Charges have been laid against a man from Burnaby, B.C. after the RCMP investigated an alleged sexual assault of a child.
The RCMP say a girl, whose age has not been released, and her mother reported the allegations to police on May 7.
The child told police she met the man online and the sexual assault is alleged to have happened during a meeting he arranged with her.
The prosecution service has approved charges of sexual assault with a weapon, sexual interference, luring a child, possession of a restricted weapon and using a firearm to commit an offence.
The man has not been named and police say he remains in custody.
Insp. Matt Toews says the Burnaby detachment's victim services team is ensuring the girl and her family are being supported.
In a news release, the RCMP say they are advising parents to speak to their children about the social connections they make online during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"With so many new social media platforms being used by young people each and every day, we understand that it can be overwhelming for parents," Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in the statement. "What we're asking today, is to follow the advice we've outlined, take the time to sit and chat with any young person using social media in your home."
The 'depraved and dreadful' UK child molester who shared sick pictures with other paedophiles
A "depraved" paedophile who confessed to molesting a child in an online chat with an undercover police officer is starting a long prison sentence today.
Daniel Richard Childs, 31, begins an extended 15-year sentence still in denial about the sexual motivation for his behaviour.
He talked to other paedophiles about child abuse in a chat room, Teesside Crown Court heard. He went further and claimed he had done "everything" with a child while talking to an undercover officer via social media.
He revealed he had abused children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and had taken pictures and videos while doing so. Prosecutor Shaun Dodds described Childs' actions, many of which are too distressing to report, towards the young children.
Childs sent photos of a child to the officer and asked the officer for similar pictures, the court was told.
Officers from the North-east paedophile investigation team moved swiftly to protect children and preserve evidence which would have been deleted. They traced Childs to his Teesside home and seized his phone which contained 44 child abuse images.
Mum 'devastated and angry'
It revealed he had sent an indecent video to a like-minded person in an online chat.
A victim's mother said in a statement she was devastated and angry and sometimes did not feel like it was real. She said she dreaded the day she would have to explain what happened, but her family had rallied and pulled together.
Childs told police he had discussed fantasy role play with others and sent images, saying he was lonely and depressed. He confessed to the sexual assaults but denied gaining sexual gratification from his actions.
"He said he was hugely sorry, embarrassed and ashamed and that his life was over," added Mr Dodds.
'Abject horror'
He pleaded guilty to 12 sexual offences in January and appeared in court via video link to Durham Prison for sentencing on Tuesday.
He admitted six charges of sexual assault on a child, two of sexual activity with a child, one of distributing and three of making indecent photographs of children, his first conviction.
He denied a charge of rape, which was left to lie on the court file.
Childs was arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children in 2017. Police found relevant search terms but had insufficient evidence and took no further action, the court heard.
Victoria Lamballe, defending, said Childs was candid with police when he could have stayed silent and knew he faced a long jail term. She said: "He is well able to acknowledge the abject horror any right-thinking person would feel at hearing these offences."
And yet...
'Exceptionally serious'
She said his apparent refusal to accept his motivation was not unusual. "Such attempts to downplay the motivation can be a form of defence mechanism," added Ms Lamballe.
She said Childs also maintained he did no physical harm. But it was "early days" and Childs was receptive to courses for sex offenders in prison to tackle his "thinking deficits".
It's a moral deficit, not a mental one.
Judge Stephen Ashurst described Childs' crimes as "dreadful" and "exceptionally serious".
He said: "Not only did you touch them sexually, but you also captured the abuse in images you were willing to share on social media with other like-minded men. Your crimes were planned.
'Horrified and in shock'
"You had your mobile phone at the ready to film your activities and potentially share the images with other depraved men. "What you did was to take part in online discussions with like-minded men. That was a chat room for those who had a particular interest.
"It is of course somewhat distressing to discover that there are such groups of like-minded men willing to discuss and share images of abuse. "Your arrest of course was dramatic. The police are to be commended in this case for acting very swiftly when the undercover officer was made aware of your activities."
The judge said Childs ignored the "warning shot" in 2017 and might have been given "comfort" by the inability to prosecute him then. He said those related to the victims were "horrified and remain in shock".
He added Childs was in denial about his motives, played down the harm he caused and focused on his own unhappiness.
This is what narcissists do! Are all paedophiles narcissists?
High risk to children
He ruled Childs posed a significant risk of serious harm to the public, with the Probation Service assessing him as a high risk to children.
Childs was given an extended 15-year sentence.
This consists of a 10-year jail term, of which he will serve at least two thirds before the Parole Board decide whether it is safe to release him, plus five years' extended licence.
He was given a restraining order and will be on the sex offenders' register, both indefinitely.
Officers from Cleveland Police’s children and vulnerable adult team today welcomed the sentence.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Rebecca Lisle said: “This case demonstrates that forces across the UK and even further afield work 24 hours a day striving to identify and bring to justice those who abuse vulnerable children.
“We will continue to work with our police colleagues and specialist organisations to deal with perpetrators and to safeguard their victims."

Sydney court hears horrific details about notorious Colt family accused of horrific sexual abuse of inbred children
By AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATED PRESS
Incestuous rape was 'not a secret' in the infamous Colt family with a 17-year-old allegedly sexually assaulted by her uncle told to keep her mouth shut, a judge has been told.
Frank Colt, a pseudonym, is facing a judge-alone trial in the Sydney District Court eight years after authorities discovered about 40 members of the clan living in squalor on a rural property in NSW.
The 50-year-old has pleaded not guilty to raping his then-17-year-old niece, Petra, in the back of his car in February 2010.

The court heard that the two - like many others in the family - shared the same father.
'I tried to fight him off but he wouldn't listen,' Petra, also a pseudonym, told the court on Tuesday. 'I was kicking and punching him, pulling his hair.'
The Crown alleges another uncle began sexually assaulting her when she was a child. 'This was not a secret in the family,' crown prosecutor Katharine Jeffreys said. 'The complainant's parents knew and ... told her to keep her mouth shut.'
The court heard a recording of Petra telling police in 2018 that she, Frank and her mother shared a biological father - Tim Colt. Tim was also father to her mother's 11 other surviving children and all but one of her aunt's six children.
The court heard a recording of the teenager telling police in 2018 that she, Frank and her mother Betty (pictured) shared a biological father - Tim Colt
The family moved across the country on several occasions, staying in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia at times, Ms Jeffreys said.
'This family was a most unusual one. This was a large family that lived together in relatively isolated locations and the complainant didn't go to school.'
After the death of patriarch Tim Colt in Western Australia in 2009, Ms Jeffreys said the family spent 18 months at the rural property in NSW where the alleged sexual assault occurred.
Caravans and tents were the living quarters and no toilet or shower facilities were available.
Children spent the vast majority of their time on the property but some older adults including Frank would come and go, the court was told.
One night in February 2010, after Petra had a fight with her mother and went for a walk, she passed Frank's car. 'He grabbed me from behind and he threw me headfirst into the car,' Petra said, detailing how she was held down as he forced her knees open.
Caravans and tents were the living quarters and no toilet or shower facilities were available
The incident lasted 10 to 15 minutes before Frank threw her and her clothes out of the car and called her an 'ungrateful bitch and a pig', Petra said.
Under cross-examination, the now-27-year-old said Tuesday was the first time she'd mentioned the specific slurs.
The court heard Petra told Victorian police in 2013 she was living in 'a cult' only to retract it later before NSW detectives.
'I live in a cult, I never went to school,' she told police during a visit alone to Swan Hill. 'All my aunts, uncles, cousins have all been sleeping together.'
But after she returned home to Orange in NSW, she told police there she hadn't been in her 'right mind' and had been 'high on OxyContin'.
Petra on Tuesday said she didn't recall withdrawing her original statement. 'No, I didn't say that,' she said. She denied making up the allegation that Frank raped her.
In August 2018, three years after breaking away from her family, she told police Frank raped her.
The trial resumes on Wednesday.
The children spent the vast majority of their time on the property but some older adults including Frank would come and go, the court was told ( a child of the Colt family is pictured)

The National Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday that it had wrapped up a preliminary investigation into a series of child sex abuse cases involving 22 victims.
The NBI said in a statement on Tuesday that it had remanded a 41-year-old Jyväskylä resident into custody in connection with the case. Investigators said that the offences involved the use of social media but did not name the platforms the man used. The suspected offences allegedly occurred between 2018 and 2020.
Police said that back in 2018, they received several leads about the suspected sexual abuse and began investigating the case in autumn 2019. In October police detained the man as the main suspect in the case. He was released in December and taken into custody once more in mid-April.
"No physical intercourse was suspected in the offences, nor are other persons under suspicion. The case involves the so-called 'grooming' phenomenon, which means approaching children online with sexual intentions," lead investigator Sanna Springare said in the statement.
The NBI said that investigators cooperated with local police in Jyväskylä and that the case has now been referred to prosecutors in western Finland for consideration of charges.
Aussie Greens election candidate granted bail for charges of paying to watch child sex abuse video
By AAPA Greens federal election candidate who allegedly paid to watch and direct the live stream of a child being sexually abused in the Philippines has been granted strict conditional bail.
Jonathan Doig, who stood for the Greens in 2019 against Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the seat of Cook, was arrested after he allegedly paid a known child abuse facilitator so he could watch in real time the abuse of a 13-year-old schoolgirl.
The 57-year-old software engineer appeared via video link in Sydney's Central Local Court on Wednesday.

Doig is accused of paying more than $120,000 over 10 years to about 97 separate beneficiaries in the Philippines.
Prosecutor Sandra Lo said Doig had been conversing daily with the teenage victim since December 2019 until his arrest. Ms Lo alleged the pair exchanged more than 350 videos.
She said Doig's connection to the Philippines meant he posed a risk to the community. Detectives allege there are more victims. "The internet means ... he has unlimited access to vulnerable children," Ms Lo told the court on Wednesday.
But Doig's defence lawyer said he had no criminal convictions and was willing to relinquish all electronic devices if granted bail. "His wife is prepared to allow him to return home and will monitor his conduct," barrister Gregory Stanton said.
Mr Stanton said the nature of the case meant that if granted bail, Doig's online presence would be under "a most diligent and constant scrutiny."
Magistrate Margaret Quinn granted Doig bail on strict conditions including that he report three times a week to Sutherland Police Station, have no access to internet devices and give up his passport.
Doig is banned from being alone with anyone under the age of 16 outside his direct family.
"Any matter dealing with child sexual offences of pornography, whether it's in or out of Australia, is abhorrent," Ms Quinn told the court.
Doig faces charges of procuring a child to engage in sexual activity outside Australia and both soliciting and possessing child abuse material.
Two of the charges come with a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, while the other carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.
He's scheduled to appear in court again on August 4.
West Sussex child sex offender given lengthy jail term
A West Sussex man who pleaded guilty to raping and sexually assaulting a young girl is starting a 15-year prison sentence.
Sussex Police said 32-year-old Adam Arnold from Crawley systematically abused his victim over a period of five years.
Arnold, unemployed and of Webb Close, admitted to four counts of rape and eight counts of serious sexual assaults, all covering multiple occasions.
"Arnold came to know his victim, and five years ago began this horrific and systematic abuse which she suffered, unbeknown to anyone else, until she felt able to confide in someone she knew last year, and we were promptly informed.
"We took immediate action and Arnold was arrested.
"This young girl had endured the trauma and distress of what happened to her, in secret, and we admire all the more her courage and resolution in now supporting both our investigation and the prosecution."
Detective Constable Ellen Jones, East Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit
Arnold appeared via videolink for sentencing at Hove Crown Court on Tuesday.
Along with his jail term, he will also be a registered sex offender for life and was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to last until further court order, severely restricting his access to women and children.
"If you are a victim of sexual abuse, or know of someone else who is, no matter how recent or long ago, contact us at any time in confidence, and arrange to talk in confidence to experienced investigators.
"We have specialist officers who can also help you access to a range of independent advice and support."

'Cunning' paedophile jailed in UK after admitting
nearly 50 child sex offences
Yahoo News UK Will TaylorA “cunning” paedophile has been sentenced to 10 years for almost 50 child sex offences.
Daniel Berry, 31, of Prestwich, Greater Manchester, had pleaded guilty to 28 counts of causing or inciting children aged between 12 and 15 to engage in sexual activity.
He used offers of large amounts of cash to lure young girls into sending him indecent videos of themselves, promising a glamorous lifestyle.
Online, he pretended to be a female casting agent and a male studio owner to exploit the naivety of his 16 victims, aged 12 to 15. He asked for photos and videos before enticing them into explicit poses in exchange for thousands of pounds, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court was told.
As the victims became wary of his demands and lack of payment, he threatened to post their footage online and sue them for time wasting if they didn’t comply.
Sentencing, Judge Tina Landale told Berry: “These very grave offences were planned and executed with cunning. You enjoyed the feeling of power and control. You callously and deliberately offered preposterous amounts of money, the pretence of a glamorous lifestyle and gifts. When that did not work you manipulated, bullied and intimidated them [the girls].”
Berry had also admitted 10 counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act, five counts of distributing indecent images of children and one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image.
He also pleaded guilty to four counts of making thousands of indecent images of children, with 1,329 classed as Category A, the most serious, 971 at Category B and 2,862 at Category C.
He had amassed more than 1,000 videos of child abuse since 2012, described as the “most depraved and horrific imaginable”.
The 48 offences took place between February 2017 and January 2019.
Berry was arrested that month after police were made aware of online grooming, and examination of his devices showed he had groomed children in the UK and abroad. He would contact the victims on Facebook while posing as a casting agent, move the interaction to a mobile messaging app and then promise fame and fortune.
He told some girls they were his “new star” and that he would enter them into a modelling contest in Thailand with a £250,000 prize, and offered one £2m a year to keep sending explicit videos. Some were persuaded to recruit other girls in exchange for money, the court heard.
Mark Shanks, defending, said Berry’s upbringing was normal and he had several relationships with females who were age-appropriate, but by his early 20s he realised his thoughts were “not normal”.
Berry had asked to say he was “extremely sorry” to his victims, Shanks said, and most of his family had disowned him. However, Judge Landale said he had shown “a complete lack of insight” into the damage he had caused.
Berry, who lived with his parents in Bannerman Avenue, was said to pose a high risk of serious harm to the public, especially to young girls, and will have to serve an extended licence period of three years. He must serve at least two-thirds of his jail term.
He will be on the sex offender register for life and is also subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
Good Grief! 10 years for all those horrible things he did! That's pathetic!
