Some Horrid People Among 6 Stories on Today's USA PnP List

Police report says Paterno may have known of complaint against Sandusky before 2001 incident
Samson X Horne

A Penn State assistant coach's 2001 accusation of sexual abuse of a child by longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was the “second complaint of this nature” that head coach Joe Paterno reportedly said he had received, according to a CNN story citing a one-page Pennsylvania State Police report.

Sandusky and Paterno

According to the state police report, assistant coach Mike McQueary told Paterno of an incident he had witnessed in a locker room between Sandusky and a young boy and that Paterno told him it “was the second complaint of this nature he had received, CNN reported .

Sandusky was convicted in June 2012 of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period.

The state police report was written after Sandusky's 2011 arrest, according to CNN.

The Paterno family has maintained that Joe Paterno was not aware of Sandusky's actions or knowledge that he might be sexually abusing boys prior to 2001.

However, other documents unveiled since Paterno's death suggest he aware of claims as early as 1976.

Sandusky is serving a sentence of at least 30 years in prison. He is appealing his sentence.

NEWARK, N.J. — A New Jersey man convicted of coercing a young girl to engage in sexually explicit conduct while he photographed it has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Felix Restitullo will also be put on lifetime supervised release under the sentence imposed Friday.

A federal jury deliberated for less than three hours in May before finding the 42-year-old Jersey City man guilty of producing child pornography and possessing child porn. (2nd story on link)

Investigators had interviewed the victim in March 2014 as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged child sexual abuse. She told them Restitullo had sexually abused her and photographed it.

Investigators say a forensic examination of electronic media devices belonging to Restitullo found more than 3,000 images and more than 350 videos of child sexual abuse.

Judge rules ex-Chicago priest Daniel McCormack
sexually violent
By Sarah Schulte

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Cook County judge ruled Friday that former Chicago priest Daniel McCormack is a sexually violent person and should remain indefinitely in a state facility for sex offenders.

Judge Dennis Porter sided with state prosecutors seeking to prevent the convicted child molester from being released. McCormack's victims also wanted him to remain in custody.

"They know how dangerous he is, they know how cunning he is, how manipulative he is," said Marc Pearlman, a attorney representing several of the victims.

In 2007, McCormack pleaded guilty to sexually abusing five boys while he was a priest at St. Agatha Parish on Chicago's West Side, but court records show dozens of other boys alleged McCormack abused them as well.

To be declared a sexually violent person, prosecutors must prove McCormack has a mental disorder and will reoffend again. The state's only witness, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Angeline Stanislaus, diagnosed the former priest with pedophilia. She testified it is likely McCormack will offend again, especially since he continued to abuse boys after he was arrested and placed under supervision by the archdiocese.

Since the state filed its petition in 2009 to have McCormack declared a sexually violent person, the former priest has been held in a downstate facility for sex offenders. He appeared in court Wednesday, and his attorneys will have their own psychiatric experts as witnesses. All are relying on court records and documents, as McCormack chose not to be interviewed.

Barbara Dorris, managing director of SNAP, released a statement saying, "Today former Catholic priest Daniel McCormack was found by a Cook County judge to be a sexually violent person. That means that, for the present, the former priest will remain at the Illinois Department of Human Services facility for sex offenders where he has been held since he completed his prison sentence. In November the judge will decide whether Mr. McCormack will remain at the facility indefinitely or will be released to the community under strict conditions."

As survivors of child sexual abuse, we are grateful to the court for recognizing the danger that Mr. McCormack could pose were he to be released back into society. While we recognize that the former priest has served his time, we believe that the threat he poses to innocent children warrants this extraordinary safeguard.

Just recently we were extremely saddened to learn that another former priest, previously convicted and required to register as a sex offender, was arrested on new charges of sexually abusing a child.

Although an arrest is not a conviction, we know that false allegations of child sexual abuse are extremely rare.

SNAP is thankful that the judge in this case was far-sighted enough to recognize that the safety of children trumps Mr. McCormack's opportunity for a second chance."

Teacher fired after husband arrested for
child sex abuse
By Arkansas Online

A teacher in Northwest Arkansas accused of failing to report the sexual abuse of a young girl has been fired from her job, according to a district official.

Tamy Pershing, 46, had been placed on leave Tuesday, and the superintendent at Arkansas Arts Academy recommended that she be terminated at the board's next meeting.

On Thursday night, the district's board voted unanimously to fire Pershing from her position as a sixth-grade language arts teacher.

Officials at Arkansas Arts Academy in Rogers learned Sept. 1 that Pershing had been arrested on charges of failure to notify by a mandated reporter and of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Pershing is accused of failing to tell authorities that her husband, 54-year-old science-fiction author Douglas Jay Pershing, had reportedly abused a 4-year-old girl at the couple's home in Bella Vista.

Police said Pershing caught her husband on at least one occasion having inappropriate contact with the child, prompting Pershing to tell her husband to "stop and not do it again."

The girl's 2-year-old sister also was part of the sexual abuse investigation out of Henderson, Nev., police said.

The Pershings are set to be arraigned Oct. 9 in Benton County Circuit Court.

Vermont man sentenced for child sex abuse in Missouri
By Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Vermont man has been sentenced to 30 years and four months in federal prison for sexually abusing a 6-year-old child while he lived on a military base in Missouri.

Federal prosecutors announced Friday that 68-year-old Paul Kickery Sr., of Brattleboro, Vermont, was sentenced for aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

Court documents show the victim reported she was sexually assaulted by Kickery several times between July 2013, and July 2014. At that time, Kickery and the then-6-year-old victim were living on the U.S. Army Military Base at Fort Leonard Wood.

Prosecutors say Kickery admitted to sexually abusing the victim. He also admitted to molesting a 15-year-old child while he lived in Vermont, and to viewing child pornography on the Internet.

Two charged with abuse of 9yo girl trapped in dog cage

A man and a woman have been charged in a child abuse investigation in Wisconsin, where a nine-year-old girl was discovered locked in a dog cage.

Racine County Sheriff’s Office said the incident was one of the most disturbing cases of child abuse it has ever seen.

Investigators were alerted to the suspected abuse by the child’s teacher and visited the girl’s home in the town of Norway, where they found a large dog cage measuring 4ft 10in high, 8ft long, and 4ft wide.

The child was locked in the enclosure at night and occasionally throughout the day, investigators said.

A photo of the kennel shows cardboard on the floor with some blankets strewn in the corner of the cage.

Police charged the girl’s caregiver, 47-year-old Gale Lalonde, and property owner Dale Deavers, 48, from Wind Lake, with causing mental harm to a child, false imprisonment, and several other felony charges.

Lalonde told police she had been locking the child in the cage for approximately two weeks, FOX6 reported.

The victim and another sibling were removed from the residence and placed into protective custody by Racine County Human Services.

“I was sickened at what I witnessed last night. This by far, is one of the most disturbing and heart-wrenching cases of child abuse I’ve seen, it doesn’t get much worse than this,” Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said.

There is no indication, at this point, of sexual abuse having occurred, so, unfortunately, it does get much worse than this for some kids.

Lalonde and Deavers appeared in court Friday, where a cash bond for both defendants was set at $55,000. They are scheduled to appear in court again for preliminary hearings on Wednesday.
