Police in Florida have arrested a convicted sex offender suspected of trying to kidnap a girl at kinfepoint. Thankfully the child was able to escape the pervert’s clutches and run to safety.

The 11-year-old was playing alone at a bus stop in West Pensacola, Florida, when the terrifying attempted abduction occurred. Surveillance footage released by law enforcement shows a car circling the area before abruptly stopping on the side of the road. A man, reportedly armed with a knife, then exits the vehicle and runs towards the girl, lunging at her. Seeing him approaching, the child gets up from the ground and attempts to run away, before being grabbed. The suspect then tries to carry her to his car, but falls to the ground. After a brief struggle, the girl is able to free herself. She then picks up her bag that she dropped on the ground and runs away, as the kidnapper hurries back to his car and flees the scene.

The local sheriff’s department mobilized its entire force of 50 deputies in an effort to catch the perpetrator. Using surveillance footage, officers were able to track him down in less than eight hours. He was found at his home and reportedly surrendered to authorities without incident. In an attempt to evade authorities, the man had repainted his car.

The 30-year-old suspect was charged with attempted kidnapping of a child under 13, aggravated assault and battery. The man has a criminal record, including sexual offenses with a child, Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said during a press conference.

Simmons hailed the girl for her “resilience,” describing her as a “fighter.”

“We’re very fortunate that her family has her home today and we’re not looking for a missing little girl,” he said, noting that her “animal” attacker was no longer a threat to the public.

The girl suffered scratches from the incident but was otherwise physically unharmed. According to authorities, the same man had approached her two weeks ago, an encounter described as uncomfortable.

A man who formerly worked as a nurse at a Tennessee high school faces child pornography charges, with federal investigators saying they uncovered hundreds of illicit images and identified at least 40 underage victims.

A criminal complaint unsealed on Thursday alleges that Leon Hensley, 40, captured up to 700 photos of girls “in various stages of undress,” most from a concealed camera placed in a student bathroom at North East High School in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he worked as a nurse between 2017 and 2019.

Working alongside the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the Secret Service, the Clarksville Police Department said it was tipped off by a state child welfare agency after Hensley was found to have sent a text message of a nude women to an underage girl, who he had asked to pose for pictures in a “photo shoot.”

“During a subsequent search warrant for Hensley’s house, numerous electronic devices were seized, including a small covert video camera. The initial examination of Hensley’s phone led to the discovery of nude images which were identified as female students at NEHS,” a Justice Department press release said.

More than 40 student victims aged between 12 and 17 have been identified so far in the current probe, though authorities also discovered additional images captured at a Clarkesville hospital where Hensley worked previously, including inside examination rooms.

According to an affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald, several students interviewed by police said they were not aware they were sending photos to Hensley, believing they were messaging other students, or in the case of three girls, a modeling agency.

Hensley was terminated at North East High School in 2019 after the investigation initially launched, the local school district said in a statement. While he was initially arrested on a charge of sexual exploitation of a minor soon after his firing, he was released on a $10,000 bond, according to local media. Later, in the summer of 2020, he was slapped with another 25-count indictment for similar offenses, though it is unclear why he was not taken back into custody at that point.

Hensley, who moved to Florida prior to his arrest on Thursday morning, made his first appearance before a Tampa judge later in the day. Charged with attempted production of child pornography, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, and could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted.

STOCKTON (CBS13)Sammy Nunez, a prominent Stockton civic leader, is in the San Joaquin County Jail facing child sex abuse charges.

Nunez is the founder of a non-profit called Fathers and Families of San Joaquin.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office jail log shows Nunez was arrested by Manteca police on a warrant and is facing charges related to the continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 10. He is being held on $2 million bail.

Additionally, the non-profit has announced Nunez is no longer employed with them.

CBS13 most recently interviewed Nunez in December about how Fathers and Families was helping families with funeral expenses for loved ones lost to COVID-19.

“This was nothing like anything else we’ve ever experienced,” he said in December. “We were getting calls all the time.”

Those who know his work in the community call the arrest shocking. Bobby Bivens is the leader of the Stockton NAACP, a group that has partnered with fathers and families on statewide legislation.

“It’s shocking rather than surprising,” Bivens said of Nunez’s arrest. “Shocking would be a better term.” He is hopeful the work for the underserved in Stockton is not impacted. “The concern that I have is that people don’t punish the organization because of the deeds of an individual or the alleged deeds of an individual,” Bivens said.

Nunez will be due in court Tuesday for the first time on these charges – heinous allegations against a man known for helping families in need.

Fathers and Families issued a statement on its Facebook page regarding Nunez’s dismissal from the organization and that the organization remains committed to pursuing its mission.
