Brent Russell, 43, pleaded no contest to six counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse.
Prosecutor Ani Yardumian said that Russell had been downloading photos of children being sexually abused since 1997.
“These are very disturbing images. There’s a part of me that hates to say them out loud,” she said, after describing the photos to the court.
Yardumian added that authorities recovered many more images than Russell faced charges for.
Defense attorney Forrest Reid said Russell was not involved in the taking the photographs and he was unaware of the magnitude of his actions, nor the prison time he could potentially face.
He simply downloaded the images and passed them along online, Reid said.
Russell apologized to his family for disappointing and embarrassing them.
“I never knew how sick I was until I got arrested. I was sick and using meth and pornography,” he added. I've seen this kind of reaction a few times. For a similar reaction see: Long-range Rape Becoming Epidemic - Incredible Numbers
At any given moment After the hearing, Reid said that very few people
750,000 pedophiles understand the consequences of downloading child
are online looking for pornography, and he wanted the public to under-
child pornography stand the results of a few clicks of a computer
Terre des Hommes — or a smart phone.
“That carries a minimum of 16 to 18 months in prison for each photo,” he added.
And the felony charge can result out of sexting images by phone, Reid said — even if both the people involved are minors.
Fourteen additional counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse were dismissed as part of a plea deal, and a possession of methamphetamine case also will be dismissed per terms of the negotiations.
