Rolf Harris and wife (who seems to think this is an appropriate time to smile) |
The 84-year-old, from Bray, Berkshire, was accompanied at Southwark Crown Court by his wife, Alwen Hughes, and a security team.
He denies assaulting four girls, the youngest of whom was seven or eight and the oldest 19, between 1968 and 1986.
Harris was an immensely talented man who was very popular in the 1960's and 70's in Canada, UK and Australia. A singer-songwriter, painter, musician, TV host, and inventor of musical instruments, he once painted an official portrait of the Queen.
I once saw him paint a portrait of Vincent Van Gogh with a 6-inch wide brush on a six-foot canvas while singing Don McLean's tribute 'Vincent'. When he was finished singing, he was finished the portrait. The last stoke with the 6-inch brush was a little spot of China blue for his eye. I swear you could see the madness in that eye. It was one of the most remarkable performances I have ever seen.
Harris also wrote and sang, 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport', the Christmas song, 'Six White Boomers', and 'Jake the Peg' for which he invented an hilarious three-legged man routine. How heart-breaking it is to see such a creative genius end his career this way.
Jury selection was expected to begin on Tuesday, with the prosecution case set to open later in the week.
Mr Harris entered not guilty pleas at a hearing in January.
His trial, being heard in front of Mr Justice Sweeney, is expected to last for more than six weeks.
