Roman Polanski to be Questioned by Polish Authorities About Possible Extradition to US

Roman Polanski
Roman Polanski has promised to cooperate with Polish authorities while they deal with his US extradition request.

The director, who lives in France and is currently working on a film in Krakow, Poland pleaded guilty in 1977 for unlawful sex with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer in Los Angeles, after giving her drink and drugs.

Polanski served 42 days in jail, and fled the US the next year as he was worried he could be given a longer sentence.

In an interview on Monday, the 81-year-old director told Polish network TVN24: "I know that an extradition request has come and of course I will undergo the procedure and we will see. I trust the Polish judiciary system. I hope everything will be all right."

Polish authorities intend to question Roman Polanski, after California prosecutors requested the film-maker be extradited to the US over his 1977 conviction.

The director, who has lived in France ever since fleeing the US, has been staying in the Polish city of Krakow, where he is shooting his next film, An Officer and A Spy, about the Dreyfus affair.

In October, the US attempted to extradite Mr Polanski when he visited Warsaw. The film-maker was questioned at the time but not arrested, and prosecutors in the Polish capital rejected the US request. Mr Polanski’s Polish lawyer Jerzy Stachowicz told Reuters: “In our view no new circumstances have arisen which could lead to a change in the decision by the prosecutor’s office in October.”

Mr Polanski was born in Paris to Jewish parents but raised in Poland, where he survived the Holocaust in part by posing as a Roman Catholic. After becoming a film-maker he moved to France and the US, but is still seen by many Poles as one of the country’s leading cultural figures. The director holds French and Polish passports, and its extradition treaty with the US does not oblige Poland to extradite its own citizens.

In 2009, Polanski was arrested in Switzerland while attending a film festival, but escaped extradition.

Last month he requested his original conviction be thrown out, but a California judge ruled the case could not be dismissed while Mr Polanski remained a fugitive. The film-maker originally served 42 days in a California jail as part of a plea bargain that meant more serious charges, including rape, would be dropped. He absconded because he feared the judge hearing his case planned to renege on the deal.

“It was such a shock to learn that it’s not finished, after they let you out of prison,” Mr Polanski recently told Vanity Fair. “In your mind it’s all over, it’s finished. And then the judge changed his mind. And I have to go back to prison, and nobody knows how long. I just could not go through that.”

So, he thought 45 days in jail was sufficient punishment for drugging and raping a 13 year old girl?
