38 Suspected Online Grooming Paedophiles Arrested in London

KURT ZINDULKA

London’s Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) has arrested nearly 40 suspected online grooming paedophiles and have launched protective services to safeguard 138 children throughout the city.

As a part of Operation Legatum, which ran between May 18th and May 23rd that targeted online grooming, police seized dozens of laptops, tablets, and phones that are believed to contain indecent pornographic material of children.

The MPS will now comb through tens of thousands of files as a part of the investigation, which targeted a group of men “from a variety of backgrounds”.

The Met’s Online Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (OCSAE) Unit warned that during the national lockdown, there is an increased threat to children due to the amount of time spent on the internet rather than being in school.

“Since the lockdown started, officers have been working flat out to track down those suspected of harming children and young people online,” said Detective Superintendent Helen Flanagan.

“Online offenders sometimes try and convince themselves that they’re ‘only looking’, but there is no such thing. Every image is a crime scene, with a real child being abused. Every time offenders look at or share that image they are committing a vile crime and repeating abuse which devastates lives,” Flanagan added.

In March, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) warned that sexual predators would try to take advantage of the coronavirus lockdown to exploit children. The crime agency said that there are indications of “increased online activity by those seeking child abuse material”.

In the first month of the national lockdown, which began on March 23rd, police officers in London arrested 45 suspected paedophiles, protected 92 children, and executed 68 warrants.

The Met said that it is receiving an average of 50 reports a week from the National Crime Agency, but noted that the figures are expected to rise later in the year when crime figures during the lockdown are published.

“Lockdown has led to a significant growth in online use, including by children. Unfortunately, it also means there are a greater number of sexual predators out there trying to target and groom young people,” Det Supt Flanagan said.

WA police uncover paedophile ring in Perth
arrest 18 members rescue 23 teenage girls
140 Perth Teens Targeted

By ISABELLE STACKPOOL FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA

Police have arrested 11 men across Perth as part of an operation into the grooming of teenagers on social media, after finding 23 of the youngsters had suffered sexual abuse.

The accused predators, aged between 18 and 41, were alleged to have used platforms like Facebook and Instagram to target 140 teenagers across Perth aged as young as 13.

Detectives from the Sex Offender Management Squad launched Operation Timing Belt in April and announced the arrests on Saturday, resulting in 79 sexual offence charges being laid.

At least 11 people have been arrested (pictured) after WA Police launched a four-month-long investigation into an alleged paedophile ring grooming teenagers through social media

It is understood at least four of the accused offenders had previous convictions for child sex offences.

The operation identified 140 teenagers aged between 13 and 19 who were targeted by the group, and 23 of them were found to be victims of sexual abuse.

WA Police said some of the accused offenders would compare information about their victims and share the targets.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Daly said the accused predators allegedly contacted the teenagers through social media to 'ultimately engage in sexual contact with them'.

'The majority of offences are non-physical communication via popular social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, and via mobile phones,' he explained.

WA Police also confiscated computer equipment in connection with the alleged abuse as part of the series of raids.

'Mobile phones and the ongoing rise of social media platforms provides offenders with new ways to reach out to youths in order to commit crimes and we're working hard to crackdown on this behaviour,' Snr Sgt Daly said.

In all, 18 offenders had been charged as part of Operation Timing Belt, with 135 charges laid for non-sexual offences including drug, trespass and animal cruelty offences.

State Crime Assistant Commissioner Brad Royce said Timing Belt showed that parents and children must be vigilant in terms of cyber safety. 'They come in from likes and friends from other people and they get accepted and then they start grooming.

'You wouldn't let a stranger into your home if they randomly knocked on the front door – likewise, you shouldn't allow someone to access your online profile unless you know them,' Mr Royce said.

WA Police are continuing the investigation under Operation Timing Belt.

Russian women 'behind brutal raping and killing of man
wrongly suspected of being a paedophile'

Truck driver Dmitry Chikvarkin was sexually attacked and then killed in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, in Russia's Sverdlovsk region, following false reports that he had assaulted children

By Milo Boyd, Mirror

Valeria Dunaeva is accused of launching the attack

A trio of women are alleged to be behind the vigilante killing of a man wrongly suspected of being a paedophile.

Truck driver Dmitry Chikvarkin died from horrific head injuries (6th story on link) after the brutal attack.

The 48-year-old, who ran his own lorry business, was impaled with a metal pipe before being bashed to death in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, in Russia's Sverdlovsk region.

Two of the three alleged female killers remain on the run, as does a man who is suspected of participating in the attack, police have said.

The horrific events began to unfold when a ten-year-old girl said that, along with a three-year-old, she had been “touched below the waist” by Chikvarkin.

Law enforcement have said that the allegations were not true.

Wilson faces a 94 count indictment which covers 49 victims whose ages range from four to 14.

The alleged offences were committed between 1 May 2016 and 31 May 2018.

The charges include intentionally causing or inciting children to engage in sexual activity and making unwanted demands for indecent images of a child with menaces.

Wilson was remanded to custody and will next appear at Ipswich Crown Court on September 22.

Child sexual abuse in Tasmanian schools to be focus of new inquiry as survivors sue department

By state political reporter Alexandra Humphries, ABC

The inquiry will look at past and current policies and practices into child sex abuse by education employees.(AFP)

An independent inquiry into child sexual abuse in government schools has been announced by the Tasmanian Government, following a move by survivors earlier this year to sue the Education Department for negligence over its handling of complaints.

Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff announced the inquiry in Parliament, with an independent reviewer to be appointed shortly. "The safety of our children and young people is of utmost importance to the Tasmanian Government," Mr Rockliff said.

"People such as teachers are in a position of trust, and it is critical that the checks are in place to ensure that trust is not abused in any way."

It comes after revelations in May that at least seven survivors of abuse were preparing to sue the Education Department, alleging the department protected up to 10 child-molesting teachers.

The inquiry will look at whether past systems used by the Department of Education did not encourage reporting or investigation of child sexual abuse, or did not alleviate the risk of repeated child sexual abuse by an employee.

It will also consider whether current legislation, policies and practices are working to minimise the risk of child sexual abuse in Tasmanian schools.

Mr Rockliff said the inquiry was intended to complement, rather than replicate, the work of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

"Our intent is to ensure we are doing everything possible to protect young people in government schools, today and into the future," he said. Our thoughts are with the people who have been harmed by sexual abuse, and I acknowledge that this inquiry will be distressing for some. We need an assurance that the systems we have in place today are the best that they can be."

Lawyer Sebastian Buscemi, of Angela Sdrinis Legal, said he was working with more than 50 claimants seeking financial compensation from the department.

Hobart lawyer Sebastian Buscemi says the terms of reference miss the point.(ABC News: Loretta Lohberger)

He said he was disappointed after reading the terms of reference for the inquiry and felt it was asking the wrong questions.

"It misses the entire issue that's unfolded within the Department of Education, and I don't think it's going to achieve anything, let alone provide any kind of answers for survivors of abuse," Mr Buscemi said.

"The main problem is not that there were no laws to protect children — Tasmania had mandatory reporting from the mid-1970s — the problem is that they were being ignored and that teachers who were subject to credible allegations of abuse were being moved from school to school."

Commissioner for Children and Young People Leanne McLean welcomed the announcement, but said more work was needed.

"Child safety and wellbeing must be embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture at every level to ensure organisations and services are indeed child safe," she said.

"While I applaud the Government's actions in undertaking this review, Tasmania must also prioritise the development of a comprehensive child-safe legislative framework, including standards that all organisations providing services to children must meet."

Labor and the Greens said they supported the inquiry.

Murderer sentenced to 17 years in prison for child sex offences
in Stevenage, UK
Louise McEvoy

John Dickinson, 66, of Kennington Park Road in London, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday for eight offences of sexual abuse committed in Stevenage between 1973 and 1977.

The offences started when the two victims were just two and four years old and came to light in 2017 when one of them disclosed the abuse she had suffered as a young child to the police.

Dickinson was convicted at Cambridge Crown Court on September 12 last year, when a jury found him guilty unanimously, bar one count which was by a 10 to 2 majority.

During the eight-day trial, reference was also made to Dickinson’s previous convictions, including the murder of Susan Lowson in Stevenage in 1980 and subsequent arson at her flat. Dickinson was sentenced to life imprisonment for this crime and was released on licence in 2014.

In February last year he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in connection with a firearms offence and recalled back to prison. He has received an additional one-year sentence for this.

Dickinson will be on the sex offenders’ register for life and has also been issued with a sexual harm prevention order.

Investigating officer Fiona Peters, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Joint Child Protection Investigation Unit, said: “John Dickinson has finally been punished for these hideous crimes committed against extremely young children.

“Dickinson subjected these children to sustained periods of abuse when they were at a very vulnerable age, betraying their trust in him. They have shown great courage in coming forward and giving evidence in this case, which has secured this conviction. I commend them for their bravery.

“Hertfordshire Constabulary is committed to bringing to justice those who sexually abuse children. I would urge anyone who believes they have been a victim of this type of crime to come forward, no matter how long ago the offences occurred.

“You will be dealt with in confidence, and our dedicated team of officers will investigate your case sensitively and professionally.”

Blue Mountains ‘circus family’ breaks silence
over false child sex abuse charges

The innocent circus family wrongly charged with being in a sadistic child sex ring that carried out blood rituals and stuck pins in a child’s eye have spoken.

Therese Ann Cook, 60, and her daughters Yyani Cook-Williams, 30, and Clarissa Meredith, 25, spent six months behind bars at Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre before they were cleared of any wrongdoing.

Search this blog for 'Yyani' for more posts on this tragic story.

A 20-year-old man and 54-year-old Paul Cook, Therese’s brother, were also cleared.

Seven members of the family, who have run a circus school in Katoomba for more than a decade, were charged with more than 120 offences in 2018.

But the horror allegations were dropped by police.

Seven months later the family will break their silence on their desperate bid to clear their name.

Appearing on 60 Minutes Therese Cook broke down in tears when she explained how she was told she could spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Some of the offences were said to have involved three boys younger than 10 and were said to occur between 2014 and 2016, but the charges were all dropped.

Court documents revealed bizarre allegations, including sticking needles in their eyes, tongues being bitten and that one boy was lifted up by his penis.

Charges included false allegations of rape, assault and kidnapping.

Therese Cook was charged with 43 offences, including aggravated assault of a child, sexual intercourse with a child under 10 and holding children against their will.

At the time it was also alleged the family took part in ‘blood rituals’.

“I still get scared. Very, very scared,” Therese Cook said in a preview for the interview.

All charges against her were quashed.

Paul Cook told the program he still feels “pain, sadness, some days despair”.

The family’s lawyer Bryan Wrench said the four accused family members had spent a total of 206 days behind bars for crimes they did not commit.

“It’s been a saga, it’s finally over, it’s been two years since they have seen their family and today will be reunited,” he told 9 News at the time.

Meredith, Therese Cook’s adopted daughter, was hit with 13 charges and her daughter Yyani Cook-Williams with eight. They all maintained their innocence throughout the ordeal and were finally freed after nearly two years of hell.

The family was arrested in February 2018. The three women spent six months behind bars before they were granted bail.

A year later a young boy, who was an alleged victim, penned a letter to his mother saying he lied about being assaulted. Mr Wrench argued that the boy’s mother had hidden the note from investigators.

She needs to be charged with something, or sued by the Cook family.

The joy and happiness in their earlier photos are replaced by anger and bitterness in the faces of family members. I'm sure this case could have been handled much better.

All charges were dropped two years later in February 2020.

Israeli High Court rules alleged sex offender Malka Leifer fit to stand trial,
can be extradited to Australia
by J-Wire Newsdesk

The High Court of Justice unanimously rejected an appeal filed by alleged sex offender Malka Leifer in the extradition proceedings pending in her case, paving her way for extradition back to Australia where she will stand trial.

A three-member panel in Israel’s highest judicial entity ruled that Leifer’s mental condition did not preclude her extradition to Australia.

Now that the appeal has been dismissed, the extradition request itself will be ruled on. The parties have already argued this issue before the District Court and the decision is currently waiting for approval.

The court’s decision that Leifer is mentally fit for trial follows some six years of legal proceedings against the alleged offender.

A psychiatric panel in January decided that the alleged sex offender, who escaped to Israel from Australia, is mentally fit to stand trial and has been feigning mental illness.

Former Health Minister Yaakov Litzman was embroiled in the controversy when the police exposed his aid to have Leifer kept in Israel and declared unfit to stand trial.

Leifer, a former Ultra-Orthodox girls’ school principal, is charged in Australia with dozens of cases of child abuse. She fled to Israel in 2008 following allegations that she had sexually abused students at the Adass Yisroel school in Melbourne on 74 different occasions.

Zionist Federation of Australia President Jeremy Leibler welcomed the Supreme Court decision. “Video and other evidence made it obvious that Leifer was faking mental incapacity. This unanimous rejection of her appeal by the Supreme Court helps restore faith in a system that allowed Leifer’s alleged victims to wait for so long. It is past time to bring Leifer back to face justice in Australia.”

Child sexual abuse advocate Manny Waks said: “This decision was completely expected, as it’s been clear to practically everyone following this case – including countless experts – that Leifer has taken the Israeli judicial system for a major ride. In their ruling, even the judges said that proceedings had dragged out ‘much beyond what is reasonable’.

With Leifer’s legal avenues running out, we hope and expect that we now see her swiftly sent back to Australia where she will face her accusers.

Once that has occurred, a full review needs to take place in Israel to find out why this particular case has dragged out so long and whether allegations of political interference are substantiated.

Again, we commend and continue to fully support Leifer’s courageous victims, Nicole, Dassi and Elly.”

Alleged victim Dassi Erlich said: “6 years and 70 court hearings regarding Leifer’s mental fitness! We are exhilarated, finally an end in sight!

The Supreme court has rejected Leifer’s mental fitness appeal. During this tumultuous journey, there were moments that this did not seem possible!

Bring on Sept 21 and an extradition decision! Beyond excited!”

German police raid 50 homes in child abuse probe

A thousand police officers in Germany raided the homes of 50 people as part of a nationwide crackdown on the online sharing and distribution of child pornography, Cologne police said Wednesday.

None of the 48 men and two women suspected of involvement was arrested during Tuesday's raids, but investigators seized around 2,000 phones, computers and other devices upon which images were stored, police said.

The suspects are accused of sharing images of child sexual abuse through networks such as social media and messenger services, said Michael Esser, director of criminal investigations for the Cologne police. None of them are suspected of directly abusing any children, according to the current state of the investigation.

"Behind every picture, there is a victim of sexual abuse,” Esser said. "We will never give up the fight against pedophile criminals.”

The suspects present a cross-section of society, young and old, single and married, Cologne prosecutor Markus Hartmann said.

The raids took place in 12 states, with a focus on Bavaria. They were part of an investigation that began in October 2019 and has so far identified 207 suspects.

"What's important is that we are seeing a new kind of crime," Esser said. "The perpetrators are not acting on their own, but are part of bigger networks which are using the structures of online communication.”

Police received a lot of support in their investigation from one specific messenger service operator, Esser said. He declined to say which one.

Investigators are looking quickly through the seized images to see if they can find evidence indicating that children are still being abused and if so, they will try to find and rescue the victims.

Germany has been left shocked at the discovery of several serious cases of child sex abuse over the past 18 months.

The country's officials have launched an investigation of some 30,000 suspects as part of a widening probe into a pedophile network in the western Bergisch Gladbach region in June. Investigations concern the distribution and possession of child pornography as well as other forms of abuse, authorities said.

Last autumn, police in Bergisch Gladbach detained a 43-year-old man over allegations of abusing his daughter as a baby. Officials said he was filming abuse and shared the videos with people through the internet. To date, just over 70 suspects have been identified throughout Germany.

In early June, 11 people were arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing children and filming their actions after videos and photos were seized from the cellar of a 27-year-old man from the western city of Munster, also in North Rhine-Westphalia state. Investigators said they had identified at least three victims, aged 5, 10 and 12 years old. Officials said then that investigative capacities on child abuse had been increased, which would likely lead to the discovery of more cases.

Former child refugees Abdoul and Fatouma Abdi sue N.S.
for alleged abuse in care

Siblings were taken from their family soon after arriving in Canada

Two siblings who were taken into provincial care as child refugees nearly 20 years ago are now suing the Nova Scotia government and a group care home, alleging abuse and a failure to respect their heritage.

Fatouma Abdi, 28, and her brother Abdoul Abdi, 26, came to Canada from Somalia in 2000 and by the end of 2001, they were taken from their two aunts — who were their primary caregivers — and put into the care of Nova Scotia's Department of Community Services.

It would be interesting to know why they were removed from their aunts' care.

In a statement of claim, filed to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia on Tuesday, the Abdis' lawyer detailed the siblings' time living in a variety of foster homes and care facilities. The Abdis' aunts tried to regain custody of both children over the years but never succeeded.

The statement alleges the siblings suffered mental, physical and sexual abuse throughout their time in care, and that they were repeatedly placed in settings that "stifled" the children's Somali culture.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

The lawsuit was filed against the Attorney General of Nova Scotia, the former Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children (where Abdoul Abdi lived for five months in 2008) and the two companies that took over operations of the home in 2013, Akoma Family Centre Inc. and Akoma Holdings Inc.

The Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children has been the subject of abuse allegations before, and complaints from former residents sparked an inquiry, an apology from Premier Stephen McNeil in 2014, and a class-action lawsuit that eventually settled for $34 million.

Statements of defence in the Abdis' lawsuit have not yet been filed. A spokesperson for the province told CBC News it could not comment because the matter is before the courts. The Akoma companies did not respond to a request for comment.

Deportation battle

Abdoul Abdi made headlines in 2018 when he faced deportation after completing a prison term. He fought the deportation based on his childhood in provincial care, during which time no one from the 31 different foster homes and groups homes where he lived applied for citizenship for him.

Ottawa eventually dropped the deportation proceedings, and the case led to policy change in Nova Scotia, granting the power to social workers to apply for Canadian citizenship on children's behalf.

The near-deportation isn't mentioned in the new lawsuit, but the Abdis' lawyer, Mike Dull, said it was a consequence of the alleged failings of the provincial care system.

"What often happens due to the psychological harms of experiencing abuse in care is that you struggle in early adulthood," he said. "[Abdoul] didn't know how to operate as a young adult in Nova Scotia, in Canada, and made some bad decisions at a very young age and ended up getting in trouble with the law ... and then obviously faced deportation."

The siblings' court filing says they are seeking a declaration that their Charter right to security of the person was infringed, and damages.

Dull wouldn't say how much financial compensation they were seeking, but said they hoped any damages awarded would help them "better their lives and those of their children" through things like education or psychological counselling.

"They are fortunate to be still relatively young compared to a lot of survivors of historic abuse who come forward," Dull said in an interview.

He said it's also important to the Abdis that their case is examined in a systemic context. "I know it's a really big deal for them to ensure that this doesn't happen to future children, specifically children who are racialized or perhaps new immigrants to this country," said Dull.

The Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children first opened as an orphanage for Black children in the 1920s. (CBC)
In my youth, I drove past that home hundreds of times. I knew what it was,
but couldn't understand why I never once saw children outside playing.

Through another lawyer, who is providing client support to the Abdis, both siblings declined interview requests on Tuesday. Fatouma Abdi provided a statement in a news release explaining why she and her brother chose to launch the lawsuit:

"In all honesty, it's going to bring light to how they run the system and what they did to other kids. I hope this forces them to change. But for me, I don't think it will ever bring me justice, because it doesn't take away what Abdoul and I went through, nor does it take away what my children went through. I don't think it will ever truly bring justice, but it's a start."

The allegations

According to the Abdis' court submission, they were prevented from practicing their Somali culture starting in their first placement out of their aunts' care. At Dayspring Children's Centre in Bridgewater, the claim says the siblings were punished for speaking their native language and Fatouma Abdi's hijab was permanently confiscated.

A significant portion of the claim deals with their experience at a foster home in Halifax, where they lived together starting in 2003. The siblings claim Fatouma objected to the placement because the foster family was connected to a rival Somali tribe, which "deeply conflicted with their heritage and culture."

They also claim they endured mental, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of the foster family, which Fatouma said she reported to the Children's Aid Society of Halifax, the agency responsible for the Abdis' placements. Fatouma was removed from the foster home in 2004 and separated from Abdoul, who stayed for three more years.

Fatouma went on to spend time at Sullivan House, where she alleged she was assaulted multiple times "by males in the community." She said she reported the assaults but nothing was done.

Later, Fatouma was placed in the Wood Street Secure Treatment Facility, where she said she endured long periods of confinement, as well as physical and psychological abuse by staff.

Fatouma gave birth to two children while she was still under the care of the province and she alleges she wasn't given adequate parenting support or services. Those children were taken from her and later adopted. She would later have two more children, twin boys, one of whom was taken into provincial care at four years old and died seven months later. The Abdis' court filing says the cause of death remains unknown.

Liability of care homes falls mostly on province

The foster family named in the lawsuit is not listed as a defendant because Dull said it wouldn't be practical to include them.

"Most foster families don't have the resources to compensate for the harms that were inflicted, nor the wherewithal to hire legal counsel to deal with that," he said.

Dull also said the province is responsible and liable for care homes, so most of the homes where the Abdis allege they endured abuse and neglect are also not listed as defendants.

The exception is the former Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children and its new owners. The claim alleged Abdoul was repeatedly sexually abused by a staff member at the home while he was living there.

India: Man strangles minor daughter, dumps body in village pond in Punjab because she was in love with a boy

Reportedly, the 45-year-old father has been arrested, the boy will also be questioned.

Evangeline Elsa, Social Media Editor

Dubai: In a suspected case of honour killing, a man in the Indian state of Punjab, strangulated his minor daughter, and dumped her body in the village pond, after coming to know that she allegedly liked a boy.

Reportedly, the incident happened on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, in Moga district’s Churchak village.

On Tuesday morning, a villager noticed the young girl’s body floating in the pond and informed the police. When a team of cops reached the spot, the body was lying near the pond’s bank.

According to an Indian news website, the police said that the 45-year-old father, Sarwan Singh, from village Churchak, was booked and arrested for strangling his 17-year old daughter.

Sub-Inspector Jaswinder Singh, of the local police station, said: “During the probe, it came out that her father Sarwan Singh killed his daughter after he got to know that the girl was having an affair with a boy who lives near their home, in the same village. He strangled her to death, and then threw the body in the village pond. Thereafter he came home and slept… It is a suspected case of honour killing.”

He added: “The girl had cleared grade 10, and was staying home these days.”

The police official said that the father is being interrogated and a probe is on. They added that the boy will also be questioned.

According to the report, the body of the deceased was sent to the civil hospital in Moga, for an autopsy. And, a First Information Report has been registered against the accused under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of Indian Penal Code.

Egypt: Suspected mass sex abuser to go on trial

Defendant is charged with assaulting, blackmailing underage girls

Cairo: Egypt’s chief prosecutor has ordered a criminal trial for a young man at the centre of alleged mass sex assaults over the past three years.

The country’s public prosecutor Hamada Al Sawi referred the Egyptian man, identified as Ahmed Bassam Zaki, to the Criminal Court on charges of sexually assaulting three underage girls and blackmailing them and another woman of dishonouring them to coerce them into continuing sex relations with him.

Ahmed, believed to be in his 20s, is also charged with violating the private life of one victim and taking drugs. No specific date has been set for his trial.

The chief prosecutor’s decision came after investigations with Ahmed, who was arrested in July, and testimonies given by victims including screenshots of his text messages and phone chats, legal sources said Wednesday.

In July, Ahmed was at the heart of a high-profile online campaign that accused him of sexually abusing and blackmailing dozens of Egyptian and foreign women, allegations that have sent shockwaves across Egypt.

Scores of women turned to social media, posting chilling testimonies claiming that Ahmed, a former student at the American University in Cairo, had blackmailed them to succumb to his sexual demands.

Paedophile police officer, 54, who starred in Cops UK: Bodycam Squad,
admits string of child sex offences
By JACK WRIGHT FOR MAILONLINE

A police officer who once starred in a crime-fighting TV series has been unmasked as a paedophile who tried to groom children online.

Lee Tatton, 54, appeared on UKTV's fly-on-the-wall documentary Cops UK: Bodycam Squad as a response officer covering Hanley in 2016. But the Staffordshire Police officer's career now lies in ruins after he admitted a number of child sex offences at Birmingham Crown Court this week.

In the show he was nicknamed Tatts and was filmed rescuing people from a flat fire and breaking up a pub brawl in Stoke by camera crews.

He was arrested in December last year while dealing with minor crime for the Northern Resolution Centre by his own force's Operation Safenet team. The dedicated unit is tasked with looking into online child abuse to protect vulnerable young people from perverts and padeophiles.

Tatton was immediately suspended from duty by Staffordshire Police and remains on suspension subject to an internal force hearing.

At court, Tatton pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and four counts of making an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child. He will be sentenced on November 2 this year.

Production company Raw Cut spent several weeks in 2016 shadowing paedophile Tatton and his fellow officers on a range of incidents. He was filmed rescuing people from a flat fire and breaking up a brawl a pub in Stoke - where he was accidentally pepper-sprayed by a colleague.

It was hoped that the crime-fighting programme - on UKTV's Really channel - would give the public an insight into the work of Staffordshire Police.

Speaking when the show premiered, Tatton said: 'It was put to our shift about the camera crews coming out with us and I was happy to volunteer. After a while it became second nature explaining to them what we were dealing with.

'I hope it will give people an insight into what we do and the things we have to deal with at 4am and 5am when most people are tucked up in bed.'

In a statement this week, Assistant Chief Constable Scott Green said: 'Tatton's actions are unacceptable and have caused harm and distress to the very people we should be protecting and keeping safe. His actions fell well below the high standards that the public and the force demands and expects of police officers.'
