A child sex offender who fled to Cyprus after committing "the most shocking and appalling crimes imaginable" has been jailed for 11 years and six months.
Graham Richard Wilson, 70, from Rotherham, UK, admitted raping and sexually assaulting a girl under 16.
Wilson pleaded guilty in 2012 to 24 offences against two young girls. He fled the UK while on bail and had to be extradited from northern Cyprus before sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court. South Yorkshire Police said they were determined "to bring him to justice".
At court he was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life and is subject to a Sex Offenders Prevention Order, which means he will be monitored on his release from prison.
On 25 October 2012 Wilson pleaded guilty to 23 charges relating to the first victim, who was under 16 when the abuse started in 1978.
They included four counts of rape, 11 of indecent assault, six of serious sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child.
He also admitted indecently assaulting a 15-year-old girl in 1994.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "Wilson committed the most shocking and appalling crimes imaginable and attempted to evade justice by fleeing the country.
"However, his freedom did not last long and we were determined to find him and bring him to justice."
Rotherham is a town of about a quarter million souls just northeast of Sheffield, England.
