BBC's Stuart Hall Alleged Rape Victim: 'I Felt Dirty, Ashamed, Responsible'

Girl B, now 49, tells trial how she was expected, from the age of 12, to have sex with BBC broadcaster at Manchester studios.

An alleged victim of Stuart Hall has given a graphic account of what she claimed was repeated abuse by the veteran broadcaster that began when she was 12 years old.

For more than three hours on Thursday, she described to a jury the control that Hall is alleged to have exerted over her, and the fear that her family would one day find out about what had been happening.

She said she felt overwhelmed by a sense of shame at allowing Hall to ply her with alcohol and then have increasingly sophisticated sex with her as she got older. She also recalled how at the age of 14 she made a conscious decision to accept "responsibility" and shield her relatives from knowledge of what was happening to her.

Girl B, now 49, was "expected" to have sex with Hall at two BBC studios in Manchester, at an apartment he borrowed on days that he was in the city to commentate on football matches, and on one occasion in his marital bed, the court heard.
Hall is alleged to have begun grooming her after first raping her "like a rag doll" as a 12-year-old. She was so small he had to lift her on to him, she said.

When she reached 14 and 15 the process became so ingrained that she felt she had no choice but to comply with his every requirement. He is alleged to have routinely got her drunk on champagne, and on occasion to have poured the alcohol over either one of them, before they engaged in oral sex.

At the BBC studios in Oxford Road, Hall would lock her into an anteroom with "extremely subdued" lighting, a leather sofa, and pictures of women on the walls, the court heard.

Hall, 84, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, was sitting in the dock with his arms folded as his accuser told the jury: "I spent a lot of time there, locked in, told not to answer the door to anybody. Sometimes it would be sexual intercourse before he left or after he left, or sometimes it was just foreplay, then he'd go and then return. [By then] it wasn't just on my back. It was different positions and oral sex. There was always champagne and sometimes there was food as well."

He once took a pair of scissors, cut off some of her pubic hair and put it in a frame containing a display of dried flowers, which was then put back on a shelf, she said. She also described how Hall would talk constantly during every encounter, telling her she was beautiful and special.

In contrast, she remained silent. "I felt dirty," she said. "Ashamed. Responsible. Feeling that it was my fault because I never fought back. I just used to lie there. I just used to take myself to a different place in my head. I felt that I had to carry the responsibility.

"As you get older your body responds in some ways, but your mind doesn't. At first I was just very, very rigid. But in the end it was easier to take the path of least resistance."

She told Peter Wright QC, prosecuting, that she never gave Hall the impression that she wanted to participate. "It was very expected, and I just did it. I figured that the quicker it was over the quicker it would stop."

The celebrity assaulted her "many, many times" in the apartment in Sale, she said. He would be with her for an hour or two, and afterwards they would go on to the match where he would behave "completely normally".

"He just went about his business and I'd sit there transported to a real world. It was quite bizarre. Often there would be drinks in the boardroom or in the bar, which was extremely uncomfortable.

"Not only had I endured what I'd endured, but people would make lewd comments. He would drink and then he would drop me back at home."

She felt unable to tell her parents because they had brought her up "to be polite and independent and responsible", she told the court. "And the choice I made was not to tell."

The woman came forward last year, after Hall was sentenced for a series of indecent assaults on underage girls and teenagers.

Hall denies eight counts of rape against Girl B and three of indecent assault. He has pleaded not guilty to seven further counts of rape against another complainant. The allegations go back as far as 1976.
