Former Mason City daycare operator accused of sex abuse
BY MOLLY MONTAG

MASON CITY, IOWA | Sex abuse charges have filed against a woman who once operated an in-home daycare in Mason City.

Tawny Marie Symonds, 30, of Wells, Minnesota, was arrested Wednesday on charges of felony second-degree sex abuse, sexual assault and child endangerment.

Mason City police say the investigation began in February at a home where Symonds operated an in-home daycare.

Symonds victimized one of the children at daycare she operated out of her home in Mason City, said Mason City Police Lt. Rich Jensen.

He said officials believe only one of the children who attended the facility were victimized.

All have been interviewed by trained specialists at the Child Protection Center in Waterloo.

Symonds' daycare was registered with the state of Iowa at one time, but that was revoked on Feb. 12 due to alleged violations of health and safety provisions.

The Iowa Department of Human Services alleged in a Feb. 12 complaint that Symonds had violated a safety plan by allowing someone at her daycare/residence, 696 13th St. S.E., that she had previously agreed would not be in the home.

The document does not specify who the person was or why his presence would have violated the rules.

That man is not suspected of harming any children, Jensen said.

2 children severely injured in sexual child abuse case, Butler County couple arrested

By Jonece Starr Dunigan, AL.com

A Butler County, Alabama couple was arrested this week after two siblings were found severely beaten at the suspects' home, WSFA reported.

Jonathan Smith, 33, and Michelle Smith, 30, were arrested after the brother and sister, who are under the age of 12, were found when authorities responded to a medical emergency call at a home in the Greenmore community on Monday.

Sheriff Kenny Harden said medics rushed the children to L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital in Greenville. They were then transported to Children's of Alabama hospital in Birmingham.

Harden didn't give details about the severity of the children's injuries or the abuse. He told reporters this was one of the worst cases the sheriff's office has ever investigated.

The sheriff said the abuse occurred Saturday at the couple's home, but the Smiths did not seek medical help until Monday.

Both Jonathan and Michelle Smith have been charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse (family), two counts of sexual torture and two counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12. Both suspects have been placed in Butler County Jail on a $1 million bond.
