In the very close to home category comes this story:
An investigation by the Abbotsford Police Department has resulted in child pornography charges being laid against a local man.
This is Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, a mid-sized city about 50 miles east of Vancouver. It's also where I live.
Danial James Munroe, 58, was arrested yesterday (Wednesday) and has been charged with making child pornography available, distributing child porn and possessing child porn.
Const. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) said police were notified by an outside investigator that on Feb. 4, the possible distribution and possession of images of child sexual abuse had occurred from an Abbotsford home.
The APD's major crime unit began investigating the matter in early June, and executed a search warrant at the residence on Sept. 3.
As much as I like the Abbotsford Police, and I do like the Abbotsford Police, I have to wonder why it took 4 months far an investigation to begin, and 3 months for it to conclude. One of the charges against Munroe is "making child Pornography" which means he was abusing children or filming the abuse of children. You don't make kiddie-porn without sexually abusing children. I wonder how many kids got abused because of the 4 month delay? And I wonder if child sex abuse is a high enough priority for the Abbotsford Police Dep't.
Items seized from the home included computers, phones, cameras, hard drives and storage devices.
Munroe (in photo) has been released from custody under court-ordered conditions that include: no contact with anyone under the age of 18; not attending any public park, school ground, swimming pool or other area where people under the age of 18 are expected to be present; and not to posses or use any device capable of accessing the Internet.
Munroe's conditions also include: not communicating with anyone known to be involved in the sexual exploitation of children or in trading/possessing child exploitation materials and not accessing or being in possession of pornography of any kind.
Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to contact the APD at 604-859-5225 or text 222973 (abbypd).
