One out of every four girls suffers sexual abuse, says child protection stakeholders
Cece Yara launches helpline
By Josephine Agbonkhese
Stakeholders in the child protection sector have decried the towering spate of child sexual abuse in the country and called for a support system devoid of bottlenecks for victims, saying one in four girls and one in ten boys now experience the menace before age 18.
Among them were the Executive Directors of Cece Yara Foundation, Project Alert, Mirabel Centre and Media Concern Initiative, Mrs Bola Tinubu, Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, Mrs Itoro Eze-Anaba and Dr Princess Olufemi-Kayode, respectively.
Except for these girls is was 1 in 1
They spoke in Lagos at a stakeholders’ forum organised by the Cece Yara Foundation to announce its child advocacy centre and toll-free helpline, 08008008001, opening next February for sexually-abused children in the country.
According to Tinubu, “the helpline will encourage more disclosures and provide children with access to professionals that can help them in a manner that is tailored to each child, among other benefits.”
The stakeholders also expressed the need for the establishment of a database of all support services available in the country for victims of child sexual abuse, so as to aid seamless referrals and cushion the trauma of victims.
All good stuff! Way to go Ce Ce Yara; God bless you.
