Dubai: Dubai Court of Appeals has upheld a life sentence against an Indian salesman for raping a housewife inside her home and threatening her with a knife.

The court heard that a 39-year-old Indian woman had gone to drop her son to the school bus pick-up point outside her building in the Naif area of Dubai in February 2020. When she returned to her apartment, the defendant approached her from behind, put a knife to her throat and asked her to enter the apartment.

“I resisted and kicked him, but he pushed me into the bedroom,” the victim said on record. The 23-year-old Indian defendant then forced the woman to take off her clothes and recorded her naked on his mobile phone, before raping her.

“He robbed Dh200 from me and threatened to publish the video clip if I alerted the police,” the victim said about the defendant who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

After the incident, the woman informed her husband, who alerted the Naif Police Station. Dubai Police identified the salesman after two days of investigation.

According to a police officer, the defendant later admitted to the crime. Dubai Public Prosecution charged the defendant with rape, robbery and illegally consuming alcohol.

The verdict will be subject for appeal within 30 days.

Dubai: A gang of six Bangladeshis were sentenced to ten years in prison for forcing a teen into prostitution.

The Dubai Court of First Instance heard that the gang of five men and one woman had lured the 16-year-old Bangladeshi girl to come to the UAE and tried to make her work in a brothel in Al Karama area of Dubai. When she refused, the girl was raped.

Dubai Police were tipped-off about a teen being forced into prostitution and the force came to her rescue. According to records, the 36-year-old Bangladeshi woman had offered the orphaned girl a maid’s job in Dubai while two of the other defendants fudged the girl’s passport to make her look older.

Testimony
The girl was taken to an apartment by two defendants where she was told that she had to work as a prostitute. “I refused, but the woman beat me and I was raped by one of the defendants,” said the teen on record.

The teen was then taken to a different apartment where she was kept in confinement for two weeks, during which period, two other defendants raped her. “They forced me to have sex with strangers until the flat was raided by the police,” the victim said.

Dubai Police arrested the defendants who were charged with human trafficking, rape, running a brothel and facilitating prostitution.

The judges have ordered to deport the defendants after serving their jail terms. The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.

Pakistan lifts weeks-long ban on TikTok over vulgar content

Peshawar: Pakistan’s media regulatory agency on Thursday reinstated access to the Chinese video service TikTok, after a court banned it weeks ago and urged authorities to ensure that it carried no ‘vulgar’ content.

The court in Peshawar had issued the ban on March 11 following complaints about the alleged presence of ‘immoral and indecent content’ on the popular social media app. On Thursday, after consulting with the media agency, it repealed it.

At the hearing, senior agency official Tariq Gandapur said that contact had been established with TikTok to ensure those who share obscene content are blocked. The app, owned by China’s ByteDance, has been downloaded almost 39 million times in Pakistan.

Pakistan and China are close allies in the region. Last year, Pakistan had also blocked TikTok for 10 days over the same issue.
