IJM - International Justice Mission is a global NGO that assists in rescuing people from slavery and sexual slavery. Last weekend, they had a good day.
One hundred and five families were trapped in a brick factory and forced to work seven days a week—without rest on weekends or holidays. Seventy-five of those trapped were children, with no real access to education or the simple joys of a regular childhood.
This massive operation is a huge milestone for another reason: It started thanks to a state government official. He investigated the brick factory on his own and called the IJM team in Chennai for help.
This kind of proactive leadership was unimaginable ten years ago, but today it’s a sign that things are changing on the journey to end slavery.
