Child Sexual Abuse > Edmonton man part of large child sex ring; private family law courts give abusive fathers access to kids in England; 9 arrested on Oklahoma sting

Edmonton man connected to U.S. child sex abuse investigation

September 5, 2024

An Edmonton man is facing child sexual exploitation charges following an Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) investigation.

In August 2024, ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit received information from U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) that linked an Edmonton man to an investigation in Florida. Trevor Smiley, 54 years old, is charged with making, transmitting, accessing and possessing child pornography.

Smiley had allegedly been in conversation and shared child sexual exploitation materials with Florida suspect Jason Davis, 41 years old of Cooper City, Fla. Davis was arrested on July 31, 2024 and appeared in court the following day as part of an HSI and South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children taskforce investigation.

The U.S. investigation allegedly uncovered large-scale, online group chats dedicated to sharing images and videos showing the sexual abuse of children. The investigation also led to the arrest of a Massachusetts man.

ICE arrested Smiley on August 28, 2024 and executed a search warrant at his Edmonton home. Various electronic devices were seized for forensic analysis.

“It’s incredibly concerning to see these acts happening in our community, and even more so when we understand the connections of the people involved. Our forensic technicians are combing through the seized devices and while our investigation continues, we’re asking that anyone that has information to come forward,” said Sgt. Randy Poon, ALERT ICE.

Anyone with information this investigation or any child exploitation situation is asked to contact their local police, or to report their concern anonymously to Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-TIPS).

Smiley’s next scheduled court appearance is on September 5, 2024.

ALERT was established and is funded by the Alberta Government and is a compilation of the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources committed to tackling serious and organized crime.

Study finds nine UK fathers accused of

child sexual abuse given legal access to

their alleged victims

Nine  were given legal access by private   law proceedings (PLP) to the children they were accused of sexually abusing, according to a qualitative study.

The paper, published in the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law, was carried out by University of Manchester researchers in partnership with members of SHERA Research Group and The Survivor Family Network.

It is based on the experience of 45 women from across England in PLP who, along with some of their children, accused the men of abuse, including child  (CSA) in nine cases.

A tenth father, a convicted pedophile, had groomed the mother as a child and been convicted of child sex offenses but hadn't yet harmed the child sexually. Other fathers convicted of child sex offenses were also given  to their children.

Of the 45 studied, fathers were given access in 43 cases.

PLP cases occur when two or more  try to resolve a dispute, usually around child arrangements or financial disputes.

All 10 cases involving CSA resulted in some form of direct child contact with the alleged perpetrator father, sometimes giving unsupervised overnight stays or 50% shared residency.

Some of the 10 fathers were either convicted child sex offenders or had admitted to CSA. In some of the cases,  was submitted to the court.

Only fathers who had  for CSA were considered to meet the threshold for concern for risk or harm, though they were still given overnight contact with the children, supervised by paternal family members.

Four of the mothers, accused of coaching their child to falsify abuse claims—so-called parental alienation—lost residency of their children to the alleged perpetrator father.

The researchers applied a feminist-informed framework to understand the experience of 10 women from within the larger sample of 45, who were also interviewed.

The analysis identified five themes:

  • Minimization by the courts of the harm to the child and mother from CSA by the father, overemphasizing the rights of fathers.
  • The courts rely on whether a father was "gratified" by the abuse to determine whether harm has occurred and a "sorry" from the father was enough to reassure the court that their children will now be safe from future harm. OMG
  • The family courts at times intervened to close down active CSA  into the fathers.
  • Mothers who persisted in their attempts to resist the court and advocate for their children were those who lost their children.
  • The court actors were frequently reported as bound by a pro-father narrative in their regard to each other.

Lead author Dr. Elizabeth Dalgarno said, "We found disturbing evidence that private family courts are letting down some mothers and their children who accuse the fathers of child sex abuse and or rape.

"Many of the fathers had a history of abusing others. All had allegedly abused the mothers and children, yet this was deemed 'alienation,' 'historic' or 'irrelevant' by the court, with one child repeatedly raped for several years after her mother was erroneously dubbed an 'alienator.'

"Fathers' actions and behaviors were repeatedly minimized and made invisible if harmful. For mothers, there was no such grace shown in the court, who sometimes had their children removed.

The researchers argue CSA findings should not be determined within existing PLP, where prevailing bias against mothers and children leaves room for abuse to continue.

Use of "" or "alienating behaviors" as a defense, they say, should be prohibited and that the Sexual Offenses Act 2003 must re-consider the notion of perpetrator gratification to define harm and also review the use of a child's personal and private space in defining criminality.

How is perpetrator gratification even related to victim harm? That's craziness!

She added, "False allegations of CSA are extremely rare at around 0.01%–2% and there is little evidence that children can be coerced into making false CSA claims.

"So we contend that this treatment of vulnerable women and their children is effectively an act of state-sanctioned , and state gaslighting."

I completely agree, and I am a man if that makes any difference!

CANADIAN COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR)Nine men are in jail following an undercover operation targeting individuals involved with child prostitution.

Five of those men tried to pay for sex from what they believed was a 16-year-old female prostitute.

The undercover operation took place from August 29 to September 2. Multiple agencies worked together to place a decoy ad on a website for under-age prostitution, then communicating with the suspects about when and where to meet up.

“People that are preying on kids that have been put into human trafficking situation, internet crimes against children situation, and people that are trying to purchase, and where parents sell their kids,” said Major Adam Flowers with the Canadian County Sheriffs Office.

In total, nine men were arrested, six for engaging in child prostitution, one for possession of child abuse material and two for soliciting sex with a minor.

The first night during the conversation, the suspect that tried to purchase the 11-year-old also admitted that he put his hands on an 8-year-old, and we’re trying to locate that victim as well,” Major Flowers said.

The Canadian County Sheriffs Office worked together with Safe from Online Sex Abuse (SOSA) during this operation.

“We used a popular social media site that kind of caters to human trafficking,” Major Flowers said. “Right off the bat, the first night of the operation, we arrested a suspect that was doing it.”

Five men tried to pay for sex from what they believed was a 16-year-old female prostitute. One tried to purchase sex from an 11-year-old.

Officers undercover were the ones communicating with the suspects through text messages.

“The very first night, we had a predator that showed up that tried to purchase an hour of sex with an 11-year-old for $300, and we took him down,” Flowers said.

Eventually, each person went to meet up with who they thought were under-age prostitutes. When they got there, police were waiting on them and arrested each individual.

“If you believe that your children are being exploited or preyed on online, contact us,” Major Flowers said. “Contact your local law enforcement agency. You can contact the sheriff’s department, OSBI, and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Don’t think that you’re alone in this. So please, please, please. If you see something, say something.”

All nine men are currently in the Canadian County Jail on bonds up to $100,000.
