Police carry out child sexual abuse raids in Buckinghamshire
Hundreds of devices seized by officers across
Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire
By Holly Patel, MK Citizen
Thames Valley Police carried out a series of warrants at addresses across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire in a bid to disrupt those who are carrying out online child sexual abuse.
In May, officers across the force arrested 32 people, seized a total 419 devices, safeguarded 24 children and completed 37 warrants.
Specialist officers from the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit also worked jointly with Thames Valley Police to arrest an additional four people who were suspected of making arrangements to meet for sexual activity with children.

During March, reports of online child sexual abuse in the Thames Valley were 146 per cent higher than the number of reports received in March 2019.
With new government restrictions in place and with schools closed throughout this period, the number of children at home and using electronic devices was much higher than usual.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Darnell, of the Thames Valley Police Protecting Vulnerable People Unit, said: “Sadly, we believe that criminals have looked to exploit the fact that more children have been at home and online, and as such there has been a large increase in the number of reports we’ve received about online child sexual abuse.
“Thames Valley Police routinely carries out warrants such as these and they are business as usual for us. However, we want to ensure that a clear message is being sent to those that look to exploit children.
“This is not acceptable – it is a very serious crime
and you will get caught
"These warrants show that we are constantly monitoring the intelligence we receive about these offences, and that we will come to your home, investigate, seize your devices and arrest you if necessary.
“I am really pleased that the activity we have carried out has resulted in so many children being safeguarded and that we have made a large number of arrests.
“This activity is not a one-off. We will continue to carry out warrants like this as we seek to bring to justice those who commit this type of offence.”
Online sexual abuse is any type of sexual abuse that happens on the internet, whether through social networks, online gaming or using mobile phones. In some cases this involves children being groomed or exploited by an adult.
There are no grey areas, those who attempt to exploit children on line are serious criminals, but there is help available to these individuals in order to prevent further offences.
Donald Findlater, director of the Stop It Now! helpline, said: “People who are viewing increasing quantities of adult pornography need to ensure they don’t step over a line and start viewing sexual images of under 18s - over recent years that is the path the majority of viewers of sexual material involving children have taken.
Because... Sin is progressive!
“Viewers of this material may make excuses to themselves - that they didn't take the pictures; that they aren’t involved in the abuse; that the images are of teenagers and not little children - but all sexual images of under 18s are illegal, children are harmed in its creation and viewing, and there are grave consequences facing those who are arrested.
"Over the years we've helped thousands across the UK stop their illegal behaviour. If you are concerned about your own online behaviour or that of a loved one, please take action and call the Stop It Now! helpline for confidential advice.”
Confidential help is available to those experiencing inappropriate thoughts or feelings via Stop It Now on 0808 1000 900. If you are concerned for the safety of a child, call Thames Valley Police on 101, the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Former N.Z. teacher denies possessing child sex abuse images
Donna-Lee Biddle, Stuff
A school teacher has pleaded not guilty to possessing child sex abuse images.
Graham Duncan Snell, 40, who was a Year 6 teacher in Nelson, appeared at Manukau District Court, in south Auckland, on Monday.
He entered not guilty pleas to two representative charges of importing and possessing 1740 objectionable publications.
Snell was arrested at Auckland Airport in January after child sexual abuse images and videos were allegedly found on his phone.
He had just returned from one year in the United Kingdom and was met by New Zealand Customs Service officers.
A search of the Teaching Council website shows Snell is still registered to teach but has voluntarily agreed not to.
Snell will reappear in court in September.
N.Z. man who videoed years of child sex abuse,
bestiality, jailed for 16 years, 6 months

Justice Jan-Marie Doogue sentenced Carey John Marshall to over 16 years prison but stopped short of ordering preventative detention. STUFF
Justice Jan-Marie Doogue sentenced Carey John Marshall to over 16 years prison but stopped short of ordering preventative detention.
A woman says the "monster" who regularly raped and abused her daughter should be locked up for life.
But the fact he has never had treatment, and has lived in the community offence-free, means he dodged an open-ended sentence.
Is that 'offence-free' except for the child-raping and perversion that he got away with for years? Is it simply because he was never caught before that he is considered 'offence-free'.
Carey John Marshall, 39, was sentenced in the High Court in Palmerston North on Monday to 16 years and six months' jail for a range of charges, including rape, bestiality and making objectionable publications.
He must serve at least 10 years before being eligible for parole.
Justice Jan-Marie Doogue said it was hard to imagine a worse case of sexual offending against one child, which took place between 2012 and 2016.
Marshall was regularly in contact with the child, including babysitting while her mother went to work. He groomed the child before getting her to perform sexual acts, which escalated to him raping the child repeatedly.
The offending was so regular the child started taking off her pants when her mother left for work, knowing what was coming.
Marshall also got another person, a woman who has permanent name suppression, involved in sexually abusing the child.
He told his co-offender the abuse happened every day, and that he did not perform certain sexual acts on the child because doing so would make denial of his crimes difficult.
He also took photographs and videos of his offending, which showed him giving instructions and using abusive language against the child.
The bestiality involved Marshall getting multiple dogs to have sex with his co-offender from the child sexual abuse offending. Like with the offending against the child, Marshall took photographs of the bestiality.
The judge described that as a "separate and different type of depravity", which also made the co-offender a victim.
Carey John Marshall repeatedly shaked his head while standing in the dock for his sentencing in the
High Court in Palmerston North. STUFF
The child's mother said in a victim impact statement she regretted the day Marshall came into their lives. "You used our trust to commit the ultimate betrayal. You destroyed the life of a little girl."
Seeing him made her physically ill, she said. "You are a monster. You should be locked up forever with the key lost."
Her daughter suffered physical and psychological harm as a result, and the mother feared more issues were to come.
Crown prosecutor Deborah Davies asked the judge to sentence Marshall to preventive detention. Preventive detention means an offender will be held for life unless they prove they are not a risk to the community.
Marshall's offending was lengthy and premeditated, while he denied almost everything when interviewed by psychologists. "He has caused lengthy, serious harm to this community and this young girl," Davies said.
The judge said those factors played a part in the sentence, but preventive detention could not be justified. While there was a need to deter and denounce Marshall's crimes, and he had been assessed as high risk of reoffending, he had never had the chance to undertake treatment for his sexual deviancy.
His criminal history had no sexual offending, and he would likely be subject to an extended supervision order when released, a judge said. Marshall was placed on the child sex offender register and given a first strike warning for violent offenders.
Helsinki Appeal Court reduces sentence for teacher

The Helsinki Appeal Court on Monday reduced the sentence of an over-40-year-old teacher convicted for acts of child sex abuse committed at a city school between 2013 and 2017. A lower court found the man guilty of touching pupils during class and sending them photos of his genitals as well as images depicting homosexual sex acts.
In December 2018, the Helsinki District Court handed down an 18-month suspended sentence to the man on nine counts of child sex abuse. He was also ordered to pay damages ranging from 1,200 to 1,500 euros to victims.
However, the man appealed his sentence and on Monday the appellate court reduced the suspended sentence from 18 to 14 months. The appeal court ruled that not all of the instances when the man touched the pupils could be considered child sex abuse.
Court: Touching head, hair, neck "not sexual"
It rejected the lower court’s argument that touching the head, hair and neck and massaging the shoulders were sexual acts. It said that they were not sexual acts that could damage a child’s development and therefore in light of the circumstances were not sexual in nature.
However, it found that touching the children near their genitals, on their thighs and on their stomachs constituted sexual acts.
With regard to one of the victims, the appeal court considered the question of whether or not the teacher knew that the recipient of his photos was under the age of 16. In Finland, the age of consent is 16. It ruled that the teacher did know and therefore his action was premeditated. He had sent a 15-year-old student photos of his genitals and his anus.
The appeal court did not reduce sentencing with regard to the damages the teacher was ordered to pay.

Stoke-on-Trent pervert, 58, caught with
child sex abuse images - again
By Stoke-on-Trent Live
Pervert Steven Cartlidge was caught with child abuse images on his computer - for the second time.
The 58-year-old downloaded the photos between 2015 and 2017, only a few years after he completed a three-year community order he received in 2010 for similar offences committed in 2008.
Now Cartlidge has been sentenced to a new three-year community order at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Because the first one worked so well, I guess.
Prosecutor Ben Williams said the defendant is a registered sex offender after being convicted of 10 offences of making indecent images of children in 2010.
He was handed a three-year community order, made the subject of a sexual offences prevention order and placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
But police attended Meir home on June 7, 2017 and seized his phone, tablet, Kindle and a computer. Mr Williams said: “His phone was examined and was found to contain images of young females, but they were all over-age.
“The computer was found to contain three category A still images, two images at category B and 378 at category C. “He accepted responsibility for all the images. He said it was a result of his spiralling depression. He said he found some comfort and stimulation and excitement in the act of searching.”
Cartlidge, of Montgomery Place, Meir, pleaded guilty to three offences of making indecent images of children.
Scott Ashdown, mitigating, conceded it was an aggravating feature that the defendant has a previous conviction for similar offences and has already had a three-year community order. But he said Cartlidge has taken steps to change his ways.
He said the delay in the matter coming to court has given the defendant the chance to show he can ‘stay away from this kind of despicable behaviour’.
Mr Ashdown told the court: “Yes, he has done work, but he requires further work to provide the best prospects of causing change. He states he needs help and he understands the problem lies with him.”
He added that the defendant would suffer in a custodial environment. Why?
As part of the order, Cartlidge must complete a sexual offenders’ programme and a rehabilitation activity requirement for 20 days.
Woah! 20 days! That should be life-changing, I'm sure.
Judge David Fletcher said: “I do not accept the thrill was from seeking and you have no sexual interest in children. These are offences against children. They are not mannequins or dolls. They are real. They are somewhere in the world and they are being vilely exploited.”
The judge warned the defendant he can expect a prison sentence in the region of 12 months if he breaches the order.
Cartlidge was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order until further order and was placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
A man from York has been jailed for eight years
for sexually abusing a boy
Daniel Martin, aged 22, from the Clifton area of the city, was sentenced at York Crown Court – sitting at Leeds Crown Court.
He was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
Martin had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of rape, three counts of inciting a boy to commit a sexual act, and one count of sexual assault.
The offences occurred between 2013 and 2015 and began when the victim was 12 years of age.
The victim bravely came forward to North Yorkshire Police in June 2019 to report the non-recent sexual abuse.
Following a detailed investigation led by Detective Constable Rosanne Draycott, of York CID, Martin was finally brought to justice.
DC Draycott said: “The victim has endured unimaginable torment and trauma from a very young age, and the impact of the abuse continues to this day.
The outcome at court will hopefully provide some comfort to him knowing that the perpetrator has been sent to prison for a very long time.
This case proves again that it is never too late to seek justice against abusers, not matter when it occurred. We say to victims, please don’t suffer in silence - we are here to help and support you every step of the way.”
