Paedophile jailed for 10 years after inciting children

to engage in online sexual activity

By Jamie Bowman
Bury Times

A PAEDOPHILE who persuaded two underage brothers to have sex while he filmed them over the internet has been jailed for 10 years.

Thomas Morton, of Percy Street, Bury, targeted young boys across the UK and America, often posing online as an attractive teenage girl before encouraging them to send him images or perform sexual acts which he filmed.

Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard how Morton, 34, was part of a group of fellow paedophiles who would share the images and videos between them and offer advice to each other on how not to get caught.

It would appear they weren't very bright.

Ben Lawrence, prosecuting, said Morton had appeared at Bolton Crown Court in 2013 after downloading more than 4,000 pornographic images of children but was handed a suspended sentence after probation services said he "did not provide a direct risk to children under 18".

It appears 'probation services' aren't very bright either.

He was found to have broken the terms of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order in 2016 when police officers seized his laptop containing over 1,000 indecent images of children.

And, what were the consequences of that?

Four years later, a total of 6,032 images - including 623 in the most severe category A - were found on Morton's devices after officers from GMP's Sexual Crime Unit executed a search warrant at his address on Tuesday, March 3 2020 following information that indecent images had been distributed at an address linked to Morton.

These images consisted of victims who Morton had been in direct contact with via his social media alias, and of other widely-shared images of children which he had received from other like-minded individuals.

One of the devices was a Samsung Galaxy phone which appeared as though there had been an attempt to snap the device in half prior to the police gaining entry.

The sheer extent of Morton's offending quickly became clear to investigators as substantial amounts of evidence repeatedly showed him befriending boys online with a view to grooming them for sexual gratification.

Morton also had multiple social media accounts a number of which were under the name of a 13-year-old girl and used a profile picture of a teenage girl taken from her Facebook profile.

Mr Lawrence described how Morton would use this persona to contact teenage boys and "encourage them to perform sexual acts".

"He made them believe they were communicating with an attractive teenage girl who was interested in them sexually and with whom they were exchanging sexual images on a private basis," said Mr Lawrence.

Morton had installed software enabling him to record the children performing sexual acts and would distribute these images to like-minded paedophiles.

"Evidence showed the group discussed targets and the sort of images they would like to obtain or the sort of sexual behaviour they would like victims to participate in," said Mr Lawrence.

Police identified 14 of the victims - aged between eight and 15 at the time of the offences - from across the UK and USA.

Between November 2019 and February 2020, Morton began communicating with two teenage brothers in the USA and encouraged them to have sex with each other which he recorded.

Another boy who was targeted was just eight-years-old with Morton persuading him to send ten images of himself which were distributed around the group.

Morton was later charged with 21 child sex offences and admitted each count at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday, February 4 2021, as well as three separate counts of making indecent images and breaching his sexual harm prevention order.

Stuart Neale, defending, said Morton had been "cast adrift" after he had first come to the attention of the authorities almost a decade previously.

"No treatment was undertaken and although it doesn't excuse what happens afterwards one has to ask why the defendant has fallen through the stools," said Mr Neale. "Having been arrested in 2016 there seems to have been little involvement in terms of supervising his activities.

"To an extent he has been cast loose when those who are subject to these types of feelings need supervision, need controlling and need reminding what is going on."

Passing sentence, Recorder Geoffrey Payne described Morton as a "prolific and predatory sexual offender."

"You are undoubtedly dangerous and have a record of offending that shows you seek your own gratification at the expense of young, vulnerable people," he said.

"Your activities were calculated and devious and systematically targeted young people which you have done in the teeth of court orders."

Morton was sentenced to 16 years - 10 of which will be spent behind bars and six on licence - and ordered to sign the sex offender's register.

Calderdale, UK child sex offender jailed for 18 years

John Davies, 58, from Sowerby Bridge was branded as a danger to children by Kirklees safeguarding detectives following his sentencing
at Leeds Crown Court yesterday (Friday).

Davies was found guilty of three sexual assaults and two sexual touching offences following his trial in June.

The offending took place in Calderdale and Huddersfield areas against four girls between 2014 and 2020.

He will be placed on the sex offenders register and be subject to a sexual harm prevention order.

The 58-year-old’s abuse first came to police attention in 2020 after one of his victims disclosed what had happened to her.

An immediate investigation was launched which resulted in Davies’ arrest shortly afterwards, with further enquiries made by both Calderdale and Kirklees specialist detectives.

At his sentencing, Davies was described by the judge as a dangerous offender who posed a high risk of serious harm to very young children.

Detective Constable Yvonne Brear, of the Kirklees Child Safeguarding Unit, who led the enquiry, with assistance from Detective Constable Ameira Blight, said: “John Davies abused the trust of others and took advantage of young victims in a truly dreadful way.

“It is no exaggeration to say he poses a real danger to children and we welcome the substantial sentence handed down to him today.

“He chose to compound the suffering of his victims and their families by taking the case to trial, and that has been reflected in the sentence imposed.

“West Yorkshire Police is committed to investigating all reports of child sexual offending with the needs of victims at the heart of every investigation.”

TDSB elementary teacher charged with sex abuse had been reinstated

after previous 2016 allegation

By Alyshah Hasham, The Star
Fri., Sept. 17, 2021

A Toronto District School Board elementary school teacher charged last month with the repeated sexual assault of a seven-year-old boy previously faced an allegation of child sexual assault at a daycare in 2016.

The 2016 charges against Gianni Jarman, 41, known previously as Gianni Pate, were dismissed by a judge after a preliminary inquiry in March 2018 — which means that a judge found there was not enough evidence against him to proceed to trial.

None of his former or current charges are linked to his work as a teacher.

Pate had been accused of sexually assaulting a boy between the age of five and six at a daycare on Livingston Road in Scarborough. Since 2010, he had worked as an early childhood educator and, after 2015, as an occasional teacher at a number of schools, Toronto District School Board spokesperson Ryan Bird said at the time.

None of the listed schools include Secord Elementary, where Jarman was most recently teaching after being reinstated as a teacher in 2018.

Jarman is now accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a seven-year-old boy between 2014 and 2016 while working in a Toronto home as a babysitter and caregiver, according to a police news release issued Thursday.

Again, I beg you parents, do not put your children into daycares
where men are likely to be present.

The offences occurred in residences in the O’Connor Drive and St. Clair Avenue East area and the Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue area, according to police.

He faces two counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference and two counts of invitation to sexual touching.

“If charges are dropped or a staff member charged with serious offences is acquitted, the TDSB would conduct its own investigation to consider discipline or an employee’s suitability for continued employment,” said TDSB spokesperson Shari Schwartz-Maltz. Jarman “was acquitted in court and reinstated in 2018,” she said.

TDSB has been notified of Jarman’s recent arrest, but Schwartz-Maltz noted the school was not part of the investigation.

“The Toronto Police Service has stated that the most recent charges are unrelated to his duties as a teacher, do not involve any students at the school and date back to 2015. Nonetheless, the school’s administrative team did follow the necessary requirements as well as TDSB procedures,” she said.

According to the Ontario College of Teachers registry, as of Sept. 16, 2021, a court has ordered Jarman not be in a park or swimming pool area where children might be present. He is also banned from schools, daycares and playgrounds unless with an adult who is aware of the charges.

The registry does not list the current criminal charges he faces. It also does not note any previous criminal charge or outcome. A spokesperson for the college said only disciplinary matters would be noted on the file.

While Jarman’s profile on the registry notes his previous name, a search for his former name in the registry yields no results. A spokesperson for the Ontario College of Teachers said is a technical issue that is being worked on.

According to the registry, Jarman became a licensed teacher in 2015, qualified to teach at the primary level. He stopped attaining additional qualifications in 2016, the year he was charged. He resumed obtaining additional qualifications, including for teaching kindergarten and students with special needs, in 2019.

Lincolnshire pensioner jailed for historic child sex abuse

It happened more than four decades ago

St Albans Crown Court.

A former Lincolnshire lorry driver has been jailed for 12 months for sexual offences against children in the 1970s.

Lawrence Burman, 75, of Beck Side, Hibaldstow, pleaded guilty to four counts of gross indecency against a child and two counts of indecent assault against a child, St Albans Crown Court heard.

The offences relate to three children, aged between eight and 13 at the time they were abused by Burman.

The court heard how Burman used to work as a lorry driver for a firm in Hemel Hempstead. In 1970, he carried out a sexual act in the presence of one victim while they both sat inside his cab.

Burman then went on to commit several offences near Berkhamsted between 1972 and 1978. One offence was also committed in Lincolnshire.

Detective Constable Laura Chillingworth, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s historic child abuse investigation team, said: “Burman arrogantly believed he would get away with his actions, thinking his victims would never reveal what happened to them. However, their courage in coming forward meant he did have to face the consequences of what he did all those years ago.

“On arrest, he denied the allegations and claimed his victims were lying, but later pleaded guilty to all charges.

“Child victims of sexual abuse never forget what happened to them. They have to learn to live with it, but understandably it often has a hugely negative impact on their self-esteem and their mental health.

“I hope the conclusion of this investigation and its outcome finally gives all three of them a sense of closure on the past.”

Burman will be on licence on his release from prison.
