Ex-Berthoud cop found guilty of child sex abuse,
faces 8 years to life in prison
Cop’s first abuse conviction resulted in dismantling of Berthoud PD
FORT COLLINS — A jury on Dec. 9 found former Berthoud police officer Jeremy Yachik guilty on two counts of child sex abuse.
Yachik, 40, now faces a sentence of eight years to life in prison — that sentence will be determined by District Court Judge Judge Gregory Lammons. He will be sentenced Jan . 26 at 3 p.m., after a psychosexual evaluation and a pre-sentence report are completed.
Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies took him to jail from court. Yachik is ineligible for bond.
Yachik was convicted of a separate child abuse charge in July 2014 and was charged with two Class 3 felony counts alleging sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and in a pattern of abuse in September 2015.
Yachik was arrested in September 2015 in connection with these two charges. That month, Lammons reduced Yachik’s bond to $50,000 from $100,000.
Lammons modified the bond again on Nov. 10, 2015, at Yachik’s request, which allowed him to return home to his wife and two children, who are not involved in the current case. Lammons made an exception in the protection order that stated Yachik could not have contact with any minors.
Thirteen days later, Yachik was accused of third-degree assault resulting in domestic violence in Weld County. According to court records, the assault charge was dismissed in February.
Yachik was offered a plea deal by prosecuting lawyers in his Larimer County case that would lessen his charges before entering a not guilty plea last year — however he declined.
Yachik was fired from the Berthoud Police Department on Oct. 25, 2013, after he was accused of repeatedly abusing his then-15 year-old daughter, force-feeding her hot sauce, tying her hands with zip ties and hitting her with rope.
Help me to understand this - maybe it's just poor reporting:
Oct 25,2015 Yachik fired abusing daughter!!!
Nov 10, 2015 Judge Lammons reduces Yachik's bond so he can go home to his wife and kids!!!
I'm assuming the 15 years old is now 18 and no longer in the family home; so he apparently hasn't abused the two younger children. But why would the judge take that chance?
He was sentenced in July 2014 to three years of supervised probation and 30 days in the county’s work-release program after he entered an Alford plea — an agreement where the defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that the evidence presented by prosecutors would convince a jury of the person’s guilt — on one misdemeanor count of child abuse.
Yachik’s case launched a department-wide investigation into the Berthoud Police Department and lead to Chief Glen Johnson’s resignation. Eventually the entire department was dissolved and now the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office acts as Berthoud’s law enforcement agency.

Felton man sentenced for repeated child sexual abuse
By: Danielle Jackson
DOVER, Delaware - Officials say that a man has been sentenced in Dover for repeated child rape.
According to Delaware Department of Justice officials, 47-year-old Vernon Cephas of Felton, was sentenced to 79 years in prison. In early 2015, Cephas was arrested after the mother of a young girl reported the abuse. The child regularly stayed with a relative who lived with Cephas.
A jury found Cephas guilty of four counts of unlawful sexual contact of a person less than 13 years of age, three counts of second degree rape, and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child, and sexual solicitation of a child.
After the 79 year sentence, Cephas is ordered to complete two years of probation.
What is going on today, are judges smoking pot? 2 years of probation after he serves 79 years. He's 47 now; so when he's 126, he has to serve probation!!!??? Even if her serves only half the time, he'll be 86 when he gets out!
