The victim had been charged with possessing child pornography
Sotogrande, Costa del Sol |
A British man has been arrested in Spain for allegedly killing a German man, whom he caught filming his young daughter on his iPad.
Police detained the man, 40, on Saturday night, after he attacked another man, 43, in a restaurant in the exclusive southern Spanish resort of Sotogrande, on the Costa del Sol.
A source told PA that the man’s daughter is under the age of eight.
Days before the attack, the victim had been charged with possessing child pornography and was awaiting trial, but it is unknown whether the British man, who lives in Sotogrande, was aware of this fact.
A spokeswoman for the Civil Guard said the pair began discussing alleged recordings that the victim was making of the aggressor’s daughter using his tablet.
“When he (the aggressor) saw what was happening he took the tablet off him, saw the recordings, threw the device to the ground and attacked him,” she said.
The victim was found by police on the scene alive but “very serious” wounds. It is understood no weapons were used during the attack, police said.
The man was then rushed to a hospital in nearby La Linea de la Concepcion, where he later died. The authorities are now awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
The suspect fled the restaurant after the assault, but was later identified by witnesses, police said.
This will be an interesting case to follow. My instinct says, 'it could happen to any dad'. But there are things we don't know yet, like whether or not the Brit was a trained fighter and knew he could kill the pervert. Basically, I hope he is not prosecuted or found innocent by temporary insanity.
In January, the victim was arrested in Spain over child pornography claims.
Sotogrande is one of Spain's most upmarket resorts and is known for its golf courses and large houses overlooking the Mediterranean.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are urgently investigating reports of the arrest of a British national in the Cadiz area in southern Spain.
"We stand ready to provide consular assistance if requested."
Police said that the arrested man has been remanded in prison after appearing before a magistrate.
