A former Catholic brother wanted in Australia on 252 charges of child sexual abuse is appealing against his extradition from New Zealand.
A justice ministry spokesman has confirmed that Bernard Kevin McGrath, 66, has lodged an appeal in Christchurch where he is living on bail.
A Christchurch district court judge ruled two weeks ago that McGrath could be extradited to Australia to face charges relating to the alleged sexual abuse of 35 boys in New South Wales during the mid-1970s and '80s.
The judge suppressed publication of McGrath's image and some details surrounding his alleged crimes.
McGrath had until today to either voluntarily return to Australia or lodge an appeal. He's obviously dragging this out as long as possible.
