also required to pay five victims 500,000 baht ($15,600).

An accomplice, identified as a nursery school teacher with close ties to Tokputza, received 36 years in prison from a Thai court after being convicted of the same charges as Salangam.

The Interpol release says an Australian court gave Tokputza "the longest sentence ever imposed in Australia for child sex offences" on May 17 2019: 40 years and three months.

"You are a child's worst nightmare, you are every parent's horror, you are a menace to the community," Judge Liesl Chapman told Tokputza in Adelaide.

Though the release provides no further details on who was arrested, Interpol has made it clear that several other alleged offenders have been captured in the United States, Thailand and Australia as a result of ongoing investigations.

Additionally, Interpol says police in "nearly 60 countries" are currently examining referrals from New Zealand and expect more offenders and rapists to be brought to justice.

"Every child abuse image is evidence of a crime and INTERPOL will always provide its full support to officers on the ground to help identify and rescue victims around the world," Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock noted in the release.

Well done people. God bless you.

Deputy head teacher jailed for
live-streaming child sex abuse

A deputy headteacher who live-streamed children being sexually abused while high on cocaine and crystal meth has  been jailed for 28 months.

Paul Newbury, 50, regularly used the Zoom videoconferencing platform to view, discuss and distribute the most serious child sex abuse images – telling one user he was interested in ‘all ages’.

Undercover officers infiltrated the chat rooms in October 2017 and filmed Newbury sitting naked on his sofa smoking drugs as he watched a live video of a girl aged around eight being abused.

Ex-headteacher admits taking class A drugs while live-streaming child sex abuse in UK

Newbury was also a member of several closed paedophile groups on the secure messaging app Telegram, where he discussed and exchanged child abuse material with hundreds of other members worldwide. He invited fellow paedophiles to join obscene groups with names such as ‘Love Boys’.

Newbury, who was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court, admitted making and possessing indecent images of children in March.  All of the illegal activity took place while he was working as an associate headteacher at a Camden secondary school, although the offences were not connected to his job.

Russell Tyner, CPS specialist prosecutor, said: “Paul Newbury was an active and prolific member of a global network of internet paedophiles committed to sharing live images of children being sexually abused.

"Some of these videos featured very young and vulnerable children in visible distress, which Newbury then shared widely for the twisted gratification of himself and others.

“The fact he helped fuel this industry while working as a teacher only adds to the grotesque and aggravated nature of the offence.

“As well as seeing Newbury jailed, the CPS today sought a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to ensure the clear threat he poses to children is minimised on his release.”

Police raided Newbury’s home in Wood Green in February last year and found two grams of crystal meth, 717mg of cocaine and two glass burning pipes.

The teacher, now sacked, had obtained almost five hours of material from Telegram between September 2017 and February 2018 – some of which he shared via Zoom using his alias ‘north London'.

In total, 1,246 indecent images of children were recovered from his devices – 492 of which were classified under the most serious Category A.

Building the case

Newbury was brought to justice as part of an international operation that saw US and Canadian undercover agents deployed to Zoom chat rooms, which were being used to live-stream the sexual abuse of children.

This evidence was then used by the National Crime Agency and CPS to trace Newbury and ensure he faced the appropriate charges in an English court. CPS prosecutors worked closely with counterparts in the United States and Canada to enable the effective sharing of evidence and intelligence.

Russell Tyner said: “Online child sexual abuse is one of the most serious criminal threats we face and paedophiles all over the world are finding ever-newer technologies to perpetrate their offending.

“But, as this prosecution shows, the CPS and our international partners are determined to work together to bring abusers to justice whatever corner of the internet they hide in.”

Paul Newbury (DOB: 20/02/1969) admitted four counts of making indecent images of children, one of distributing indecent photographs of children, possession of a prohibited image, showing an indecent photograph of a child, possession of an extreme pornographic image and possession of Class A drugs at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on 19 March.

Russell Tyner is a specialist prosecutor with the CPS International Justice and Organised Crime Division.

The ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order imposed on Newbury places strict conditions on his internet use and he will also need to forfeit his devices.

Former Southampton coach Bob Higgins is found guilty of assaulting young trainees

Probe into UK football child sex abuse can now resume

By MIKE KEEGAN FOR THE DAILY MAIL

The long-awaited independent review into child sex abuse allegations in football has taken a further step to completion following the conviction of a youth coach.

Clive Sheldon QC is leading a probe into what the FA and clubs knew and did about allegations of child sexual abuse between 1970 and 2005 in the wake of the scandal which has gripped the sport.

It had been delayed for legal reasons thanks to the trial of ex-Southampton coach Bob Higgins and further allegations against convicted paedophile and ex-Manchester City and Crewe coach Barry Bennell.

On Thursday however Higgins was found guilty of indecently assaulting young trainees, clearing one of the obstacles in Sheldon's path.

A spokesman for the review said it was now 'possible for investigations into what the clubs and FA did or did not know about Higgins to be concluded'.

They added: 'The Review is also awaiting the outcome of further investigations into allegations of abuse by Barry Bennell.'

In February, Bennell was sentenced to 31 years in prison for abusing 12 boys, seven of whom were linked to Crewe Alexandra. A number of allegations have since been made.

Higgins sexually touched and groped 23 boys, mostly of Southampton and Peterborough United, between 1971 and 1996. He was found guilty at Bournemouth Crown Court of 45 counts of indecent assault.

Prosecutors told the court Higgins, viewed as a king maker, was 'idolised' by trainees and that he 'held supreme power over their footballing futures'.

Concerns were first raised over the 66-year-old predator more than 30 years ago, but he was cleared of sexual abuse. However, following an eight-week retrial, held after a previous jury at Winchester Crown Court failed to reach a verdict, justice was served.

Higgins, who showed little emotion in the dock, would let boys stay at his house after training sessions or during school holidays. He gave them lifts to training and gained their trust before pouncing.

There is no suggestion that any of Southampton's biggest names who were coached by Higgins, including Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier, were abused by him. Many of those who were ended up so distressed that they gave up football entirely.

Higgins, who will be sentenced at a later date, was cleared of five counts of the same offence. The jury failed to reach a decision on a further count.

He was found guilty of a further count of indecent assault after a trial last year. Several of Higgins' victims sat in the public gallery and broke into tears as the verdicts were delivered.

Sheldon was asked by the FA in 2016 to look into historical sexual abuse in the sport following a series of allegations by former players.
