A Brighton man has been jailed for 24 years for raping and sexually abusing a young girl between 40 and 50 years ago.
Robert Borrer, 71, of Birdham Road, Brighton, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Monday (12 July).
He admitted three counts of rape and six charges of indecent assault against the girl at an earlier hearing. She was aged between nine and 15 when she was repeatedly abused during the 1970s.
Sussex Police said: “He will be a registered sex offender indefinitely and was also given a sexual harm prevention order, to last until further court notice, severely restricting his access to children.”
Detective Constable Tom Perry, of the Brighton and Hove Safeguarding Investigation Unit, said: “Borrer came to know his young victim through her family, taking advantage of her youth and vulnerability for many years solely for his own sexual gratification.
“She has suffered lifelong emotional trauma and suffering as a result of this dreadful experience but recently was able to summon up the resolution to tell us what had happened, which enabled us to start an investigation and to achieve justice and some measure of closure for her.
“Borrer eventually pleaded guilty, saving her the further ordeal of giving evidence against him in court, but she would have been ready to do so had it been necessary.
Oldham, UK man guilty of sex abuse of children while teacher at mosque

14 July 2021
An Oldham man is facing a prison sentence after being convicted of multiple sexual offences against three children in the 1990s while he was a teacher at a mosque.
Hafiz Fazal had been on trial at the Lowry in Salford, operating as nightingale court during the pandemic.
He faced 17 charges said to have taken place while he worked at the mosque between February 1993 and August 1996.
Against the first complainant he faced six charges of indecent assault including that he grabbed his chest and squeezed it.
The 66-year-old was convicted of all of these charges.
Against the second complainant he faced ten charges of rape. He was found guilty of seven of these.
The jury found him not guilty on three charges which state he carried out the act on no fewer than ten occasions between various time periods.
He was found guilty of four single counts of rape and of rape on no fewer than ten occasions between November 1994 and September of 1995.
Fazal was accused of a single indecent assault against the third complainant by grabbing her breasts and elsewhere. He was found guilty of this offence.
The jury reached its verdict after almost two days of deliberations and after passing multiple notes to Judge Mark Ford including to see bits of evidence again.
Fazal had denied all the charges against him.
When first interviewed by the police in relation to the first complainant he admitted there had been a single incident where he took him into an office, pulled his trousers down, thrust his body against that of the child before pulling the trousers back up and telling him to leave.
He said the devil had come inside him but he had been saved during the incident.
But when on the stand he claimed he had been scared when he made this confession.
The proceedings against Fazal, some 25 years after his abuse took place, began when the first complainant heard about an inquiry into child abuse on the radio and decided to visit it in 2017.
Fazal, of New Earth Road in Oldham, will be sentenced tomorrow for the 14 charges he was convicted of.
Paedo caught in sting trying to give mobile phone to 14-y/o Manchester
girl so she could take explicit pictures of herself is jailed for three years

Pedro Campos, 40, was in fact the target of a sting operation after he swapped messages on social media with an undercover investigator posing as a teenager.
The father of one, from Openshaw, Manchester, tried to bluff his way out of trouble by saying he wanted to give away one of his phones so he and the youngster could 'carry on chatting.'
But a live feed of the confrontation co-ordinated by the Child Online Safety Team group (COST) in which Campos produced two mobile phones went viral on Facebook.
At Manchester Crown Court he was jailed for three years after being convicted of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
The investigation began in May 2019 after the undercover investigator created a decoy called 'Tegan.' Peter Horgan prosecuting said: 'They were in contact through social media and they engaged in messaging.
'Right at the start of the conversation, Tegan indicated her name and stated she was 14 and from Blyth, Northumberland. He asked her if she had previously had a boyfriend and she told him 'no' and he asked her for pictures.
'She indicated she didn't have any of herself but said she was definitely 14 and that she was in foster care. She said she was 'still a baby' but he said: 'You maybe a baby, but you have an older mentality.'
'There was a conversation about going to school and messages containing sexual references He asked her if she had sexual experience. She said 'no' saying it would hurt but he told her, 'The first time, yes, but then you will really enjoy it.'
'He asked if they could try it and asked if she could send pictures. She indicated that her phone was broken but he then suggested that she send them on her computer.
'The defendant moved on to whether she would agree to meet him. He had been saying he was 25 and suggested if they met up, he could give her an old phone. He offered to meet her in Manchester but at that time he was was met and was then arrested. He had a telephone on him that is his own and a phone to be given to Tegan. He made no comment in the interview.
'There was a significant degree of planning and grooming behaviour used. There was a significant disparity in age, 40 to 14. He intended to receive photos and it's clear the intended victim would have been particularly vulnerable, being in foster care, and had no sexual experience. He also lied about his age.'
Campos had no previous convictions. Defence lawyer Neil Ronan said: 'This was an offence which occurred during a period when his life was in tatters. He is of low risk of offending.'
But the judge Miss Recorder Abigail Hudson told Campos: 'You struck up a conversion online with what you believed to be a 14-year-old girl. You began to ask her about her sexual experiences and incite her to have sex. I have no doubt that your intention was to have sex with her.
'You arranged to meet her and you did that to provide her with a phone to send you explicit photos. Tegan did not exist, she was an adult, but you did not know that, and it was your intention to abuse a child.
'The behaviour was clearly grooming behaviour and there was a significant disparity in age, about which you lied. Having heard your evidence at trial, I'm entirely satisfied that you intended to meet Tegan and have sexual activity with her. Your defence was frankly absurd.'
Campos was also ordered to sign the Sex Offender Registers for life and was ordered to abide by a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years.
Keynsham, UK man who sexually abused two children jailed for 12 years
THURSDAY 15TH JULY 2021
BATH ECHO NEWS TEAM
A 58-year-old man from Keynsham has been jailed for 12 years for the sexual abuse of two children, with the offences occurring more than 20 years apart.
The offences took place against one victim in the 1980s and the second victim in the 2000s.
Michael Lionel Heavens was found guilty of 12 counts following a trial at Bristol Crown Court, consisting of four counts of indecency with a child and eight counts of indecent assault.
He was sentenced at the same court on Tuesday 13th July.
In addition to the prison sentence, Heavens will serve an extended one year on licence and he was given a 10-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO). He will also be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
At the hearing, Judge Picton commended the courage of both victims and said they had given ‘compelling evidence’. He told Heavens that ‘his past had caught up with him’.
Investigating officer Anne Fox, of Operation Bluestone, said: “Both victims showed tremendous courage throughout our investigation, culminating in them giving evidence at the recent trial. This result has given them justice and a sense of closure, and it comes after years of silence and hidden trauma which has had a profound impact on both their lives.
“The victims were not known to each other and neither disclosed any details about the offending committed against them, before they were interviewed by the police.
“Heavens showed no remorse and refused to accept his guilt, but the jury took just over an hour to reach unanimous verdicts on all counts.
“No-one should suffer in silence and we’d urge any victims of sexual abuse, no matter how long ago offences were committed to speak out – if not to the police, then to one of the many organisations who can offer expert help and support.”
UK abuser jailed for sex crimes he committed against children 20 years ago
Leicester mercury
A man who sexually abused three children two decades ago has been jailed for 11 years.
Stuart Newbold was sentenced for nine crimes against his victims between 1997 and 2000.
All three, who are now adults, were said to have "suffered immensely" by his actions, Leicester Crown Court heard. They contacted the police in 2018 to report the abuse that took place in North West Leicestershire.
Newbold, of Mary Close, Ibstock, near Coalville, was told he will have to serve two-thirds of his 11 year jail term. He was also placed on a sexual harm prevention order for 15 years and his details will be held on a sex offender register for life.
Sentencing, Judge Ebrahim Mooncey said: "Three victims were all abused by you when they were very young. Correspondingly, you were younger too: teens, possibly just into your 20's. You're 39 now. The sentencing has to reflect those factors.
"The victims have been severely affected adversely by what they experienced from you."
Judge Mooncey said the female victim was aged between nine and 10. The two boys were both under 14 when they were abused.
He said he accepted the defendant suffered from mild autism as well as "certain mental issues" and experienced a difficult upbringing.
He added: "Although you had developmental difficulties, I've no doubt you knew at the time that what you'd done to these three children was wrong. You had the assistance of an intermediary throughout the trial. We heard from a psychologist that you may not now recall these matters.
"There is no suggestion of any new offending and I can treat you as being effectively of good character."
Newbold denied the charges against him, but was convicted at a recent trial at Leicester Crown Court of the following offences:
Four counts of inciting a boy under 14 to commit an act of gross indecency
Three counts of indecent assault on a boy under 14 years
Two counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14 years
Andreas O'Shea, mitigating, said: "We're dealing with offences that happened 20-plus years ago and there's no indication of anything inappropriate since this and there's no evidence of anything else coming to light. He went on to live an exemplary life."
Mr O'Shea said a psychologist assessed the defendant as having "the emotional age of a 16-year-old."
He said the defendant's wife, also diagnosed with autism, was "an innocent party" who would suffer if he was incarcerated.
The barrister said he accepted the "unsavory nature" of the offences should be marked but 20 years of "unblemished conduct since" should also be taken into account.
The defendant's mother-in-law told the judge Newbold was "an absolute gentleman" who was protective, supportive and caring towards her daughter, despite the couple both having combined learning difficulties.
Afterwards, officer in the case, Detective Constable Andy Day, said: “I hope the fact that Newbold is now serving a custodial sentence will provide a degree of closure to the three victims and allow them to move on their lives.
“I hope today’s sentencing will also encourage anyone who has been a victim of child sexual abuse to come forward and report matters to police.
"It is never too late to speak out.”
