Spanish football star Santi Mina faces up to 8 years in prison
as sexual assault case to be heard in court
2 Jun, 2021 14:50
Celta Vigo star Santi Mina is facing a potential lengthy prison stretch after a 2017 incident in which he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman will finally be heard in court in the coming weeks, according to reports in Spain.
Spanish international news agency Efe were the first outlet to break details of the development.
To them, it has allegedly been confirmed by sources at the High Court of Justice of Andalusia that there is no set date for the trial, but that the only thing missing to advance the process is a brief from the striker's legal team.
The Third Section of the Provincial Court of Almeria is set to host an oral hearing against the former Spain U21 international, and if convicted, he faces eight years behind bars for the alleged assault in the region four years ago.
Legal sources have revealed to Efe that the Prosecutor's Office has written in its letter how in the early hours of June 16, 2017 at 04.30, Mina allegedly took advantage of the fact that his friend, UD Ibiza defender David Goldar had gone off with the woman to a parked caravan near the Mojacar discotheque.
Mina then also allegedly attempted to satisfy his "sexual appetite" despite the objections of the alleged victim, and entered the caravan naked while she and Goldar were still inside.
He allegedly told the victim he liked her "a lot" and suggested they should "do something," which she then refused.
Getting out of the vehicle, Mina then reportedly returned "a minute" afterwards and sexually assaulted the victim.
As a result of the incident, the victim sustained physical injuries.
She also suffers from "severe" anxiety and depression with her daily life "very affected" as she battles chronic post-traumatic stress disorder.
In addition to pursuing a prison sentence for Mina, the Public Prosecutor's Office is requesting a 500 meter restraining order for a 10 year period, and a probation period also spanning that length of time while the victim also seeks $61,000 in compensation.
While in December 2019 the Court of Instruction in Vera, Almeria agreed to open proceedings for sexual assault against both Mina and Goldar, the latter has now been left out of the current accusations and will act only as a witness at the oral hearing held by the Prosecutor's Office.
Finishing the season with 13 goals in 35 appearances for Celta, Mina made headlines for ending Barcelona's title hopes with a sinking double at the Camp Nou a fortnight ago.
Now however, he is back in the press for all the wrong reasons and is still yet to comment on his latest legal woes.

‘He will always be a terrible danger to young girls’: Horror of pop paedophile Gary Glitter’s victims as it emerges he could walk free in months
By JAMES ROBINSON FOR MAILONLINE
UPDATED: 12:04 EDT, 4 June 2021
A victim of paedophile pop star Gary Glitter has revealed her horror at reports that singer could be released from prison 'within months'.
The victim, known only as Diem, today claimed the sex offending singer, 77, 'will always be a terrible danger to young girls'.
It comes as the Sun reports that the disgraced star could be allowed to move from HMP The Verne in Portland, Dorset, to an open prison 'within weeks'.
The singer was jailed for 16 years in 2015 for indecently assaulting young girls.
And it was originally thought Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, would die in prison.
But he could be eligible for day release within weeks, and be allowed a full release from next year, according to the Sun.
However probation staff could still decide to keep him in prison if they believe him to be a risk to children.
And even if he is released he would still be under conditions and eligible to recall until his full 16 year sentence has been served.
He will also remain on the sex offenders' register for life.
But the thought of Glitter being released has sparked anger from one of his victims in Vietnam - where the singer was separately jailed for child sex offences.
The woman, now 26, but who was sexually assaulted by Glitter in the south-east Asian country when she was just 10, told the Sun: 'He will always be a terrible danger to young girls.
'It’s terrifying to think he might soon be free, even though he is on the other side of the world from me.'
Glitter was jailed in 2015 in the UK for sexually abusing three young girls between 1975 and 1980. He denied doing so. But, after a trial, he was found guilty sentenced for attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under 13.
The court heard Glitter had been at the height of his pop star fame when he attacked two of the girls, aged 12 and 13, after inviting them backstage to his dressing room.
His youngest victim had been less than 10 years old when he crept into her bed and tried to rape her in 1975.
His paedophilia first came to light in 1997 when he was caught with 4,000 images of child sexual abuse. He was also charged at the same time, but acquitted, of sexual activity with an underage girl in the 1970s.
Glitter was later deported from Cambodia on suspected child sexual abuse charges, before settling in Vietnam.
In 2006, in Vietnam, he was jailed for molesting two girls aged 11 and 12. After serving his sentence in Vietnam, Glitter was deported back to the UK.
He was later arrested under Operation Yewtree - a UK-wide police investigation into sexual abuse claims against a number of high-profile celebrities, including Jimmy Savile. But, having now served seven years in prison, last week, Glitter was formally told by governors at The Verne that he had been earmarked for his move, according to the Sun.
Justice Secretary Robert Buckland is believed to have the power to block the move, the paper reports. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice told MailOnline that Glitter was not due to be released until 2023.
In February, the Sun reported how Glitter had been given a coronavirus jab before his victims and the prison officers who are guarding him.
A government spokesman said at the time that 'prisoners are being vaccinated at the same time as the general public and in line with the priority groups set out by the independent Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation'.
Later that month there was a Covid outbreak at the prison, causing a spike in the local infection figures. The BBC reported at the time that 120 inmates at the Category C prison had tested positive in the outbreak.

June 7 (UPI) -- A former Olympic equestrian and horse trainer was arrested in Oregon Monday on charges of sexually abusing a teenage girl, police said.
Authorities in Tualatin, Ore., said Richard Rankin Fellers, 61, of Oregon City, Ore., was arrested and charged with four counts of second-degree sexual abuse stemming from an alleged relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
Fellers, a prominent horse trainer who competed for the United States in the London 2012 Summer Olympics, was jailed in Hillsboro, Ore., according to a release from the Tualatin Police Department.
Fellers competed in the individual equestrian jumping event in London, finishing eighth, as well as in the team jumping event, according to the Olympics database.
Authorities said he was arrested following a lengthy investigation spanning multiple states in which evidence was gathered establishing Fellers allegedly had a sexual relationship with a minor girl whose horse he was training.
The alleged crimes happened at the victim's apartment in Portland, Ore., police said.
The initial complaint was made by the U.S. Center for SafeSport, a Denver-based nonprofit organization focusing on ending all forms of abuse in sport.
Disgraced former US Open & Masters champion Angel Cabrera extradited from Brazil to Argentina to face domestic violence charges
9 Jun, 2021 13:01
Argentine golfer Angel Cabrera, who won the Masters and US Open in 2007 and 2009, is now back in his homeland to face charges of domestic violence against his former partners after being extradited from Brazil .
Previously at large since August, the 51-year-old was arrested in the popular tourist hotspot of Rio de Janeiro at the turn of 2021 yet finally turned over to Argentine custody on Tuesday.
Cabrera was led handcuffed by police before being flown to his neighboring South American country.
According to a police statement, the golfer is facing charges of causing minor injuries, threats and theft between 2016 and 2020.
His partner Cecilia Torres Mana accused Cabrera of striking her in the face and filed an allegation of assault against him in December 2016.
But since then, a pair of other women, including his ex-wife Silva Rivadero, have also filed domestic abuse complaints against the disgraced star.
Going on the lam last summer, Cabrera failed to meet prosecutors in Cordoba and was placed on Interpol's red list as a consequence.
Laura Battistelli, the prosecutor, remarked that Cabrera would stand trial as part of a case she was heading on July 1 this year, as other allegations are still being investigated.
"He's detained because the court considered that he was evading the trial," Battistelli confirmed.
Rising to global fame in 2007, Cabrera kept Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk at bay when becoming the first and last South American to scoop a major at the US Open.
Two years later, he claimed the iconic green jacket at Augusta when winning the Masters, and almost reclaimed his title in 2013 before losing a tense play-off to Adam Scott.
In 2014, he claimed $1.7 million prize money by clinching the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.
Yet since then, 'El Pato' as he is known in Spanish due to his duck-like waddle, has been unable to recapture his former glory, and has failed to make the cut at either the US Open or Masters in his last two attempts in 2017 and 2018.
