Michigan man faces federal and state charges for assault on infant
By Allison Dunn
The Blade
A Detroit-area man was federally arraigned Tuesday for producing and distributing videos of child sexual exploitation and indicted that same day by a Lucas County grand jury for the actual assault of the child in those videos.
John D. Lewis, 61, of Allen Park, Mich., is charged in U.S. District Court in Toledo with production of child pornography, possession of child pornography, and receipt and distribution of child pornography. Lewis was arraigned Thursday after being federally indicted Aug. 13 on those charges.
But he now faces charges in Lucas County Common Pleas Court after a grand jury handed up a felony rape charge on Thursday for the alleged sexual assault of a 5-month-old Toledo girl who was shown in the explicit video, prosecutors said.
When he initially appeared on a criminal complaint filed in federal court, Lewis waived his right to a detention hearing.
On June 9, a Department of Homeland Security agent operating undercover on Kik Messenger, a social media application that allows for users to “talk to your friends and browse and share any website,” entered a chat group whose name indicated child sexual abuse — specifically involving the abuse of toddlers, according to court records.
Just before 6 p.m. that day, Lewis allegedly posted a 39-second video of a child, believed to be less than one year old, being sexually abused.
The agent engaged in a direct conversation with Lewis, who indicated he was the one assaulting the baby girl, who was his friend’s child, records show. A trace of Internet addresses led the investigator to the child’s residence.
Three days later, investigators from the agency’s Detroit office executed a search warrant at the Toledo home and encountered Lewis.
During an interview with investigators, Lewis admitted having filmed the girl’s sexual assault there, then shared the content online, according to court records. He also admitted using Kik Messenger to receive and distribute such material and viewed such content between two and six times per week, the court documents state.
He estimated having distributed such material between 15 and 20 times of children as young as “babies” being subjected to sexual abuse. He also admitted to taking photos of the infant’s genitals and sharing them on social media.
He made additional admissions in a handwritten confession and apology for the infant’s caretakers, saying, “I am writing you this letter to inform you and apologize to you of a terrible act I committed [your infant] had been sexually abused by me. I then took pictures and videos [of them] and shared on social media,” court records show.
He will be arraigned before a Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge at a later date.

Virginia mother of murdered 2-year-old to face jury trial for
child sex crimes charges
by Elizabeth Tyree
MONTGOMERY Co., Va. (WSET) -- A woman facing child sex crimes related to the death of her two-year-son will face a jury trial next year.
According to police, Thomas is the mother of a two-year-old Christiansburg boy who died after a fall. In January 2019, Christiansburg Police said they got a 911 call from Thomas' boyfriend about a boy who had fallen and was unresponsive. Their investigation showed two-year-old Steven Meek died of brutal blunt force trauma to the head.
Their investigation also uncovered an even more horrifying history.
Forensic nurses said they found evidence of sexual abuse at the hands of his mother, Thomas, and her boyfriend, McKenzie Hellman.
Police said they found another child in the home that was also being sexually abused. At the time of this case, Thomas was also pregnant with another child.
Hellman is facing 13 charges that range from child sex crimes, child porn, child abuse, and felony murder.
Last year, Hellman underwent a mental evaluation. His attorney said he had been involuntarily committed to mental health facilities several times.
Thomas was in court Thursday, August 20 where it was decided she will face a three-day jury trial beginning January 20, 2021 in Montgomery Circuit Court, according to the clerk's office.
Hellman is set for a two-day jury trial that will begin October 5, 2020 in Montgomery Circuit Court.
Utah judge throws out previous settlement agreement during sentencing for man who sexually abused 5-y/o
Written by Cody Blowers
St George News
ST. GEORGE — A warning given during a plea hearing in June was carried out by a 5th District Court judge during a sentencing hearing held Tuesday – a ruling that surprised both sides in a case that was wrought with delays, continuances and postponements since it was filed in 2017.
Warren Leonard Black, 43, appeared before 5th District Judge Jeffrey C. Wilcox for a sentencing hearing on two second-degree felony counts of sexual abuse of a child.
The case was filed more than three years ago after Black was following an investigation into a report received by the Division of Child and Family Services involving a 5-year-old girl who had disclosed details of suspected sexual abuse involving the suspect, who was later identified as Black. The defendant was subsequently charged with two first-degree felony counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child.
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Black pleaded guilty to the charges that were amended to second-degree felony sexual abuse of a child during a hearing held last month. As part of the plea deal, both sides agreed to recommend the defendant be placed on supervised probation and that prosecutors would not include a prison sentence in their recommendation, a settlement agreement Wilcox did not support, according to his comments during the plea hearing held in July, when he said he “wouldn’t be bound” by the agreement.
Prior to sentencing Tuesday, defense attorney Michael Lastowski addressed the court by saying that his client has taken responsibility for his actions, worked very hard to repair the damage to the family and “done everything asked of him,” as he has continued working toward reunification with the family.
Prosecutor Ryan Shaum said it is “extremely troubling” when an individual who is in a role to protect a child does the exact opposite and “in such a horrible manner.”
Shaum went on to say that the state’s hands were tied during the investigation, since the child’s mother refused to work with investigators. In fact, he said, once the police interview took place and Black was arrested, all contact with the family ended, and prosecutors have had no access to the child and had never spoken to the little girl. He added that with the Division of Children and Family Services being involved, they had no way to force their hand in the matter.
However, he said, Black should be held accountable for his actions, and while the state agreed to not recommend a prison sentence in exchange for the guilty plea, they were not opposed to the defendant serving time in jail, as recommended in the presentence report.
Shaum closed by saying the sentencing report and many of the discussions were focused on “how is this going to affect Mr. Black,” when instead, he said, the focus should be on how the offenses have affected the child, who did nothing to bring this upon herself.
“It’s time for the focus to be where it should be – on this little girl.”
Wow! What a concept! Radical!
Lastowski said the prosecutor’s comments were untrue and that the focus over the last three years has been “completely” on the little girl. He went on to say that Black is involved in treatment, the child and the family are in counseling and the defendant has followed all of the requirements and guidelines as set forth by the Division of Children and Family Services.
“They’ve done everything that has been asked of them,” Lastowski said, adding that any period of incarceration would only delay the reunification process that has been ongoing for the last three years. He also said that his client has taken responsibility for what happened and has worked hard to repair the damage and to be reunited with his family.
Not sure what 'the reunification process' refers to. Was Black part of the family? Are they working to get him back into the family?
“I would hate for all of that work to be for nothing,” he said. Wilcox referred to Black’s statements that were included in the presentence report, in which Black said “it was a crime of opportunity” and that the case “has completely ruined my life.”
The judge went on to say that unlike many cases that come before the court involving sexual crimes against children, the defendant, in this case, has worked hard and has the support of his family and others.
Wilcox went on to say that in a series of letters sent to the court, including one from a treatment center the defendant is currently involved in, Black has made great strides in his efforts to repair the family. In another letter, the defendant’s wife explained that Black’s absence has caused great hardship on the family, and the defendant’s children “miss him terribly.”
Wilcox said the efforts of the defendant and the support from the family “weighs heavily upon this court.” However, he said, addressing Black, “this isn’t your first brush with the law.”
The judge then referred to a previous case that was filed in 2015 after Black was arrested and charged with misdemeanor sexual battery involving sexual misconduct with a 16-year-old that investigators found took place on at least two occasions in St. George between April and August 2013, and the following year the defendant pleaded no contest to the charge.
In June 2016, he was placed on 18 months supervised probation, which he violated when he was arrested one year later on the charges relating to the 5-year-old. His probation was revoked for failing to abide by the terms of his probation.
The fact that Black admitted to the sexual battery of a 16-year-old in 2016 and then admittedly abused a -5-year-old one year later “is very concerning for this court,” Wilcox said.
“I believe it is the duty of this court to not only help your family and to help you,” he said, “but it is also to protect society.”
True to his word that he was not bound by any agreement between the state and the defense, “or anyone else for that matter,” Wilcox sentenced Black to serve 1-15 years in Utah State Prison on each count to run concurrently during Tuesday’s proceedings, a sentence the defendant would begin on Sept. 1, giving him time to get his affairs in order.
Good call, your honor! He largely escaped responsibility for abusing the 16-year-old; he cannot be allowed to escape responsibility for the 5-year-old. There will be no real reason for him to not take advantage of another 'opportunity'.

A major at the Air Force Academy accused of rape, sexual abuse of a child, and rape of a child (5th story on link) was found not guilty of all charges at a court-martial Tuesday.
Maj. Travis J. Burns, who as of last year worked for the commandant of cadets, faced an Article 32 hearing last May and was charged with several specifications of violating Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which forbids sexual assault. An Article 32 is similar to a civilian grand jury and is meant to decide if there is probable cause to support the charge and its specifications.
According to a charge sheet released at the time, Burns was accused of raping a woman at or near Clovis, New Mexico, on or about Dec. 21, 2013.
Burns was also accused of sexually assaulting and repeatedly molesting a girl who was under the age of 12 in 2017 and 2018, the charge sheet said.
Burns’ trial at the academy began Aug. 10, and he was tried by a military judge at his request. The judge returned not guilty verdicts in all charges and specifications, the academy said in a release Wednesday.
Please excuse my lack of confidence in a military judge deciding on a child sexual abuse case. I don't think it should be an option when children are hurt.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A second grade Mayport Elementary School teacher arrested for allegedly downloading and possessing dozens of videos depicting child sexual exploitation is also linked to a Kik account that contained multiple “non exploitative” pictures of children that “appear to have been taken in a classroom at Mayport Elementary.”
Thomas Hazouri Jr., son of the City Council President and former mayor of the same name, was arrested Wednesday on 25 charges of possessing child pornography. He has not yet had an initial court appearance.
According to the warrant, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children notified the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office that a person had uploaded five files on March 26, 2020, between the hours of 7:47 and 8:57.
The warrant says the email address captured in the Cyber Tip report was tommyhazoouri@gmail.com, an email address that included personal information about Hazouri Jr., including his resume and driver’s license information as well as “pictures and videos of Thomas Hazouri many of which appear to be self-taken.”
According to the warrant, four of those images “meet the definition of child pornography.” One is described as “a video depicting an unknown white pubescent [redacted] child. [Redacted] development is observed on the child however [redacted]. The child is standing in a bedroom, facing the camera and is initially wearing clothing [redacted].”
A second video is described as “a video depicting an unknown white prepubescent [redacted] and an adult white female. Only the top portion of the adult is visible, and she is wearing a shirt and kneeling in front of the child. [redacted] The adult brings her finger to her lips while smiling, motioning for the child to be quiet. [redacted] In the background another child can be heard saying “Mama.” … The adult nudges [redacted] back up, points her finger at [redacted] and says something in an unknown language as she continues sexually battering the child.” The warrant says the video is 1 minute 59 seconds long.
That Cyber Tip led to a search warrant and the seizure Aug. 5 of items from Hazouri Jr.'s home. The warrant says investigators found multiple videos and photos on his iPhone depicting child sexual abuse.
This is a developing story.
Accused Eastern Kentucky man admits to sexually abusing teenage girl, police say
BY JEREMY CHISENHALL
Kentucky State Police arrested a Boyd County man in his 60s after he was accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl, police said.
Larry Whitt, 61, was taken into custody Sunday and charged with first-degree sexual abuse of a child under 12 after police said he was accused of the abuse by a 13-year-old girl. The arresting officer said in a report that the teenage girl was at the Boyd County Courthouse when she accused Whitt of the abuse.
The allegations against Whitt involved sexual abuse which occurred before the girl turned 12, Trooper Bobby King said, which is why the charge was for a victim under 12.
The state trooper responded to the courthouse on Saturday, got a statement from the girl, and then found Whitt at his home in Ashland, according to the arrest citation. Whitt admitted to committing the sexual abuse, the trooper said in the citation. The trooper got an arrest warrant the next day and took Whitt into custody at his house, according to the citation.
Whitt was taken to the Boyd County Detention Center. He has since been released on $25,000 bond, according to court records. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday, according to court records.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KWCH) – U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister announced Thursday a Kansas man with a prior rape conviction was sentenced to more than 16 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography. In addition, he was ordered to pay $95,000 in restitution.
James Minter, 47, pleaded guilty to one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography. In his plea, he admitted that law enforcement received a report from CyberTipline (https://www.missingkids.org/gethelpnow/cybertipline) that he had uploaded a file containing child pornography via the internet.
Investigators tracked the upload to a Minter’s residence in Linwood, Kan. More than 1,000 images and 200 videos depicting the sexual abuse of children were seized from Minter’s devices.
In 1998, Minter was convicted of rape and criminal sodomy after assaulting a 5-year-old child. He was released from prison in May 2018.
And he learned absolutely nothing in 20 years. Good luck with the next 16.
