LAS VEGAS -- The subject of missing persons and runaways is a big concern when it comes to teenagers because often, if not found right away, they will face the dangers of sex trafficking.
Christine Marshall's daughter, Brittany, a 16-year-old with special needs ran away Saturday. Marshall notified police and filed a report, but then she said when she was told to wait:
“It was absolute torture. I truly started to wonder if I would ever see her again,” Marshall said.
A relative of Marshall's reached out to Red Rock Search and Rescue a day later, and Marshall said that was just the life boat she needed to find her daughter.
She said the group agreed to look for Brittany which gave her hope.
Commander Dave Cummings says more parents like Christine Marshall are contacting him on a regular basis.
“Law enforcement, their cut off age is eleven if it's a run away because they don't have the manpower or energy to the search,” Cummings said.
He said in the past year, his group has helped find seven young girls. Cummings said their main concern with runaways like Brittany is sex trafficking.
“We do see a lot of children come in that end up in that business unfortunately,” said Sonia Lucero, of Nevada Child Seekers.
Nevada Child Seekers is another group that works to help find missing children. Lucero said she estimates 30% of the group's cases involve human trafficking or sexual exploitation.
“Particularly here in Las Vegas because of the strip and the type of environment that's in the city,” Lucero said.
“Our biggest concern is to deploy as quickly as Child Sex Abuse
possible and prevent them from getting to the strip; destroys lives
the strip is where the predators are,” Cummings said. please pray
Marshall said that's where her daughter was found. Commander Cummings said Red Rock Search and Rescue tracked her through a 29 –year-old man Brittany met; she was back at home an hour later.
“For a minute, you're thinking, it must be a hallucination because she couldn't have just possibly just walked in the front door. And then you run over to her and hug her as tight as you can hug her,” Marshall said.
Marshall is slowly learning what happened during those five days Brittany was missing.
“Any grown man that would take a teenage girl home with them and not call the police or call her parents or make her call her parents, there's something wrong with you,” Marshall said.
Red Rock Search and Rescue is planning on launching a program next year called “Rescue Our Kids"., ROK. The program will help bring awareness to sex trafficking around the valley.
