The Criminal Court in the Delta governorate of Sharqia said the woman will be placed under observation for 45 days at the hospital to assess her mental abilities and responsibility for the crime.

Cairo: An Egyptian provincial court has ordered a woman, charged with murdering her baby with a TV remote controller to stop his crying, be sent to a psychiatric hospital to examine her mental capabilities, local media reported.

The Criminal Court in the Delta governorate of Sharqia said the woman will be placed under observation for 45 days at the hospital to assess her mental abilities and responsibility for the crime.

November 1 has been set for the start of the defendant’s trial after receiving a report from the hospital.

The case dates back to May when a dead baby boy aged three months was transferred to a local hospital. His death was attributed to fatal head injuries.

The child’s father accused his 24-year-old wife of killing the baby with a TV remote control before she fled the house. The accused woman was arrested three days later.

She admitted to having hit the baby with the device on the head because he was crying for too long after he incidentally (accidentally?) fell from her during kitchen work.

Patna: A local court in Bihar has asked a man accused of attempt to rape to wash clothes of all women from his village for six months free of cost to gain freedom from jail.

Avinash Kumar, Additional district judge, Jhanjharpur in Madhubani district, granted bail to the accused on Tuesday with the condition that he will wash clothes of all women from his village and return them after proper ironing.

The copies of the order have also been dispatched to the local village council chief and Sarpanch, a village council official with limited judicial power, to get information about the accused conduct and also to know whether the accused is following the court’s directive. The court order has become a talk of the town.

“The court order contains a big social message. From now on, no accused will dare to commit such a crime,” Parshuram Mishra, lawyer of the accused, said. Mishra said his client was a washerman by profession and wanted to atone for his sin through his ancestral profession. “It was after hearing his appeal that the court granted such an order,” the lawyer said.

According to officials, the total population of the village the accused belongs to is around 2,000 and thus the accused is required to wash their clothes at regular intervals in light of the court’s order. The local village council chief Nasima Khatoon termed the court’s decision as historic saying, “this will protect the honour and dignity of women and people will think a hundred times before committing such crimes.”

In the case registered with the police, the youth identified as Lalan Kumar Safi was accused of barging into the house of a woman and attempted to rape her on April 17. Acting on victim’s complaint, the police arrested the accused on April 19 and sent him to jail. Since then the 20-year-old youth had been languishing in jail.

Increasing incidents of rape have become a matter of serious concern in Bihar. According to an official report, 8,519 incidents of rape have been reported to the Bihar police department since 2015. This year alone, as many as 909 incidents of rape have been reported till July month or roughly 130 incidents are taking place every month.

More than 4 per day, and these are just the ones that are reported. Probably a small percentage of the actual total.

Dubai: An Iraqi man who had been sentenced to death for 'killing' his wife by setting her on fire and dumping her body into a river has been acquitted after she was found alive and well, local media reported.

According to media reports, the story began when the man went to the police to report the sudden disappearance of his wife. He was interrogated back then and forced to confess that he killed his wife. Investigators alleged the man had killed his wife and dumped her body into a river but police failed to find her body.

Following his forced confession, the man was sentenced to death although police found no tangible evidence against him. Some local media agencies have reported the man was subject to severe physical torture to force him to confess.

The Babylon police had published a video of the man 'enacting' the murder in the presence of the provincial police chief, and a large media delegation from the capital, Baghdad. The video stirred up public outrage against the young man at the time.

According to the video, the suspect said he took his wife to visit a religious shrine, and while returning, he stopped near the river, strangled her, burned her body, and then returned his home.

According to the media director of the governorate police command, Brigadier General Adul Al Husseini, an investigation is underway to find out whether the man was subject to torture to make him confess.

He said that after the crime was widely shared on social media, several Iraqi citizens contacted police and informed them about the whereabouts of the woman, which prompted the security forces to go to the place and arrest her.

It turned out there were disputes between the couple, which pushed the wife to run away and disappear.

Many Iraqi social media users asked authorities to explain how they obtained the man’s confessions, demanding the minister of interior step down.
