Ched Evans' rape conviction has highlighted struggles that meet rape victims who are attacked when they have been drinking.
Evans was a professional footballer who was sentenced to 5 years for raping a 19 year old girl who was deemed too drunk to consent to sex. He served half of that sentenced, but has had his football career terminated.
150,000 fans signed a petition asking his club not to take him back and let him play again.
In a similar case, a '5 live Breakfast' listener spoke of her decision not to report her attack because she was intoxicated when it happened. The victim chose not to go to the police through fear of being told "You were drunk, so it's your fault".
She said: "I felt like I'd asked for it but I hadn't, I'd said no. So, obviously it wasn't my fault and I shouldn't have felt guilty."
I dealt with this issue in a previous post. Rape is always the man's fault! But this girl was right to feel some guilt for her own rape because she put herself in a position where rape was far more likely than otherwise. It's not a matter of, "You were drunk, so it's your fault"; it's more a matter of, "You were drunk, so you were not in a condition to protect yourself". "You took an unnecessary risk, and it cost you".
In an ideal world rape should never occur, but this is a fallen world and will be until the second coming. Good grief! There are hundreds of thousands of child molesters out there; no amount of education or any other treatment is going to remove them. The difference is the little children have few if any ways of protecting themselves. You can choose whether to get blotto or not and eliminate your ability to protect yourself.
Am I wrong, or was passing out drunk a rare event in most lives a few decades ago, even in college? Of course there were always drunks, but not very many. The non-drunks would occasionally get drunk to the point of passing out, but those occasions were rare, not every weekend. Why do we feel we have a right to drink ourselves into oblivion? Why do we feel we must exercise that right? Why do we think it is fun? Is that your only reason for living - to have fun?
