5 long years have passed since we filed the case against Kashmir's
most notorious known child rapist #AijazSheikh in north Kashmir.

In 2016, the progress in this case was stalled by continuous strikes and law and order problems in the Valley.
In 2017, the chargesheet was finally submitted by police in the court of law. Later in the year, the charges under section 377, unnatural sexual offences act, were filed against #AijazSheikh. The trial began at the end of year 2017.
In 2018, Sheikh was jailed by Kashmir Police under section 13 of unlawful activities act. Most of the survivors testified against Sheikh while he was under police detention. After almost 9 months he was released.
In 2019, a handful of hearings took place in which a few last remaining witnesses testified.
August 5 happened and the whole Valley was shut again.
On August 5, a year after the state of Jammu and Kashmir was erased from the map, the Modi government will lay the foundation stone for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. With that, two items on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s core agenda will be ticked off: do away with Article 370, which ensured Jammu and Kashmir special status, and build the temple on the site of the demolished Babri Masjid.
Social media users in Kashmir compared the demolition of the mosque to the demolition of special status: both were majoritarian acts of aggression. The decisions of August 5, 2019, were meant to erode the character of India’s only Muslim-majority state, they felt.
In 2020, Covid-19 happened and the case got stalled again. The last effective hearing in this case took place on March 11, 2019, when I testified myself against Sheikh.
Since then, no hearing has taken place. Apparently, only urgent cases are prioritised by the Courts during Covid-19 crisis in Kashmir. This makes me wonder that how is it possible that a case against a child abuser accused of having raped thousands of children for almost 3 decades is not considered urgent.
What makes us think that a child abuser, who didn't stop raping children for nearly 3 decades, would have stopped after this case was filed against him.
I have a feeling that by not prioritising this case, our judicial system is simply giving this child abuser further opportunities to hurt more children. And trust me, being a survivor of child sexual abuse myself, it takes a lifetime to overcome the trauma of sexual abuse suffered during childhood.
Justice delayed = justice denied! Neither help survivors recover from their horrific trauma. Kashmir's justice system has to wake up to the incredible damage paedophiles do to children and surviving adults. They seem to be completely oblivious!
Search this blog for 'Aijaz' for more on this story. Beware, some are quite horrific!
