Ryan International School murder: Boys are more vulnerable to sexual abuse than girls, say mental health experts

Parents should be careful of strangers who are overtly friendly and helpful to their children, warned psychologists after the murder of an eight-year-old at Ryan International School, Bhondsi on Friday.
GURGAON, India

Gurgaon Police arrested a 42-year-old bus conductor, identified as Ashok Kumar, for the murder of the eight-year-old inside the toilet of Ryan International School.(Sanjeev Verma/H)

Parents should be careful of strangers who are overtly friendly and helpful to their children, warned psychologists after the murder of an eight-year-old at Ryan International School, Bhondsi on Friday.

The boy was found outside a school toilet on the ground floor, crawling and bleeding profusely before he died. Gurgaon Police later arrested a 42-year-old bus conductor, identified as Ashok Kumar, for the crime.

Police later said that the accused after being interrogated confessed that he attempted to sexual assault the child inside the toilet before killing him.

Experts warned that people who appear to be overtly friendly to children often turn out to be psychopaths.

Doctors also said that out of every four cases of children being sexually abused, three of the victims were boys.

“Boys are more vulnerable to sexual abuse than girls as parents do not make boys aware regarding different types of touches,” said Jyoti Madan, senior consultant, psychiatry & psychotherapy, Paras hospitals.

Psychologists were also of the opinion that the accused in the Ryan International case clearly had a pathological mind and such people were difficult to identify unless they are caught in the act.

Such people, experts said, suffered from Paedophilia disorder, a condition where a person is attracted sexually to prepubescent children.

Samir Parikh, director, department of Mental Health & Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Healthcare, said, “People who abuse children sexually lack remorse and are difficult to identify as they do not show any physical and behavioural issues.”

Doctors also maintained that in most child abuse cases, usually the accused is known to the victim. Experts said that these cases can be reduced by making the children aware about good touch and bad touch.

Brahmdeep Sindhu, senior psychiatrist, Civil Hospital, Gurgaon said, “These cases are increasing because our society is losing attachment and trust.”

The psychologists also said that people suffering from Paedophilia disorder though aware of their condition, however, do not opt for treatment because of social stigmas associated with mental diseases.

Jailed in August: Cambridge sex predator headteacher, rapist, pervert
BY RAYMOND BROWN

A sex predator Cambridge headteacher, a rapist, a man who planned to rape and film children and two violent thugs are among criminals in the Cambridge area banged up in jail in August.

Glyn Knowles

This was the shocking story broken by the News that a Cambridge headteacher sent sexual messages to a private investigator posing as a teenage boy on Grindr and then tried to meet him.

Knowles was acting head of Cambridge International School when he was arrested on July 14 in Bishop’s Stortford.

St Albans Crown Court heard on August 18 the 50-year-old thought he was meeting a 15-year-old boy he had engaged in a conversation about oral sex and asked to see his penis.

But after police were tipped off about the sting operation he was arrested and pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a boy under 16 following grooming.

Judge Andrew Bright QC sentenced Knowles, of High Street, Puckeridge, to one year imprisonment.

One year!!! Wahoo! That ought keep the streets safe for a couple weeks.

Anyone worried about a child can contact the NSPCC’s helpline on 0808 500 1111. Children can contact Childline on 0800 1111.

Lee Matthews

Lee Matthews has been jailed for planning to rape and film the abuse of two young children.

Branded a “dangerous” man, Matthews planned to rape children aged eight and two and film the abuse.

Lee Matthews, 47, of Holme Way, Sawston used websites to discuss sexual abuse of children and arranged to meet a man and his two children in a hotel room to rape the girl and boy and film the abuse.

Matthews was arrested on his way to a hotel room to meet the children, an eight-year-old girl and two-year-old boy.

He had booked a family room at the hotel in his name and was carrying toys for the children when he was arrested on February 11, 2017.

He was also charged with attempting to arrange or facilitate the commission of a child sex offence, which he later pleaded guilty to.

Appearing at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, August 11, Matthews was jailed for six years and four months and will be on licence for a further three years and four months.

He has also been placed on the sex offenders register for life, and made subject of a life-long Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

Matthews was arrested following a policing operation targeting online paedophiles.

Alistair Gemmell

This monster raped a woman at a gathering following the Cambridge Beer Festival.

Gemmell has been jailed for more than six years.

The 31-year-old attended the festival on May 23 last year (2016) before joining three other people at a house in Victoria Road, Cambridge later that day.

It was there that Gemmell, of Churchill Avenue, Wyton on the Hill, raped a woman in her 30s when the other two people had gone to bed.

One of the occupants entered the room whilst the rape was taking place after concerns for her safety.

Gemmell denied a charge of rape, but was found guilty following a four day trial at Peterborough Crown Court.

On Friday, August 25 he was sentenced to six years and six months in prison.

Police commend the victim for her bravery throughout the investigation and court proceedings, as well as thanking the witnesses for intervening in the incident and assisting with the investigation.

Four former Trinity teachers accused of abuse
Tammy Mills and Nino Bucci

Allegations of historical sexual abuse have emerged against a fourth teacher at Trinity Grammar, raising concerns there was a cluster of predatory employees at the Melbourne private school in the 1970s.

Four former employees - a senior teacher, an assistant chaplain, a boarding tutor and now, a science teacher - were all at the Anglican school at the same time.

The school is yet to acknowledge the extent of the abuse, but current headmaster Michael Davies urged survivors to come forward.

There is no evidence of a paedophile ring, but there are worrying links to two of the claims.

The most recent claim alleges that shortly after an incident - which cannot be detailed for legal reasons - with the school's science teacher when he was 15, the former student was abused by Christopher Howell, the senior teacher.

Now in his 50s, the former student says the incident and subsequent abuse sent him on a downward spiral, and left him feeling like "the teachers were all in it together".

He raised the allegations with the school in 2015 before going to police. Investigators were unable to pursue the claim because the science teacher had died. Instead they took a statement about Howell, who was alive at the time.

Howell, who taught at the school for 40 years, took his own life days before he was due to face court last year on an indecent assault charge. Five former students have come forward to say they were molested by him.

The science teacher ran outdoor education camps and was known by some students to watch boys in the shower. One former student remembers his classmates being ordered to get into the sleeping bag with the teacher to stay warm.

In the second claim, another survivor says when he was 15, he and his parents tried to report Howell's abuse to his boarding master Leslie Wiggins. He said Wiggins told them the allegation was "nonsense" so they reported it to then headmaster John Leppitt. Mr Leppitt, the survivor said, told his parents their child needed to be disciplined.

It can now be revealed a former teacher has provided a statement claiming Wiggins, the school's assistant chaplain, was moved in 1975 because of an abuse allegation.

Known by students at the time as a "fiddler", Wiggins was convicted in 1991 of indecently assaulting three boys on the Mornington Peninsula. He died several years ago.

Rightside Legal lawyer Michael Magazanik, who is preparing legal action against Trinity, says the allegations show there was a culture of cover-up.

"Trinity, like Geelong Grammar, was a haven for abusers," Mr Magazanik said.

"Many lives have been damaged as a result. We know of at least two suicides thought to be linked to abuse at the school. It's time the school faced up to just how bad things were."

The fourth alleged child abuser, who was a boarding house tutor, is facing a criminal trial accused of sexually assaulting five boys, two who were from Trinity, in 1975 and 1978.

A fifth teacher, John Hamilton Buckley, was jailed in 2015 for abusing boys in the 1980s at Geelong Grammar's junior school Glenmorgan in Toorak. He taught at Trinity for one term in 1986 as a replacement for a teacher on long service leave.

Trinity's current headmaster, Dr Michael Davies, said any allegations of abuse at the school were deeply concerning and very upsetting.

"I would like to reassure the Trinity community that we treat these matters with the utmost seriousness and have strict and clearly communicated policies around reports of abuse," Dr Davies said.

"If abuse was reported in prior years and not acted upon or appropriately documented then that is in total contravention of policies and procedures which are now rigorously adhered to in the school."

Legal action focuses on Howell and the former science teacher. Another firm, Maurice Blackburn, is representing two other complainants who say they were abused by Howell and the former boarding tutor.

The allegations against Howell, who rose to the position of assistant headmaster, caused deep divides. Many simply refused to believe the claims. "It has torn apart the community," a friend of Howell's said. "So many have great memories of Chris, but clearly there are some who don't ...Tragically, there is a stain on his career."

The ruptures were exposed when Dr Davies and his deputy Rohan Brown paid tribute to Howell's "extraordinary legacy" after his death, despite knowing he'd been charged. "To many, including those penning this letter, Chris Howell was, is and always will be the best educator we have known."

The letter led to the president and treasurer of the Old Boys board to resign in disgust. One of the survivors said he had never been more revolted with something than that letter. "The vision of Howell was enough to make me sick, but what the school was saying about him; it was a lie and the school knew it was a lie and it protected him. The school has broken faith with every parent, every child."

The school apologised more than 18 months later in an email sent out late last month that referenced Howell and the boarding tutor without naming them.

"We continue to encourage anyone who is upset or who has grievances or concerns to contact me personally at the school or, if appropriate, the relevant authorities," Dr Davies wrote.

"We will offer counselling and support to any Old Boys who have been impacted and will continue to fully and openly cooperate with the relevant authorities. As a school we are sincerely sorry for any abuse that has taken place in our community."

N.B. man convicted of sexually assaulting girl sues her family for brutal beating
By Staff The Canadian Press

The man is seeking compensation for numerous injuries including a broken nose, concussion, two black eyes and cuts to his ear and finger in a September 2015 attack.

A New Brunswick man who sexually assaulted an underage girl is now suing her family and friends for brutally beating him.

The man’s lawyer, David Lutz, says it was not up to the girl’s family or other vigilantes to punish the man – that’s the job of the courts.

“He ran afoul of the law by being involved sexually with this young woman, and the court punished him. And it was not for other people, be it her family or unknown vigilantes,” Lutz said.

In a statement of claim filed with the Court of Queen’s Bench, the man is seeking compensation for numerous injuries including a broken nose, concussion, two black eyes and cuts to his ear and finger in a September 2015 attack.

The lawsuit doesn’t give details of the criminal case, but a New Brunswick newspaper reported that the man pleaded guilty to summary sexual assault and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, which he could serve on weekends.

90 days in jail to be served on week-ends! In Canada, you report to jail on Friday night and if they are full, which they usually are, the guards send you home. Essentially, he will have probably served only a few days in jail while the child will suffer for years if not the rest of her life.

If the courts are unwilling to mete out sufficient punishment, then there is no incentive for perverts to leave children alone. The girl's family provided that incentive, and while I don't condone vigilante justice, until judges get the extraordinary consequences to a child and then an adult survivor and issue appropriate punishments, then vigilante justice is the only real justice.

The Telegraph-Journal says the girl’s mother and three men were all sentenced for their roles in the attack on the man.

There is a publication ban on the names of all of the individuals involved in the case.

The statement of claim says the man was lured to a home where he was greeted with a punch to the face with a closed fist.

It says when he tried to retreat, two more men joined in the attack and a knife was held to his throat and he was told that his jugular would be cut if he tried to move.

The document says he did try to escape and was cut on the index finger before the three men “caught him and dragged him into a detached garage, wherein they confined and attacked (the man) for 30 to 45 minutes.”

The statement of claim says one man brandished a propane torch and threatened to burn off one of the victim’s body parts, and later repeatedly struck the victim in the head with the propane tank.

It says a car the man had borrowed from his mother was repeatedly struck with an axe and a sledgehammer, causing significant damage.

“When the defendants finished their attacks on (the man) and allowed him to leave, they told (him) that they would kill him if he ever returned,” the statement reads.

They took his wallet, and removed $500 cash, the lawsuit says.

It says the attack left him with “hemorrhaging inside his eyeballs” and severe recurring headaches. He suffers anxiety, memory loss and fear of being in public, it says.

Anxiety, memory loss and fear of being in public - sound like symptoms a child sex survivor would suffer from, for years.

He has lost education and job opportunities, and his mother took two months off from work from her own psychological harm because of the attack, it says.

One attacker pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats, and mischief over $5,000. He was sentenced to one year in jail.

Two other men were found guilty of assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement. They were sentenced to three months in jail and 18 months probation.

The mother was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm and mischief over $5,000. She was sentenced to three months in jail and 18 months supervised probation.

Lutz said people should not take the law into their own hands.

“He is not necessarily suing the family members as family members of the young woman he was involved with. He is suing the people who beat him and confined him. If they happen to be the family members, so be it,” Lutz said.

“He is like any other person who is assaulted in our country. The assault is not between him and the people who assaulted him. What they did to him is a breach of her majesty’s peace.”

The victim of the attack and his mother – the car’s owner – are suing for damages.

The lawyer for the defendants has filed a notice of intent to defend, but had not yet filed a statement of defence.

I think it is time the girl sued the pervert!
